A KNOWN bandit burned to death yesterday morning while struggling to get out of a stolen car that he had moments earlier crashed into a concrete pillar as he was driving east along the Eastern Main Road, Laventille.
Two female passengers were treated for minor cuts after being taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital by employees of Global Medical Response (the company responsible for the ambulance service). The accident occurred opposite their headquarters near the Port of Spain market.
The man, Nathaniel Edwards, 28, was originally from Bournes Road, St James and according to a police detective on the scene yesterday, "he started his bandit career in 1995".
The Express spoke to a woman who said that around 10 a.m. she heard when Edwards' Nissan B-13 car slammed into one of the pillars that support the flyover that veers off the Beetham Highway and leads into Port of Spain.
"I heard the impact and when I came out, I see two girls trying to pull him out but like his foot got stuck. I end up running in the back to tell people about the accident and by the time they came out with fire extinguishers and they were half way across the road heading to the car it explode", she said.
The two women had to run from the car to escape being killed themselves, the woman explained.
Edwards remained conscious as the car burned, with his body hanging halfway out, she added.
He died on the scene despite the best efforts of the ambulance personnel to save him.
Police said Edwards, also known by the names "Grafton", and "Gold Teeth", had left a pool party in Leau Place, Laventille that morning.
Police speculate that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel when he crashed.
Several motorists heading into Port of Spain stopped to take in the gruesome scene.
Some took photos with their camera phones while others stopped on top the flyover and looked over at the body.
Fire officers from the Wrightson Road headquarters eventually doused the burning car and its trapped occupant following which both were moved from the area around noon.
A detective who knew Edwards, "real, real good", said Edwards was released from prison in April this year after being arrested for robbery with aggravation in 2010.
"He had a string of other offences too", said the police corporal, "robbery, shooting, shooting with intent to endanger life and possession of guns and ammunition".
"We tired lock he up," said the corporal.
A woman listening to the conversation nearby said, "The poor man already dead. Why allyuh saying bad things about him".
"He woulda rob you too granny", said the corporal.
Besson Street Police are continuing investigations.
