TWO policewomen narrowly escaped serious injury after their police vehicle caught fire yesterday morning.
Although not seriously injured, the police women, out of precaution, sought treatment at the San Fernando General Hospital.
Police sources say the car was at the Vehicle Maintenance Company of Trinidad and Tobago (VMCOTT) for two weeks and was cleared for use only last week.
The incident has triggered calls from the Police Social and Welfare Association for the proper maintenance of vehicles used by officers.
According to police reports, the incident occurred at about 11 am while PC Bobcombe Alleyne and Cpl Carlene Mohan were on mobile patrol in a marked Ford Focus police car, PBT 1528, in San Fernando. Alleyne was the driver.
Smoke began to billow from under the bonnet of the car as the officers approached Circular Road, in the vicinity of the Olera Heights Apartments. The policewomen immediately stopped and got out of the car which moments later burst into flames.
The shocked officers comforted each other after the incident.
An eyewitness said he was inside his house on Circular Road when he smelt smoke. “I honestly thought that the neighbour was burning some stuff. But then I started to see thick black smoke in the air. I ran outside right away,” he said.
The eyewitness said he looked over his wall and saw a police car on fire. “There was smoke and fire in the car,” he said.
He said at the time he saw the vehicle, it was unoccupied. “I thought about getting an extinguisher but then I decided to dial 991 while another neighbour called the Fire Service,” he said.
Firefighters from the Mon Repos Fire Station arrived and extinguished the fire.
An electrical problem is believed to have caused the fire, but this is still to be determined, Sgt Nanan of the Mon Repos Police Station said yesterday. The car was impounded at the Mon Repos station.
Head of the Police Social and Welfare Association Sgt Anand Ramesar told Newsday the incident highlighted the need for proper maintenance and inspection of police vehicles. He called for an audit of all police vehicles and motorcycles. He claimed there were many instances in which police vehicles were in violation of regulations and called on Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs to put a stop to this practice.
