Today TNW spotlights a helpful tip (originally posted on Reddit) that can help you get through to a real person faster when calling the AppleCare helpline: drop the F-word.

Like many of us, the Reddit user grew frustrated navigating through the numeric automated telelphone system menu and (perhaps like many of us) began cursing in frustration into the phone. Then something interesting happened: "[The automated voice] cut itself off in mid-sentence, apologized, and in about 10 more seconds I was talking to an Apple tech."

The ability of an automated telelphone system recognizing the F-word isn't a genius invention by Apple, though. It's software built into the third-party Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system used by AppleCare. As TNW points out, IVRs "are often programmed to listen out for certain keywords that might indicate they are about to lose a customer. By monitoring calls and immediately connecting a frustrated caller, the company may be able to reduce the number of complaints [it] receives and retain the caller's custom."

But for those of you reading this who now think you have a hotline to a real AppleCare representative the second you call, you might want to think again. Despite the ability of the IVR to recognize profanity, shouting "F*CK!!!" every time you call AppleCare may not get you the results you hope to get for a few reasons. First, you look like a jerk with anger issues. Second, another Reddit user suggests that doing so won't always take you to someone who can answer your questions. Instead it just might transfer you to an AppleCare "call director" who will apologize for making you wait and then transfer you back to the queue -- something that might have you screaming "F*CK!" all over again.

The shipping delay for Apple iPhone 5 has been steadily dropping over the past few weeks, and today it reached an all-time low of just one week. At least, that’s the case if you live in Australia. Estimates for other regions — including the United States — are still at two weeks, but we’re expecting those to drop soon, too.
The new one-week delay means you can order an iPhone 5 today and it’ll be shipped out by next Monday. That’s still a pretty lengthy wait, of course, but it’s a big improvement. Just a few weeks ago, customers ordering the handset through Apple’s online store were facing shipping delays of up to a month.
It’s still quicker to pick up a device from an Apple retail store, or from your carrier — which continue to receive regular deliveries of the handset. But if for any reason you can only buy online, this is great news.
Again, these estimates have only improved in Apple’s Australian online store at the time of writing this piece. But we’re expecting them to rollout to other countries shortly.

Here’s a video that compares the amount of people visiting the Microsoft Store and the Apple Store. Surprise, Apple won on Black Friday.

When you just look at the money Apple made in 2012 it’s pretty incredible. But when you provide some context to those earnings and put Apple’s profits next to the competition’s profits, Apple’s performance is absolutely mindboggling.
From October 2011 to September 2012 Apple made more money than Microsoft, Ebay, Google, Yahoo! Facebook and Amazon combined. In that same period, Dell, Asus, Intel, Acer, IBM, Lenovo, and HP (basically the entire PC industry) only made $19.3 billion in profit, which is less than half of Apple’s profit.

The current Apple TV set-top box just doesn’t cut it. We all want more from Apple, and hopefully we’ll get the perfect TV experience one day. Until then, there’s only the imagination.
Content distribution and management is a convoluted mess right now, especially in the living room. That’s why I’m floored by the beautiful simplicity of this Apple TV concept:

A forum member at The Verge (who goes by the name “Knowledge”) created the above mockups, and he’s posted a Dropbox link to all of the images in one hi-res collage. (Beware of opening that link on a mobile device; the file size is large.)
Knowledge explains the reasoning behind his mockups:
I would just like to first say I’m not a writer, designer, programmer, engineer, etc etc, just a guy with a vision, a man with the dream of paying only for content I want to watch — content that actually matters to me. When I set out to compile these ideas I thought it would be impossible for anyone to ever launch such a product because of the current monopolization by the cable companies, but rather than figure out a way around that I decided to come up with a product that would be my ideal product, the product of my dreams and probably many others regardless how impractical the politics and economics of the whole thing might be.
For not being a designer, the mockups look pretty slick. I like the attention to detail with the linen backgrounds and iOS-like folders for subscription icons. Interestingly, a FaceTime camera is also included in the concept. Awhile back we reported on an Apple HDTV prototype that had FaceTime.
I wish that something this wonderfully integrated could exist, but it would be a licensing nightmare. Apple has been trying to negotiate deals to get a live TV/internet-based product off the ground, but it looks like there’s still plenty of red tape to navigate through.

How come reviewers don't use sand/dust/soil?
I mean it's in all of our pockets and everywhere. That is what causes scratches.

Duane the steinheil is matte right? Does it interfere with the retina display quality?

the EX Ultra Crystal is clear. Very clear. Once it's on its very difficult to tell that you have on a screen protector.

Ohhhooo was looking for one that is a bit anti-glare but doesnt affect the quality of the screen.

Guys, how good is the oleo-phobic quality? similar to the stock glass? where a water droplet would just run off?

^ oleophobic is oil resistant. Hyrdophobic is water resistant.

Any anti-glare film will reduce the image quality of the screen. The best option is to stand in the shade!

@ M_2NR

I still got a lot of finger prints/smudges on the 4S ... my hands were clean for the majority of the time, so this is the only thing I found to be a little issue.

@ pioneer

Can't say because I was/am very careful with these devices. But once it doesn't fall on its edge, then it should be good to go.

pios, the Extreme Zagg supposed to have shock resistance ;) if it's like the old zaggs, it should have a rubbery feel so it may scratch after time but if you use your nail for instance against it, it blemishes but "heals"
Check out the videos on their site.

Thanks Parvin!

haha boy, i get tons of reflection in my room but i bear with it. Thanks for clearing the terms up.
Reason why i ask also was that i saw this Steinheiland so far 5 5 star ratings and it's "anti-glare".

I've been using SGP screen protectors since the iPhone 4 & iPad first came out, IMO, best on the market.

Don't forget to tell us how the install went and how it looks etc. Especially if there is the orange peel effect etc.

___

I did an el cheapo xtremeguards install yesterday. Honestly, for the cost, it isn't so bad. At the end of the day though, all of these shields are prone to dyes and oils which end up discoloring them. Those SGP and Extreme shields are attractive for the shock protection though!
