What does the term clipping means?

I have heard people refer to this term to quite a few sound systems,all I gathered is it had to do with the baseline not sounding smooth or something like that,can one of you in here clarify what it means and by extension what causes it? thanks?

Is this is common problem amongst competitors today?? Because every show I go,only a few systems have a clean,smooth sounding baseline,the others are just rugged and distorted.
