Now that Update-gate is taken care of...

Image

Businessweek’s lengthy profile on Apple’s youngest VP (of iOS software) Scott Forstall is full of little nuggets. Here are the best bits:

Forstall’s older brother, Bruce, has been a senior software design engineer at Microsoft for 20 years; imagine the Thanksgiving dinner conversations.

“He was as close to Steve as anybody at the company,” says Andy Miller, who headed Apple’s fledgling iAd group.

Insiders say he has such a fraught relationship with other members of the executive team—including lead designer Jony Ive and Mac hardware chief Bob Mansfield—that they avoid meetings with him unless Tim Cook is present.

He’s known to have a taste for the Mercedes-Benz SL55 AMG, in silver, the same car Jobs drove and has a signature on-stage costume: black shoes, jeans, and a black zippered sweater. (He favors Reyn Spooner Hawaiian shirts for normal days at the office.)

“I once referred to Scott as Apple’s chief a–hole,” says former Apple software engineer Mike Lee, who left the company in 2010. “And I meant it as a compliment.”

“He knows what he wants, and he’s driven to get it,” says AT&T (T) Chief Technology Officer John Donovan. “He can be relentless about getting it.” “Scott’s a pretty amazing guy,” says Vic Gundotra, a senior vice-president at Google. “In terms of running an operating system team, he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen.”

According to the story, iPod godfather Tony Fadell and Jean-Marie Hullot CTO of Apple’s application division until 2005 left Apple after clashing repeatedly with Forstall. Jon Rubinstein, a former iPod chief who left for Palm in 2006, chatted amiably at a Silicon Valley party last month, until Forstall’s name came up. Then he turned away abruptly. “Goodbye!” he said.

He graduated high school as co-valedictorian with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. (His high school sweatheart/future wife was the other co-valedictorian.)

Before the iPhone 4 went to market, Forstall persuaded Jobs to allow dozens of his engineers to carry prototypes of the device to better test its network performance and minimize dropped calls, says a former Apple employee who was a manager at the time. That’s how Gizmodo got ahold of it.

Forstall has cashed in over $40 million in Apple Stock. Brian Marshall, an analyst at ISI Group, says that he would consider downgrading Apple stock if Forstall were to leave.

The idea is that Forstall isn’t quite a Steve Jobs, but he’s the closest all around package that Apple has.

iOS has seen an enormous amount of change over the last few years. When the first iPhone was released, the most entertaining thing to do was to watch YouTube videos and try to find a few web-based games. This was a time before apps, or multi-tasking, or folders. Looking back, it’s funny to think how revolutionary the iPhone and iOS was at the time when it lacked many features that we take for granted today.
Here’s a look back at the evolution of iOS.

Image

iPhone OS 1.0

At the unveiling of the Original iPhone, Steve Jobs described the iPhone’s software as a variant of OS X. Apple literature referred to the iPhone’s operating system as simply iPhone OS (it was changed to iOS a few years later). Despite being revolutionary software, iOS 1 shipped with only a few apps – Mail, iPod, Calendar, Photos, Clock, Text, Safari, Notes, YouTube, Calculator, Maps, Settings, Camera, Stocks, and Phone. There wasn’t even an App Store or iTunes Store app in the original version of iPhone OS.

Rather than support third-party applications, Steve Jobs encouraged developers to program web-based applications that would behave like native apps. A couple of months later Apple changed their mind and created the first iOS SDK that was released in March 2008, paving the way for the 500,000 apps supported on the iPhone today.

Image

iPhone OS 2.0

The biggest news coming with iOS 2 was the incredible App Store Apple built for their iOS devices. Released in July 11th, 2008, the App Store gave users access to thousands of app created by third-party developers. Supported by iTunes and Apple’s carefully crafted ecosystem, the App Store pushed the iPhone years ahead of the competition by providing limitless possibilities on the iPhone. Pretty soon everyone was hearing the catchphrase, “There’s an App for that.”
Push email was also brought to the iPhone via iOS 2. To make room for all the new app icons on the Springboard, Apple introduced homescreen pages. Other notable features that appeared in iOS 2 were the ability to open MS Office docs, a Contacts icon, ability to take screen captures, ability to save photos in Safari to the Photos app, parental controls, Genius playlist creation, and the addition of emoji.

