Contrary to many reports, iPhone 4S owners hoping for a future unlock should not update to iOS 5.0.1 but instead stay on iOS 5.0 to maximize their chances of an unlock.

MuscleNerd has confirmed to iClarified that an untethered iPhone 4S jailbreak for iOS 5.0 will be released at the same time as the iOS 5.0.1 jailbreak, or a day or two later. As always, for those looking to unlock, it is standard operating procedure to stay at the lowest possible baseband.

In fact, its recommended that those already on iOS 5.0.1 should check their build number and downgrade from build 9A406 to 9A405 while Apple is still signing both builds. Due to differences in the basebands, its more likely that an unlock will be found for the earlier build than the later. You can find direct firmware download links here.

We can't guarantee an unlock will be found for iOS 5.0. However, in November MuscleNerd revealed that an unlock was looking 'very promising' and was able to use an exploit to dump the baseband bootrom. However, it's not clear if or when an unlock based on that exploit will materialize.

------

Evidence that Apple is building system-wide iPhone and iPad integration with Facebook, like it already does with Twitter, has been found in the latest beta of iOS 5.1.

Digging through the recently released third beta of iOS 5.1, iMore discovered evidence that Apple could add deep Facebook integration into a future operating system update. In one screenshot shown for the iOS Contacts application, there is an option to enter a person's Facebook user name right below their Twitter account.

System-wide Twitter integration was one of the most-touted features of iOS 5, which was publicly released last October. After its release, signups for Twitter grew by 25 percent.

Deep integration with the social networking service allows users to quickly post Web links from Safari or pictures saved in the Photos application to Twitter. Presumably, future iOS integration with Facebook would offer similar functionality, making it easier for users to share information with their friends on the popular website.

The pre-release build of iOS 5.1 also reportedly includes references to new iPad models named "J1AP" and "J2AP." The references corroborate with rumored code-names of "J1" and "J2" that were first reported last November, when it was said Apple was secretly working on two new iPad models.

Noticed this in 5.0.1 as well

The third beta of iOS 5.1 was provided to developers last week. It is compatible with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2, iPad, and fourth- and third-generation iPod touch.

info needed

Are u getting that from a guy in the misc forum?
I was interested in that because of the low price but didn't bother since an unlock for that baseband was not available at the time.

I'm not sure if there's one now.

The ultrasn0w guy is working on one ....eta unknown but I assume before December 2012 it should be out ....it will support 4.11.08 and the newer baseband to that (was reading it from twitter , can't remember the source but i only follow reputable sources so it's official)

yeah

i read the news on it
no confirmed date :x

Once it fits his/her needs. That's the important thing.

Sort of reliably informed that it will be 4G.
Also it is beig pushed internally as a premium service, so we will see what happens.

Want iOS 5 On Your Stone Age iPhone 2G/3G Or iPod Touch 1G/2G? Try WhiteD00r5

If you're still rocking an older iDevice such as the iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G, iPod touch 2G, or iPod touch 1G, then you will be happy to learn that you can install a ported version of iOS 5 to it that will have most of iOS 5's pleasures in it. The custom firmware has been dubbed WhiteD00r5 by the WhiteD00r dev team. Unfortunately, it won't have everything. Prerequisites include the fact that the iCloud functionality in the custom firmware uses Dropbox instead of iCloud and also the fact that you will not have Notification Center at all. The biggest problem of them all is that you cannot use the App Store from the iDevice itself after you have installed this firmware. Instead, you will have to use iTunes on your computer to download content such as applications and then sync them to the iDevice to use them as you normally would.

What's great about it though? Well, you will have features such as Folders, Multitasking, changing your home screen wallpaper, Newsstand, and Reminders. Older devices have never had the pleasure of Multitasking - not even iOS 4. So this should be a nice little change for anyone interested in trying this out. Of course the best part, being able to change your wallpaper from that annoying black background always has its advantages too. Albeit this port has been made available, you should be prepared and aware that Apple did not release iOS 5 for these devices for a reason - it will be slow, and possibly cause dramatic lag that you are not used to.

WhiteD00r does not require any jailbreak to install. It's a custom firmware file that has been built by the WhiteD00r dev team to resemble a mock up of iOS 5. It's not the true iOS 5 firmware by any means. Where things could have been replaced as substitutes to make them run on the older devices, they have been - such as the fact that they use a Dropbox system for iCloud instead of iCloud itself because Apple's servers would recognize that it's not an official iOS 5 device.

