Forty minutes until kickoff, and line-ups have been announced:
BAYERN
Starters: Neuer, Van Buyten, Boateng, Lahm, Badstuber, Ribéry, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Tymoshchuk, Müller, Gomez
Subs: Butt, Rafinha, Contento, Pranjić, Alaba, Gustavo, Olić
NAPOLI
Starters: De Sanctis, Aronica, Campagnaro, Cannavaro, Maggio, Hamšík, Zúñiga, Gargano, Inler, Cavani, Lavezzi
Subs: Rosati, Fideleff, Dossena, Fernández, Santana, Dzemaili, Mascara
So for Bayern, Rafinha and Gustavo remain on the bench. Interesting … I have to admit I’m confused about Rafinha. Of course we don’t see what goes on at training every day, etc, but I have to admit Jupp Heynckes and I differ wildly in our valuations of him as a player.
Napoli’s line-up is strong up front and in the middle, not world-beaters at the back. I think we might see some goals today.
Viva viva FC Bayern!

the goal stands - and Neuer's record has ended. Though the run is now over, Bayern has plenty of reason to be satisfied. The team has played more games and faced arguably better competition than any of Europe's elite teams, and its record of two goals conceded in 15 matches is, quite comfortably, the best of any team on the continent. The Napoli match in no way changes the German giant's status as a world-class defensive unit, and more than anything else, serves as a benchmark for the rest of the season.

game starts 930 today

Bayern ready to 'set off on a new run'

Munich, Germany – Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was confident after last weekend's unlucky loss to Hannover that Bayern Munich would "set off on a new run," starting earlier this week in the Pokal Cup.
Neuer, Germany's No. 1 goalkeeper, was correct on the first part, although his role was a spectator as Hans-Jorg Butt earned the nod in a 6-0 victory against overmatched second-division side Ingolstadt.
A number of other Bayern Munich starters joined Neuer on the bench and Bastian Schweinsteiger was left off the roster with a cold, as Bayern cruised into the quarterfinals of the German Cup.
It should be easy for Bayern to forget about the loss to Hannover, a 2-1 final that saw the hosts score on a questionable penalty and a wildly deflected shot against the 10-man visitors.
"Overall, it was a very unlucky defeat, but we're very stable, we have a lot of international players in the squad," Neuer said, "and we know what we're capable of.
"We won't drive ourselves mad, we still believe in ourselves."
Neuer had his 771-minute shutout streak ended on the penalty kick, but the FCB man was not worried that his streak ended as the third-longest in Bundesliga history.
"I'd have liked more clean sheets, but it was never our top priority," Neuer said. "I'd rather we'd come away with the three points."
Although Neuer has been relatively untested in matches, facing less than two shots per game, he said, "I get plenty to do in training."
And after the win over Ingolstadt, Bayern proved its depth will be crucial as it pursues the Bundesliga, Pokal Cup and Champions League titles this season - a treble it just missed in 2010 when it only lost the Champions League final.
With a three-point cushion atop the standings, Bayern's margin for error isn't large, but a return to form against three-win Nurnberg will again have all the other German teams chasing the record champions.
Defending champions and second-place Borussia Dortmund take a four-fixture win streak to Stuttgart on Saturday, when third-place Schalke hosts Hoffenheim in search of its fourth win in its last five league games.
Monchengladbach will try to end a three-game slide when Hannover visits, Mainz hosts Werder Bremen with both clubs looking to stop winless skids, and Hertha Berlin visits Wolfsburg in Saturday's other matches.
Cologne will try for its fourth win in its last six when it hosts Augsburg on Sunday, when Hamburg hosts Kaiserslautern with both teams looking to extend a run of matches without a loss to three games.
Last-place Freiburg hosts mid-table Bayer Leverkusen on Friday to kick off the weekend's action.

Arsenal FC's Robin van Persie a £20m target for Bayern Munich - report

Crunch Sports Staff - 29 Oct 2011
Bayern Munich are reportedly preparing to launch a £20million bid for Arsenal captain Robin van Persie.

The Netherlands international has less than two years left on his existing contract and earlier this month revealed he had no plans to discuss a new deal until the end of the season.

However, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on Thursday said the club have started negotiations with Van Persie over a new deal, adding that he was "confident" his skipper would sign a new contract at the Emirates.

But reports on Friday suggested the Dutchman is still likely to keep Arsenal waiting until the end of the season before beginning contract talks.

The likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Anzhi Makhachkala are all believed to be keen on signing Van Persie next year.

And according to Caughtoffside.com, Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are also keen on the forward.

Although a January move is highly unlikely, it is widely thought that Van Persie will review Arsenal's ambition at the end of the season before making a decision on his future.

And that could mean Arsenal need to at least qualify for next season's Champions League to avoid the possibility of yet another key player leaving the club.

Thomas Strunz: Of course Bayern Munich is capable of beating Barcelona
In the first of a three-part exclusive interview with Goal.com, the Euro 1996 winner discusses the state of his former club team, who are leading the Bundesliga in fine form
Oct 30, 2011 5:00:00 AM
By Maximilian Bensinger

Following Germany's perfect finish in the Euro 2012 qualifiers and Bayern Munich's flying start to the 2011-12 campaign, Goal.com caught up with Thomas Strunz for a three-part interview.

In the first installment, the retired midfielder discussed the state of his former club, where he spent a combined eight seasons. The Euro 1996 winner offered his opinions on coach Jupp Heynckes, as well as predeccessors Louis van Gaal and Jurgen Klinsmann, and weighed in with his thoughts on key figures Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gomez.

Strunz also analysed the chances die Roten would have in a head-to-head tie with Barcelona, and proposed a novel approach to combatting the Catalan giants' formidable attack.

Without further ado, Goal.com proudly present the first of our three-part interview. Be sure to check out the second and third installments on Monday and Tuesday.

Goal.com: Did Jurgen Klinsman underestimate the difference between being national team coach and Bundesliga coach?

Thomas Strunz: "I think Jurgen Klinsmann underestimated [the Bundesliga] when he was Bayern coach. I do not think that he is a club coach. He works as a visionary and he was involved in many things that Bayern and the DFB do to this day. But I do not think he's a guy whose strengths are in creating a daily training schedule."

Do Bayern now have the right coach?

Thomas Strunz: "Jupp Heynckes is the perfect coach for Bayern. He has a lot of experience and he knows how to deal with stars. A young coach probably would not have worked with such top stars. Heynckes, however, worked in the past with many great players at Bayern Munich and Real Madrid."

Would it have been at all possible to have continued with Louis van Gaal?

Thomas Strunz: "To have continued with Louis van Gaal, they would have needed to replace the entire team. The situation was totally disjointed and Van Gaal was stubbornly clinging to his system. In particularly, he curtailed the freedom of the creative players. But that is necessary to reach the top level. On the other hand, he made the entire success of the team depend on these players. That was a spiral that led into the abyss. It is wonderful now to see the pleasure Franck Ribery takes in playing. His facial expression and body language is completely different now than, says, a year ago."

Was Van Gaal blinded by his success from his first season?

Thomas Strunz: "It was a mistake from the whole club. They were dazzled by reaching the Champions League final in their first season together. In actual analysis, it is forgotten that they had the Arjen Roben factor. That made the difference."

Can Bayern again become one of the best teams in Europe?

Thomas Strunz: "The team is hungry for success. The combination of team, new coach - and the events of last season may provide a lot of momentum. The club will benefit at least from the fact that the team won nothing last year. In the end, luck must also play a role. They can face Barcelona in the quarter-finals and lose.

The Catalans are the epitome of a top team. Would Bayern have a chance against them?

Thomas Strunz: "Of course they can beat Barcelona. In two games, anything is possible. So much can happen. But what is clear is that Barcelona are the favourites."

Do you have a recipe for success? How do you play against Barcelona?

Thomas Strunz: If you look at their tactical formation, they are the only top team that play with no real centre forward. We saw this extremely well in the Champions League final against Manchester United. [Rio] Ferdinand and [Nemanja] Vidic had no real opponents and were completely overwhelmed. They could not be focused on anyone. Maybe a team could try to play with a sweeper. They could operate with three men in front of a central defender. With a back four, the two central defenders are facing a free space. And always, Villa, Iniesta, Messi and Pedro try to get inside. Why should this space be given up?"