Image

iOS 3.0

iOS 3 was one of the biggest iOS releases Apple has pushed out. While it didn’t have any earth shattering new features, the small improvements Apple made to iOS were many. Most of the new features could already be found on competing platforms and were highly requested additions.
Released on June 17 2009, iOS 3 brought the ability to finally cut, copy and paste. GPS accuracy was also greatly improved, and Apple added a magnetic compass to the iPhone’s Maps app. Video recording had not been supported in iOS until the release of iOS 3, however the iPhone 3GS was the only iOS device that could take video. Along with adding support for MMS, SMS app was renamed to Messages. Find My iPhone was introduced through MobileMe. Spotlight search also came into play in iOS 3 as well as the ability to tether an iPhone to a computer.

Image

iOS 4

iOS 4 made the iPhone feel like a truly post-PC device. Released on June 17 2010, one of the biggest features of iOS 4 was the video chatting capabilities of FaceTime. Apple also introduced iBooks, which was the first time Apple offered native support for eBooks on iOS devices. Along with iBooks, a custom dictionary was added. Multitasking giving users the ability to switch between apps without losing what they were doing.
To help users’ phones be more organized, Apple introduced two new features – the ability to organize photos into albums, and the creation of Folders on the homescreen for apps. A small visual appearance change was made by redesigning the dock to be similar to that of the iPad. Digital zooming was added to the camera. Spotlight now boasted the capability of searching the web or Wikipedia along with the iPhone’s files. GameCenter was also introduced with iOS 4, fostering a community of competitive Angry Bird slinging.

Image

iOS 5

In 2011 Apple pulled out some major weapons to advance the iOS platform in the smartphone operating system wars. The addition of over 200 new features has made iOS 5 the biggest iOS update Apple has released.
User complaints of the iOS Notification system were finally addressed by adding the new Notification Center. Looking to subvert SMS plans, Apple released iMessage with iOS 5 – a service similar to Black Berry Messenger, except iMessage works across all iOS devices. The Camera app has seen significant updates with the ability to edit photos being included in the update. Borrowing from popular apps like Instagram, Apple added a “Read Later” feature to Safari in iOS 5. Wireless syncing was also introduced, which has made iOS devices PC-independent. Twitter integration has made sharing content with friends easier than ever before on an iPhone. Other changes introduced was a Reminders app, redesigned Calendar app, Newsstand, Game Center improvements, and Cards.
A few changes were also made to the iPad version of iOS 5. Apple added new multi-touch gestures that lead to faster app switching and four finger swipe to get back to the homescreen. The Music player on the iPad was revamped with a completely new design. The inclusion a new split-keyboard for the iPad has also made typing significantly easier when holding an iPad with two hands.

------

MuscleNerd has announced that the UltraSn0w unlock will get iOS 5 support by tomorrow.

will coordinate ultrasn0w iOS5 compatibility update to come out *after* a planned MobileSubstrate update tomorrow

The UltraSn0w unlock supports devices on the 01.59.00, 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00 basebands.

As long as you were using a gevey sim before you will be fine.

If you are using ultrasnow for your unlock then you should wait since it is not compatible with iOS5 as yet.

Hope this helped

anybody tried this as yet? with ah gevey sim?

iDid. However when I restarted after the update I needed to use an AT&T sim to activate the phone. It's curious though because Snowbreeze supposed to hacktivate also (so no need to use AT&T sim).

The Gevey sim works with no problems at all to make calls though as Snowbreeze retains your baseband.

^ once you backed up your phone before doing the update, it will restore your backup automatically after updating. All your SMS, contacts, photos, apps, everything will be there on the new OS.

