Two questions

    1. Anyone having iCloud bookmark issues? Think I've asked this before but no better results since. Show up in Safari but not on iPhone
    2. Anyone know a sure-fire way to fix push notifications on an iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1)? Tried a number of methods, Push Doctor included & no results.

Thanks

Just to expand on point 1, I use Google Chrome as my primary browser but use Xmarks to sync bookmarks when necessary between them. I do check Safari to make sure that they are synced & they are, the problem is that they don't seem to get to the iPhone for whatever reason. I normally have to resort to this Apple support article, which is essentially restarting the process, but of course this is not the practical solution Apple wanted when iCloud became a reality.
Also another problem I've been having is the syncing of Mail using @me.com addresses to the iPhone. Using Mail on the Mac is fine, works as normal, but on the iPhone I end up at times missing multiple emails for hours. Its not a unique problem as I found out.

Apple’s latest developer build of iOS might not include the intriguing Siri enhancements that had been rumored earlier this month, but it does include references to several unannounced Apple devices. Some digging through the iOS 5.1 code has revealed three new device code names, giving developers new keywords to hunt down on their constant quest for information on upcoming Apple devices. The first, “iPad2,4,” could refer to a new version of the iPad 2 set to hit Sprint’s network, though we’re just months away from the expected launch of a new iPad so it would be odd for Sprint to adopt an older model so late in its life cycle. Also included in the new iOS build are references to the “iPad3,1″ and iPad3,2,” both of which have already been spied in earlier versions of iOS. Read on for more.

The second new code name, “J33,” refers to a refreshed Apple TV according to 9to5Mac. Reports from earlier this month suggested that a new Apple TV model is on the way, though no solid information is available regarding what the refresh might entail. Siri would be nice, though Apple would likely to hold off on bringing Siri to the big screen until its rumored HDTV is ready to ensure the new feature is novel.

Finally, the “iPhone5,1″ rears its head in this latest iOS beta, iOS developer Filippo Bigarella reports. The device’s launch name is still a mystery, but this is Apple’s next-generation iPhone that is currently expected to launch during the summer next year. Rumors suggest the new phone will feature a redesigned aluminum case, a new processor and a 4-inch display built by Sony and Hitachi.

I asked them around the time the 4S debuted (can't find their reply for whatever reason) but they said essentially eventually. No ETA at the time.

Multiple tricks for gaining quick access to settings toggles on the iPhone’s Home screen have been making the news lately, and many rejoiced that such a thing could be accomplished without needing to jailbreak.

In the iOS 5.1 beta, it’s been discovered that Apple has blocked access to these settings shortcuts. How lame!

Other than some minor bug fixes, code references, and limited Siri API access for developers, iOS 5.1 doesn’t bring much of anything new to the table. It does, however, block the use of URL schemes to access system settings on the Home screen.

iSpazio sounded the alarm earlier today, and we’ve been able to independently confirm that both IconProject and Jeff Broderick’s beautiful web app workaround have been blocked.

Why do they no longer work? We wish we knew. Hopefully Apple isn’t concerned with such trivial things at the moment when we still can’t get the iPhone’s battery to last half a day.

------

You love your iPhone with a passion that knows no bounds. But that's not to say that occasionally your head isn't turned by a good-looking feature on another smartphone platform. If you've been curious about some of the capabilities and user interface glitz of Windows Phone 7.5 (AKA Mango) you're in luck. Microsoft has figured out a way for you to try out those features on your iPhone, so you don't have to embarrass yourself going to a Microsoft Store or playing with a Windows Phone device at Best Buy.

How do you sample a juicy Mango without actually catching cooties from touching a Windows Phone? It's easy -- just point your browser to http://aka.ms/wpdemo, and you are presented with a sparkly representation of the Windows Phone 7.5 Metro UI that you can touch and swipe.

I'll admit it. I went and took a look at Windows Phone 7.5, and then I washed my hands with a sterilizing soap, and put in eyedrops in an attempt to get the UI out of my eyes. But it's well worth a look, just so you know what passes for a mobile operating system in Redmond, Washington.

------

While smartphones sales continue to grow in the U.S., accounting for 56 percent of all cellphone sales in Q3, Apple remained the top individual device maker despite buyers holding out for October's iPhone 4S release.

According to findings released on Tuesday by Nielsen, Apple retained its place as the largest smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. in the third quarter with a nearly 30% share, while the overall market continues to shift toward smart devices, reports Fortune.

