We've got good news for anyone intrigued by the new (largely incremental) features of Apple's latest mobile OS update. MuscleNerd, famed iOS meddler, has confirmed that iOS 5.1 can be jailbroken to the original iPad, iPhone 4 and 3rd and 4th generation iPod Touch devices. Unfortunately, it's still a tethered jailbreak which means you'll need to "just boot" the device using redsn0w whenever it powers down. However, we're sure those iOS hackers are already working on that minor niggle.

------

Thousands of Apple fans let their jaws hit the floor earlier today when Apple announced “the new iPad.” There was no “iPad 3,” no “iPad HD,” no “iPad Epic Pro Super X 4G LTE Touch.” Just iPad. Apple broke the numbering scheme and went back to the basics.

Why? Apple VP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller revealed the answer after today’s keynote.

When asked by The Wall Street Journal, Schiller said Apple called it “iPad” because “we don’t want to be predictable.” That’s it. No other explanation. No long-winded rant about how the iPad is leading a revolution that’s changing the world and ushering in a new age of incredibleness. No marketing strategy about how Apple wants to consolidate its product line in the mind of the consumer. Just predictability.

That answer shouldn’t really come as a surprise to any tech enthusiast that’s been following Apple for a decent amount of time. Apple has been shattering the status quo and throwing curveballs at the press for years. Despite the constant churning of the rumor mill, the company somehow manages to keep surprising the industry in one way or another with every announcement.

For the most part, there were two camps before today’s keynote: the people that thought we’d see the iPad 3 and those that thought it would be called iPad HD (myself included). There were plausible arguments for both sides, and several big publications even weighed in at the last minute saying Apple would definitely call it iPad HD. Leave it to Apple to screw with both camps and just call it iPad.

Good job, Apple. You won again. Now I’ll take a new iPad please.

I've been trying to download the ipsw since last night. Even iTunes can't connect to the server. Apple pulled the "appldnld.apple.com" site or something?

updated to 5.1 on the 4S this morning. Battery down by 40% since 9 am with moderate use. Can't say I've seen any incredible improvement in battery life yet.

My battery life seems to be slightly better on my 4S, I'm really liking the quick launch of the camera. 5.1 feels a little snappier on my iPad 1st gen than 5.0.1

& bought the new apple tv today, was waiting on 1080p, shipping says estimated between march 21st-28th tho : /

Here is one for the experts:

I have updated my new bootrom 3GS to iOS 5.1, preserving my 05.13.04 baseband. I have also installed the latest version of iTunes (10.6). However, when I run Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 in Administrator mode in Windows 7 I get a popup saying:

Incomplete iTunes libraries

Certain operations (like the A5 jailbreak) are disabled
due to incomplete iTunes libraries. Please be sure
the latest iTunes is installed.

Failed to load required functions(s):
CFPropertyListCreateData
CFPropertyListCreateWithData

I've uninstalled iTunes *and* "Apple Mobile Support" and reinstalled them and rebooted but I still get the same popup.

As a result Redsn0w 0.9.10b6 doesn't even see my phone when I put it in DFU mode, ie. it'll walk me through the process of putting the phone into DFU mode but doesn't "catch it". The older versions of Redsnow and iReb etc. see it as in DFU and Pwned DFU mode without fail.

Anybody having the same problem of have a solution?

Gentlemen,

The wife updated her 4s factory unlocked to IOS 5.1 through the app store yesterday and immediately thereafter her phone stopped working.

I switched my SIM and her phone works with my SIM and my phone doesn't with hers.

So Its the SIM Im thinking-is it possible that the update affected the SIM of its just coincidental?/

Thanks

A recent update to the iTunes Terms and Conditions adds an interesting clause regarding free trials for in-app subscriptions in the iOS App Store. Ever since the launch of the App Store in 2007, users have been clamoring for some kind of demoing system for paid apps. It looks like Apple may be slowly making strides towards that reality.

Publishers “may offer a free trial period” via in-app subscriptions in an iOS app, according to Apple.

Here’s the section in the new iTunes T&C:

Image

Based on Apple’s wording, it looks like this feature is initially for magazine and newspaper publishers, as “certain” in-app subscriptions of this kind “may be designated as “Newsstand” products, in which case they will appear only within the Newsstand application on your device after download.” For instance, The New York Times could offer a free trial period for its $14.99/month in-app subscription to iOS users. You could get the experience of a full subscription for a little while to see if the content is worth your money.

Apple introduced in-app subscriptions in February of 2011. Many content publishers now use Newsstand to distribute subscription-based magazines and newspapers to users via the convenience of billing through the iTunes Store. Most titles come with a free issue in order to hook you into a full subscription, so Apple’s new reference to “free trial periods” is likely intended for more than just Newsstand.

There was a rumor last year that Apple was introducing in-app subscriptions for iOS games when Big Fish Games announced that it was bringing the subscription model to its App Store games in conjunction with Apple. The news turned out to be premature, as Apple pulled Big Fish’s subscription-based game from the App Store over Thanksgiving and declined to comment on the action. We haven’t heard anything about in-app subscriptions for iOS games since then.

Now it’s important to note that this new free trial period reference does not mean we’ll start seeing full-fledged free trials for App Store apps. Apple is talking about in-app subscriptions specifically in this instance. Many iPhone and iPad developers have circumvented Apple’s restrictions on app trials by offering ‘lite’ versions of their apps for users to download and try. The experience is far from ideal, but it’s all that can be done at the moment.

Is there anyway to safeguard myself from having to update to iOS 5.1 in case anything ever happens to mess up on my 4S, maybe due to cydia tweaks or something? Happened to a friend..luckily her iPhone 4 could've been restored cuz I previously made her save the SHSH blobs in case of that same event and it was factory unlocked so no baseband issues..so can I do the same for my 4S? Cuz I know once apple stops signing a firmware theres no way to go back...I sold my iPod a while back so idk much about iOS 5 and the 4S, I know the A5 chip is a bit different in terms of jail breaking and stuff. Also any damn way to get notifications on tapatalk? The android app has it and it's SOO annoying having to check all the time

I read a few of you having problems of call drops & voice not going through on calls from the 4S. At first I thought was a bmobile thing but this morning it happened 10x during the last 20mins!
Is there any way to fix this?

I've had numerous ppl tell me that they were trying to call me and never got through, saying that I just ignoring their calls, but my phone didn't ring. Full reception but still no calls came through. My GF even said she gets mad trying to call me because I let it ring about 4-5 times before I answer but on my end it only rings once :S

I'm thinking about restoring and setting up my device as 'New' ... but i don't want to lose my game data :(