Further to the subject: So Bayern use a sweeper vs Barca. Do they need Robben?

Thomas Strunz: "Currently, Bayern do not necessarily need him. At the moment, Arjen Robben is the problem! The team have shown that they can play successfully without him. He's just a great individualist. He must adapt his game. Ribery has done it too and still has complete freedom. But Ribery also helps out on the defensive and has adapted his game to the team. Robben will have to do that too. The question is whether or not he will do so.

Is Robben's standing within the team so great that he can continue to do as he wants? Some even speculate that he is the secret Bayern captain.

Thomas Strunz: "For me, Bastian Schweinsteiger stands at the top of the team hierarchy. Then come a few of the national team players."

Now that we have already talked about Robben, who is the most important player at Bayern?

Thomas Strunz: "Currently, the dependence on Mario Gomez is the greatest. If he is unavailable, then there's [Nils] Petersen and [Ivica] Olic. Mario Gomez is for me an absolute goal machine. He is physically strong, robust, can shoot well with left and right foot and is also fast. He has everything you need to be a top striker. In his position you don't need to be a dribbler. Gomez is one of the top strikers in Europe."

Bayern 4: Nurnberg 0!
http://www.goal.com/en-us/match/60776/b ... erg/report

Bayern Munich triumphed 4-0 in the Bavarian derby against a bland Nurnberg side which never looked like troubling its local rivals at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.

Mario Gomez got the league leaders off to a flying start, before goals from Bastian Schweinsteiger, Franck Ribery and another Gomez effort secured a convincing victory.

The hosts took the lead almost immediately from the kickoff. Schweinsteiger crossed from the right, and Gomez was there at the near post to head the ball past a helpless Alexander Stephan.

It was the same combination that linked for the second goal. Gomez collected Philipp Lahm’s pass with his back to goal, and laid the ball back to Schweinsteiger who blasted the ball past Stephan from 25 meters.

It was an anaemic performance from the away side, and it could have been facing a three-goal deficit after 25 minutes, when Timmy Simons almost put a corner past his own keeper.

The third goal eventually arrived five minutes from the end of the first half. Ribery collected on the left, moved inside and coolly tucked the ball in at the near post from the edge of the box.

The second period started in exactly the same manner as the first ended – with Bayern Munich dominating possession.

However, the visitors who had the first chance of the half. Jens Hegeler went on a mazy run, and slipped the ball past Daniel Van Buyten to Tomas Pekhart, whose first touch let him down and allowed Manuel Neuer to claim the ball at his feet.

The hosts seemed determined to show there was no chance of a comeback, though. Daniel Van Buyten sent a header narrowly over the bar, before sending a phenomenal through ball to Gomez, who rounded Stephan, but a sliding Philipp Wollscheid prevented the 26-year-old from making it 4-0.

The home side struck the post twice before the fourth goal finally arrived. Toni Kroos picked up the ball on the left, and went down to the byline before cutting the ball back to Gomez, who was left with the simplest of tap-ins.

Fifteen minutes from time, Luiz Gustavo sent a defense splitting ball to Muller, but the 22-year-old’s shot was straight at Stephan, who made a simple save.

It mattered little. Four was enough for Jupp Heynckes’ men, who remain at the summit of the table. Nurnberg, meanwhile, remain in 13th spot.

Schweini boost for Bayern's Napoli test
31 October 2011, 06:41

Bayern Munich expect to have Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger fit for Wednesday's Champions League clash against Napoli, despite the Germany star suffering a calf knock.

The 27-year-old limped out of Bayern's 4-0 home win over Nuremberg on Saturday in the German league after taking a knock to the muscle.

Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes initially suggested the Germany star would struggle to be fit to face the Italians, but although Schweinsteiger sat out training on Sunday, he is expected to be able to play.

"It's significantly better," Heynckes said when asked about the injury on Sunday while Schweinsteiger was expected to train with the team again on Tuesday.

Heynckes is also waiting on the fitness of Belgium defender Daniel van Buyten who has a bruised left foot from the win over Nuremberg, but is expected to play.