The Android and iOS mobile platforms dominate the expanding smartphone market with a 71.1% share, holding 42.8% and 28.3% respectively. Nearly half of all mobile users in the U.S. now own a smartphone, with the devices accounting for 56% of handset purchases made during the quarter ending in September.

RIM's BlackBerry platform came in third with 17.8%, and was followed by Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform, HP's Palm/webOS, Symbian and the fledgling Windows Phone.

In the segmented OS marketplace, Apple's third quarter performance was followed by HTC with a 20.3% share. It should be noted, however, that the Chinese manufacturer's slice of the market includes units running not only Android, but also Microsoft's Windows Mobile and the newer Windows Phone platforms.

Blackberry's third place finish was followed by Samsung's various offerings, which garnered the Korean company a 10% market share. Rounding out the top five was Motorola with 10.6%.

Image

App downloads in the third quarter saw Google and Apple enjoying the lion's share of activity, with a combined total of 83% of all downloads made in the past month coming from Android and iOS devices.

The findings point to a download ratio that is disproportionate to its user base, though an obvious lack of apps from RIM and a transitioning Windows mobile platform partially explain the disparity.

Recently, Google revealed that the company "wasn't happy" about the rate of Android app sales, and hinted to upcoming changes that would bring its online store more in line with Apple's.

Android's proliferation in the mobile space is expected to push app downloads past those of iOS, though AppleInsider recently reported that Google's revenue from its app store is grossly outpaced by Apple's model.

------

After former Microsoft Business Unit head Stephen Elop (now CEO of Nokia) strongly hinted at it (above on the iPhone) and told T3 they were considering it, a report from The Daily claims sources have confirmed Microsoft has an iPad version of its Office app in the works alongside a new Lion compatible version of the desktop suite. Up until now the iWork suite of apps– Keynote, Numbers, and Pages– have arguably been the go to productivity apps on iOS and the counterpart to Microsoft Office’s dominance on OS X and Windows PCs. If implemented well, we could theoretically see Office for iOS eating into some of Apple’s and the iWork suite’s user base. Microsoft is expected to introduce the app(s) at a similar price point as well. The Daily reports:

It’s assumed that both of these would work with Office 365 as well as mobile versions, such as Windows Phone’s Office Hub. Because it would be compatible with these full suites rather than as stand-alone apps, the pricing will most likely be significantly lower than existing Office products. In fact, it’s likely the cost will be around the $10 price point that Apple has established for its Pages, Numbers and Keynote products.

There has, however, been some conflicting reports regarding whether or not Microsoft is actively developing the app. In April 2010,Elop said they would take the “wait and see” approach when it comes to supporting iPad telling Bloomberg, ”We never say never, but we have no current plans”.

An iPad edition of Office would likely be built by a unit within Microsoft’s consumer business that creates versions of Office that work with Apple’s Macintosh personal computers. Kristen Woody, a spokesman for that unit, says it “doesn’t have anything to share at this time.”

Microsoft has an important decision to make: Do they “bless” the iPad with the critical business software that businesses need but at the same time risk hurting their Windows PC business by making them replaceable?

Apple has released Safari 5.1.2 to users this afternoon, available by direct download or by hitting up Software Update. The update is relatively minor, but brings along bug fixes that address issues of stability, extensive memory usage, fixing webpages that were flashing white, and now allows PDFs to be displayed within web content. Go ahead and download!

Address issues that could cause hangs and excessive memory usage

Couldn't find anything in this thread, but saw in another where someone said if you bring in an iPad through your skybox it's exempt from duties and VAT:

http://www.trinituner.com/v3/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=304291&p=5213742&hilit=ipad#p5213742

Is this in fact so? I know if you bring in an iPod or iPhone via skybox customs will pwn you. But do they actually allow iPads through without charges? Anyone ever bought one in via skybox and had customs charge them for it, and if so did you have any recourse?

ONLY Apple iPads though, almost all other tablets are considered electronics and would be charged duty and VAT

Not even the threat of costly early-termination fees are enough to keep many consumers from jumping ship for the newest iPhone. Some 45 percent of cell phone owners have broken their carrier’s contract in order to grab Apple’s iconic smartphone, according to a new survey showing just how loyal many people are to the Apple brand.

According to Consumer Research Partners, 45 percent of people surveyed broke a contract with their current or former wireless carrier in order to pocket the iPhone 4S. More than 70 percent of that group paid more than $100 early-termination fees on top of the $199 to $399 price of the handset.