Apple’s current line of MacBook Pros is heavily constrained with all models appearing to be nearly out of stock. Don’t fear, though, if you want a MacBook Pro because new models are right around the corner. Updates to all MacBook Pro models have appeared in Apple’s inventory system for the 13 inch, 15 inch, and 17 inch screen sizes. Apple will continue to ship two 13 inch models, two 15 inch models, and one 17 inch model.

This MacBook Pro refresh will not be the expected re-designed models, but will likely bring some marginally faster processors and the Bluetooth 4.0 technology that Apple started shipping in the latest MacBook Airs and the new iPhone 4S. The new internal code names for the updated MacBook Pro line are K90IA (13 inch), K91A (15 inch), and K92A (17 inch). The A in the codename signifies this next MacBook Pro refresh as being relatively minor.

------

The iPhone 4S has sold out completely across AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint reports Businessweek. While you can still get your order in, delivery in AT&T’s case has been pushed back 3 -4 weeks. Shipping should be similar for Verizon and Sprint too, but they aren’t providing a time frame on their website.

Apple announced it had sold 1 million iPhone 4Ss across 100 world carriers in 24 hours in contrast with 600,000 across the five launch countries in 2010 with the iPhone 4.

Tomorrow the iPhone 4S goes on sale, and stores should have an extra stock of the iPhone 4S for those who haven’t pre-ordered yet. To get your hands on those, you’ll probably have to hop in line pretty early.

ultrasn0w 1.2.4 released for iOS5    :drinking: :drinking: :drinking:

The supported basebands for the iPhone 3G and 3GS are 04.26.08, 05.11.07, 05.12.01, 05.13.04, and 06.15.00. The baseband supported for the iPhone4 is 01.59.00

The majority of people who use ultrasn0w at iOS5 right now will probably be those with old-bootrom iPhone3GS devices, since they already have an untethered jailbreak via redsn0w. For everyone else, the iOS5 jailbreak is currently tethered and you need to “Just boot” tethered with redsn0w every time your phone reboots. That’s not always easy to do if your phone reboots while away from home!

Note: there’s a special “trick” that iPhone3GS owners with baseband 06.15 need for iOS5. During the new setup screens you see when you start iOS5 for the first time, you’ll be asked about Location Services. Be sure to select “Disable Location Services” when asked! Later on in the setup, you’ll have the chance to turn on Location Services again when asked if you want to use “Find my iPhone”. It’s fine to turn it back on at that point, if that’s your desire (or you can always go in and enable it in Settings.app).

So I tried that with my iPhone 3GS, and still I get "No Service", so I'm guessing it didn't work :(
Any help from you Apple Gurus would be much appreciated.

For those of you with an iPhone 4 (AT&T) using a Gevey sim on TSTT, here's how I did it.

Notes:
1. Using Windows
2. You will need an AT&T sim to activate

Step 1. Download snowbreeze in windows
Step 2. Create an ipsw using "Preserve baseband" option

Keep in mind this does not jailbreak. When you are finished your phone will work like you buy it out of an Apple store. Your probably saying "WTF! I dont need that then!!"

Well any ipsw created that is jailbroken will not work with the Gevey sim anyway so you really dont have a choice. Another advantage is your wont have to worry about tethered/untethered etc. It will boot normally.

Step 3. Use snowbreeze and put your phone in DFU mode
Step 4. Restore in iTunes using shift click ipsw
Step 5. When the phone reboots, put in the AT&T sim and activate
Step 6. Power down and put in Gevey sim and proceed as your would

Step 7. Profit!

Nice guide there....now if someone can do it for the 3GS that'll be great!
I've tried almost everything....sigh

EDIT:
Ok, I finally got it to work on the 3GS.

1. Download the custom sn0wbreeze 5.0 ipsw
2. Place in DFU mode
3. Restore using the custom firmware
4. Install ultrasn0w from Cydia
5. Have fun!

My problem was that I used redsn0w to update using a non-custom firmware, this messed with the baseband. So I had to flash the baseband back to the iPad one, and then go thru the above process.

Hope this helps.
