Art of Shaving

Postby DionYorker » September 17th, 2013, 7:36 am

At New York City's Art of Shaving, the best shave of your life will cost you $55 – and no small amount of courage. In this era of ultralite pivoting four-blade razors so safe you can practically swallow them, it's unnerving, and a bit thrilling, to have an imposing Russian man named Boris come at you with six inches of gleaming diamond-sharpened steel.
MORE FROM men's journal:

» How to Shave with Gin
» A Smoother Electric Shaver for You
» How to Groom Your Beard Better

At the risk of spoiling the show, though, Art of Shaving cofounder Eric Malka has a secret for you: It's just a clever parlor trick. "Men don't realize the key to a great shave is prepping," Malka says. In other words, that neoprene-smooth feeling you get afterward has less to do with the blade than with the other things being done to your face while you're focused on the steadiness of Boris's hand.

Things like opening your pores with steam and hot water, massaging essential oils into your beard, and lathering you up with an impossibly thick shave cream. Here's something else Malka probably shouldn't tell you: You can get pretty much the same effect right in your own WC. Just follow these four steps.

Step One
Make sure you've prepped your beard with warm water. Ideally, you'll shave in the shower, but after-shower shaving works nearly as well.

Step Two
Once the moisture has softened your whiskers, massage some lubricant into your beard. Purists insist on a thick-lather cream, but gel provides a more than adequate alternative, and lets you see what you're doing as you shave your sideburns.

Step Three
Now you're ready to shave. Apply light pressure, and shave with the direction of your whiskers to minimize irritation. When you're done, splash cold water on your newly shorn cheeks to close up the pores.

Step Four
After you've patted your face dry, moisturize with an aftershave balm. The moisture soothes your skin and prepares it for the next time you – or Boris – drag a sharp blade across your neck.

Dear noobs, this is how it's done.

This is the real art of shaving. And it has been all but lost. Honing and stropping these soft steel razors took some real skill.

I read a lot of literature before I took to my grandfather's old straight razor many years ago. Made in Pakistan. It worked beautifully, smoothest, closest shave after the warm, wet towel and shaving soap/badger-hair brush.

But I didn't have the proper tools or skills to sharpen it again when it got dull. I tried several times to get the original edge, even carried it by a few youngish barbers but they had no idea how to handle the instrument. They would use the new hollow ones with the half double-razor (Minora type). Only those old guys would know how to strop those razors properly, understanding every detail of their instrument. Real quality straight razors like Dovo cost a pretty penny now.

Gave it up and went to Wilkinson Sword double edge razors. Very close and delicately smooth. Tried the Gillette 5 blades and they did provide the same satisfaction as the straight razor. Too expensive though, despite the long life of a cartridge. Gone back to Wilkinson Sword.

You do know that its actually alot cheaper to but a new set that comes with 3 cartridges, than to go buy a pack of three or 5 cartridges right?

Yeah but that is just wasting resources, like buying a new printer instead of new ink in Walmart for $30. After a while you just get fed up of wasting your money and get something more economical and practical.

hey guys who have electric shavers, any of you have a cleaning solution you put together for yourself at home..as opposed to buying the recommended cleaning solution?

Have a Norelco 3d sensotouch electric shaver and looking to concoct my own cleaning solution as opposed to buying online all the time.

Electron micrograph of how they work on beard hair: razor on the left, electric shaver on the right. An electric shaver rips out your hair. Don't use this on your face men. The rotating head ones cause a lot of ingrown hairs for this reason.

I use a cheapo conair all in one with the different heads to keep a constant 5 o clock shadow.
It surprised me and worked great for about 8 months and counting.
I hate being clean shaven. Feels naked and unnatural.
But if shaving clean, Fusion blades over that rotating sheit.

The best I've used and loved was the common "Gillette Good News" - the one with the blue rubber grip!
It's the sharpest disposable shaver - hence always hard to find (all of a sudden).

It's not as expensive as those "Mach3" blades, and does the job just as well.