To install WhiteD00r on your stone age iDevice, you don't even need to put your iDevice into 'pwned' DFU mode to install the custom firmware. All you do is simply hold down Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) and click restore in iTunes, then select the WhiteD00r5 firmware which you can download the firmware if you're Google savvy and then iTunes will do the rest. Please head the developer's warning to you:

We absolutely recommend that you make a clean installation without restoring from a backup and we will not provide support if this rule is not respected.

Ryan Petrich was kind enough to inform us that this firmware is a modified iOS 4.2.1 firmware that does violate copyright laws.

Ever since the December release of @pod2g’s “corona” untether for iOS 5.x on A4 and earlier devices, all eyes have been on the attempts to extend it to the A5 devices: the iPhone4S and iPad2. Due to the combined efforts of @pod2g and members of the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team, we’re nearly ready for a general release! All technical hurdles dealing with the underlying technique have been overcome, and it’s now all about making the jailbreak as bug free as possible.

On his blog, @pod2g playfully nicknamed the combined effort a “dream team”. It’s an ironic name, because the past few weeks have left everyone involved with very little sleep and the opportunity to dream :) But we’re now near the final stages of testing the public version of the jailbreak. Please allow time to clean up any remaining bugs in the jailbreak clients.

Jailbreak programs:

To be as flexible as possible, the A5 version of the corona jailbreak will take multiple forms:

Chronic Dev have incorporated the overall flow into a GUI that runs on your Mac or PC. The goal is for the GUI to be enough for most cases.
iPhone Dev have also incorporated the exact same flow into an alternative command-line interface (CLI). This will allow us to help users through individual steps of the jailbreak manually, to both help the user and help improve the overall flow. Although the CLI will also allow the user to perform the entire jailbreak from beginning to end, we anticipate it will be more useful in debugging the occasional errors. The CLI currently has over 20 individual options (in addition to the single “jailbreak” option) that should be useful during debug after the GUI release.
Once all the bugs in the flow are worked out, we’ll also incorporate it into the redsn0w GUI (but still leave the CLI freely available too). In order to maximize the chances of the jailbreak working for everyone, the redsn0w GUI will use native Apple iTunes libraries — this technique is slightly different than how the Chronic Dev GUI handles communications, and should provide nice combined coverage for all the odd computer configurations out there.
Paypal Contributions:

Because there were so many different people and teams involved in the A5 corona release, we all felt the most equitable approach to any Paypal contributions should involve a single shared account. If you do feel the desire to contribute to the “dream team” Paypal account, it will be distributed to the members according to internally agreed-upon proportions :) (Please refer to this blog post for that specific http://is.gd/39YMWg link, to avoid frauds!) The same link will be on both the Chronic Dev and iPhone Dev versions of the GUI. This method seemed like the fairest to everyone involved!

Firmware:

The supported firmware versions will be:

iPhone4S: 5.0 (9A334), 5.0.1 (9A405) and the “other” 5.0.1 (9A406)
iPad2: 5.0.1 (9A405)
iPhone4S owners looking to maximize their chances of achieving an eventual software-based carrier unlock should be staying at 5.0. Everyone else should be at 5.0.1. If you’re an iPhone4S owner who already updated to 5.0.1, it’s too late to go back down to 5.0, but if you’re on 9A406 it is possible to downgrade the BB by going to the 9A405 version of 5.0.1 while the window is still open.

Support:

The overall flow used by the GUI and CLI to inject the A5 corona jailbreak has never been done before, and there may be unforeseen problems once it’s released to the public. It’s very important for you to sync your data, photos, and music before attempting any version of this jailbreak. We’ll be watching the comments section below for signs of any widespread problems, but please be aware that you jailbreak at your own risk!

When:

As mentioned at the start of this post: when testing has shown most of the bugs have been fixed!

I still rather Shazam than soundhound but flip board is definitely one of the best and most thought out apps to ever hit that app store.

iTunes U is 4 and iBooks is 48 at this time on the u.s store. I wish U.W.I lecturers could adopt iTunes U but that may not happen for a long time, if it ever happens at all :|

Did the jaibkrek yesterday on the iPhone 4s and iPad 2 ... Everything went mostly well the iPad gave a couple errors so it took me 2 attempts ...after jailbreak edge and wifi was working fine until I install the miwifi 5.0 package from cydia ... It screwed up my data plan also my wifi on my iPad ...I had to remove the package (which did not help) then factory reset all network settings (this is the solution).
