Scientists create Glowing Cats...

GREEN glowing cats have been created by scientists hoping to beat the Aids virus.

Tabbies had a gene from a fluorescent jellyfish inserted into their DNA — and have since given birth to luminous kittens.

When placed under blue light, their fur, claws and whiskers emit the eerie glow. US researchers used the glowing gene to track a protein found in macaque monkeys that stops them developing Aids. The protein was also inserted in the cats' DNA.

The cats became resistant to FIV, the feline version of the Aids virus HIV. Eric Poeschla — leading the New York study — said: "This can help cats and people."


I want HIV stopped as much as anyone -- I've lost a lot of friends, loved ones, co-workers to the virus. But, I feel strongly it is way too dangerous to mess with genes like this -- would you really want your grandchildren to glow in the dark? And, I don't believe we have the right to mess with other, non-consenting sentient beings in such ways. It is so cruel, it is unethical. Have you seen photos of chimpanzees who have grown old being tortured with sickness, isolation and medical procedure torments for the sake of human health? Horrifying.

they only used the glowing genes from the jelly fish to track the proteins in the monkeys to get the dna needed to stop the FIV in cats... your grand children will not glow, and if given the chance, i am sure any of your lost friends etc would prefer to glow than be gone.. but i hear ya on the messing with genes, but this is where we are headed, like it or not, hopefully we all live to see and beat cancer when they find a cure for it and others through medicine/technology/genealogy like this

Not to be a pessimist but the day they find a cure for AIDS/HIV, I won't be surprised to hear the discovery of a stronger strain of virus.
