for a newcomer i suggest a fish with live rock, going reef off the bat may be a bit much.

So my betta's stomach is swollen. He is having problems swimming so he just sits around his tank. Should I euthanise him?

an 8ft tank should never be made out of 3/8" glass. Thats way too thin for an 8ft, my 5ft tank is made with 3/8" glass. Yr tank should AT LEAST be made with 1/2" glass.

So to answer yr question i wouldnt pay for it at all.

Yes I think I'll have to do that. He was eating as he usually would but then this swelling started and it hasn't gone down. sigh....

I also have an albino Cichlid that recently shows signs of fin rot...his tail fin has a red spot and one of his pectoral fins is slightly damaged and red.
What kind of medication should I try on him?

1-hospital tank,
2-hit him salt & observe / wait for red to subside.
3-After two or three days, change water, hit salt again then m/blue & two more days
4- repeat 3 & go a week
5- now that two weeks hve passed, replace in original tank which has been sterilised , refilled , salted & reconditioned awaiting it's occupant all this time

Thanks link but one question, if I don't have another tank, can't I still administer the salt and m/blue to him?
I already started adding salt and he's eating and moving around. His fins are opening out now, before he had them flat to his body and stayed at the top of the tank.

Should I remove the filter cartridge when I add the m/blue?

^If the cartridge contains activated carbon then yes you should remove it before adding any medication.

all of the above......
throw him in a bucket.....
-eliminate all that contaminated water in the tank..that's now into step 3...
-use tap water to refill & afterward, neutralise the chlorine with sodium thiosulphate, then add yr salt. -Let the fish settle down & next day...hit 'im with m/blue...
after that, yr cool...fish already responding to salt only...do the full regimen..
