Wonder if it was an inexperienced pilot who was not accustomed to the shorter runway in Guyana. A small miscalculation on his part that turned out to be disastrous.

Even under normal landing, this pilot made it to the end of the runway.

What I've wondered is why the pilots touch down so long after the start of the runway? Especially on a shorter runway like that.

This one win:

One woman quoted by Guyana's Kaieteur News service described hearing a loud sound when the plane landed, and everyone began screaming.

"It was terror," she said. "I was praying to Jesus."

Her husband opened the emergency door and passengers began escaping, the woman said.

Rescuers struggled in the dark to free other passengers from the wreckage.

One woman described how a taxi driver got to the scene before the emergency services and charged her to be driven back to the terminal.

I hope it was not the BRAND NEW plane.

Thank God no lives were lost.

I think an American Airlines jet did the same recently in Jamaica.

YES. There have been many minor scrapes including one recently where an engine blew out on a 737 but nothing this serious in the 60+ years of BWIA / CAL.

Statistically, it was only a matter of time.

Again, God is a ...

Well it would be level pressure now for CAL from FAA, CAA and all the other bodies that have to investigate.

Hmmmm, starts to wonder about this George Nicholas III issue .... and decisions allegedly being made by the Chairman alone ... etc, etc ...

Vortex from the edges of the wings. This was a recent addition to the fleet, next to 9Y-SXM. Lots of bamsees quaking over in CAL now!

years ago a bwia ran off miami airport
came in too fast and ego usually takes the better of pilots who feel shame to go around
when there are 10's of planes lined up in the sky waiting/watching

TTPP (us) : 10,500ft
SYCJ (them) :7,448ft

These aircraft capable of stopping even in 3000ft of runway. But "it is alleged" that the pilot is squarely to blame. With a full load of passengers anything after 1000ft from the threshold is a rejected take off, if he thought he could have stopped he was certainly wrong.

*PS*
Notice the difference in the AA crash and the BW crash, the BW crash not "dirty" ie the flaps and slats are retracted. Could this pilot have retracted them as he rejected the take off? (a no no)