If the centre-back is ruled out, Germany defender Jerome Boateng can step in to replace him, while Toni Kroos can partner Brazil's Luis Gustavo at the back of Bayern's midfield if Schweinsteiger is not fit.

After wins over Manchester City and Villarreal, plus a draw at Napoli, Bayern have a two-point lead at the top of Group A while the Italians are second in the table and both sides are unbeaten in their European campaigns so far.

Bayern are eager to claim their ninth straight home win at Munich's Allianz Arena.

They have turned their state-of-the-art stadium into something of a fortress of late as Borussia Moenchengladbach were the last visiting team to score in Munich when they poached a shock 1-0 win back on August 7.

Since then Bayern have scored 33 goals without reply.

Napoli travel to Munich on the back of a domestic defeat and have captain Paolo Cannavaro suspended.

Lying second in Serie A before kick-off, Walter Mazzarri’s men fell 2-1 away to Catania on Saturday evening and are now five points off leaders Juventus in the Italian league.

Despite the defeat, Mazzarri saw enough positive play from his team to be confident in Munich.

"In the second half, despite being a man down we pinned Catania down in their area for long periods," said Mazzarri.

"Football is like this, sometimes things go well and others they go badly but if we keep playing like this they'll mostly go well."

UEFA Champions League 2011, Bayern Munich Vs. Napoli: Bavarians Fight Azzurri For Top Spot

On October 18, Bayern Munich and Napoli faced off in Naples with the top spot in Group A of the UEFA Champions League on the line. With Manchester City sitting behind both teams with unbelievable talent and questionable form, a loss would be crippling to either team. Both teams grabbed a point in a physical 1-1 draw, but that hardly tells the story.

Napoli were not anywhere near their best at home. Bayern Munich, though their play could reasonably be described as dirty on the night, were also the much better footballing side. They kept the ball better and created more chances as Napoli's front three struggled after scoring their opening goal. The goal was an own goal, and Napoli never actually got a shot on target.

At the Allianz Arena, a repeat performance will almost certainly not earn Napoli a point. Bayern Munich has won their last two matches in all competitions by a combined score of 10-0, as they absolutely bulldozed Ingolstadt in the German Cup and Nürnburg - not a bad side by any stretch of the imagination - in the league. Nürnburg played athletic fullback Timothy Chandler as a midfielder in an attempt to slow down Franck Ribery and their strategy was unsuccessful. Ribery scored a goal and was a creative force. Mario Gomez scored twice, taking his goal tally in all competitions over the last year and a third to 65 in 78 matches, 17 of which were substitute appearances.

If Walter Mazzarri sticks with his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, his front three are going to have to create a high volume of goal-scoring opportunities and his central midfielders, arguably his team's weakest point, will have to have terrific games. There is an inherent disadvantage in playing a back three against one and three striker systems like Bayern's, so the performances of the individual players will have to be spectacular for Napoli to get points in Munich.

City are now second in the group as the climbed above Napoli - who lost 3-2 at leaders Bayern Munich.

A scintillating match at the Allianz Arena saw Bayern dominated the opening half and the led 3-0 at the break with the ubiquitous Mario Gomez converting a treble.

But the second-half was a different affair as Napoli responded with Federico Fernandez heading home twice to make for a nervy ending but Bayern held out.

Both sides also finished the match with ten-men with Juan Zuniga and Holger Badstuber red-carded.

It was great to see robben and olic back in the fold yesterday but dortmund played hard for their win. I kinda concerned about neuer tho. He issa bess keeper and all but because of the tough defence, we have the occasional ball that comes through that catches him flat footed. The keeper coach have to looking into that.

what worries me is that I dont think we need Robben, whenever he is injured we win the big games when he comes back it seems that we have to readjust to his style....i saw a couple of times he could have fed Kroos or Gomez in the area and he didnt, also saw where Gomez could have set up a shot for Robben at the top of the area but he 'chose' not to......Neuer really got caught flat footed as u said, but he did save an awesome one 0n one with the Japanese striker. however that Goetze free kick would have caught him if it didnt deflect

I dont think Robben really is suited for the one-twos in the area that Bayern (as well as the rest of clubs all over) try to get (which really works with the national side when swienstiger, klose, muller, ozeil and khedira are at their best (gomez still struggling in this department)