The findings also show the majority (71%) of iPhone rule breakers are upgrading from an earlier model — just 18 percent were switching from an Android or other smartphone. This only reinforces the belief that Apple revenue is all about the upgrade, rather than Android owners suddenly falling for the sleek and sexy iPhone.

About a third of the survey respondents said they left a carrier to buy the 4S. AT&T seems to be the largest benefactor, registering 49 percent of the iPhone purchases, versus 34 percent for Verizon Wireless and 17 percent for Sprint.

Coming from a mixed marriage (my wife has the iPhone, I own a relic from the past), I can understand the strong urge to break the bonds holding you into the feature phone wasteland. The result of just 18 percent of switchers coming outside the iPhone ecosphere is a bit surprising, but the price has to be a large reason why people buy an Android handset. If price is upper-most in your mind, you likely are more willing to stay put, but the pain must be nearly unbearable.

------

Back in April, Apple had a bit of a PR problem when it was discovered that iPhones were storing a cache of data on which GPS locations that handset had visited in an unencrypted file. The whole thing was just a bug, but the controversy was dubbed LocationGate, and Apple even had to testify in front of the Senate about the matter.

The whole fiasco even prompted an email from Steve Jobs, which dropped something of a bombshell: he said Apple doesn’t track anyone’s location, but that Android tracked everyone.

At the time, there wasn’t a lot of proof to back up Steve’s assertion, but as it often does, time has proven Steve Jobs right. Android phones do track you. In fact, software that comes pre-installed on millions of Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones log everything you do with your device, and sends them off secretly to its own servers.

25-year-old Android developer Trevor Eckhart has discovered a piece of software that comes installed on most Android, BlackBerry and Nokia phones called Carrier IQ secretly logs everything a user does with his or her phone, including text messages, encrypted web searches, phone calls, location and, well, you name it.

What is Carrier IQ? Ostensibly, it is software meant to monitor a user’s experience with a phone so that carriers and phone manufacturers can do quality control. However, Eckhart calls the software a “rootkit,” which prompted Carrier IQ to threaten him with a huge lawsuit and deny that its software logs keystrokes.

To see how invasive Carrier IQ is, a video posted by Eckhart shows that the software not only intercepts encrypted web searches, but logs each number as he dials it, and even received or sent text messages.

Once logged, Carrier IQ then sends all of this data to its own servers. That’s incredible. One privately held company that almost no one has ever heard of has the complete logs of every email, phone call, web search and text message ever sent or received by millions of Android, Blackberry and Nokia users.

Absolutely insane. Even worse? There’s no way to opt out of the Carrier IQ “service.” On Android phones, your only choice is to root your phone and replace the operating system with one without the software pre-installed.

This is absolutely insane. Apple was practically crucified over LocationGate, which was just a cache of GPS locations stored on users’ home machines. Meanwhile, almost every Android phone out there is reading people’s emails and logging their passwords, while no one bats an eye.

After what seemed like an endless wait, Infinity Blade II is almost here! The follow-up to Epic and Chair Entertainment’s elegiac App Store masterpiece has just hit the App Store in New Zealand, and will creep out slowly around the globe from there, hitting the US App Store at 11pm ET tonight.

We’ll have a review in the next couple of days, but so far, early reviews suggest it’s even better than the first one. We can’t wait to give it a spin.

------

In the latest report regarding Apple’s future adoption of LTE/4G for its mobile devices, Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo is allegedly set to release a 4G-equipped iPad in the summer of 2012. An LTE-equppied iPhone is then set to premiere in the fall of next year.

We’ve been hearing whispers about a 4G/LTE-flavored iPhone for quite some time, and Macotakara is relaying that Apple has been in talks with carriers about making 4G a reality for its next-generation devices.

Executives from NTT DoCoMo reportedly visited Apple in the U.S. this month and met with CEO Tim Cook. Apparently Apple is looking to release a 4G iPad next year, if this report is to be believed.

A recent report from The Wall Street Journal said that Apple and NTT DoCoMo had been unable to reach an agreement, mainly due to the fact that NTT DoCoMo wanted Apple to let it install its own pre-loaded apps on the iPhone. While Apple will obviously never let such a thing happen, the two seem to have reached some sort of deal that is in the final stages of negotiations.

Carriers are heavily promoting 4G Android devices in advertising campaigns and print marketing. Many analysts believe that Apple must release a 4G iPhone next year to stay relevant. We find that hard to believe, since Apple released a non-4G iPhone this year and it seems to be doing just fine.
