Unipet experience, choose customer service or double filter?

This is a complaint that I sent to Consumer Affairs and Unipet Management. Will let you all know if anything ever comes out of this

To whom it may concern;
I will like to inform you of an incident that occurred at the Unipet 360 at St Augustine. I approached the prepaid-cashier and asked for $100 diesel at pump #6. I then proceeded to pump# 6 where I was parked and began to fill. While filling I realized that that the amount taken had surpassed the estimated amount. I immediately stopped filling only to realize that the gasoline was being filled. I investigated only to find a small sign with the word ‘Super’ being hidden by a sheet of paper (8 ½ x 11 page). This sheet of paper indicated to users that the card payment system was not working. There and then I found out that at that filling station had both diesel and super gasoline.

I called Unipet customer service at 6746405 & 6385703 until I spoke to one Mr Serrete who said that he will investigate. He called back saying that the word ‘Super’ could have been seen clearly and not covered by the sign as I had indicated. Ultimately he said it was my responsibility for what had happened.

I returned inside the station immediately after the phone call only to find out that the signed had been raised by a female service attendant who hurried left with a black-hand bag at approximately 2pm thanking god that her shift had ended. I informed Mr Serrette that the station misled the public by hiding the gasoline sign and he should look at the video footage to see if the sign had been raised as I had claimed. He did not provide any resolution to the problem and insisted that it was my fault.

$200 was paid to the mechanic, $47.41 on gasoline (date 9/6/11, station #AB123, transaction #28783, casher #12, time 13:52:19) and $122 diesel to refill.

Your service stations are not only patronized by customers requesting the double filtering of fuel but also by those requiring high levels of customer service. In this regard, I am kindly asking that this matter be investigated and a resolution be found at least for compensation on all the fuel purchased. Also even more importantly that precaution be taken to prevent further occurrences such as separate pumping stations for each fuel and for the cashier to only authorize fuels that was requested during payment.

I filled up there more than once and there is only one diesel pump as you enter stating diesel and all the rest stating super or premium....

To be honest, I don't think that Unipet holds themselves to any higher standard of customer service than an NP gas station does..

Its all down to the manager/owner of the individual station..
eg. nearly every non quik-shoppe station in San Fernando has good service and they are almost all NP.. Particular props goes out to Boodoosingh and Rahamut by the Cross..

I do agree however with what your saying.. They market themselves as giving better service but won't deliver it. I always make a point of making sure its diesel I'm getting though.. A few years ago before NP split diesel and gas pumps, they filled up my L200 with gas.. Thankfully the manager of the gas station called a mechanic and got him to sort it out.. ie. drain the tank, bleed through diesel etc..

It's trinidad. This happens at almost every single small business, operated by your every-day garden variety hustler.

Doesn't take much for someone or a company to say "The best ______" and get a nice big shiny sign.
Look at the lower-level gunta's that they hire, typically with very limited education and common sense.


Sorry to hear about your plight man, I sympathize with you and I know that if this was the US, UK or Canada, things would definitely be different. Down here it's a selfish world and almost no one is out to help a fellow person, even if the mistake is genuine.

I know both shift managers at that unipet in st augustine well. So that's part of the reason I only ever fill up there as I know nothing stupid goes on behind the scene.

The general staff are stupid and ignorant, I've told the managers this a few times, but it's really not all up to them.

I have seen the sign you are talking about a few times, but it's been in the middle of the pump. It is ridiculous IMO to have super and diesel available on both side of the same pump. The handles are red and grey so that's what I always check for in my mind.

Consumer affairs has been doing an 'ok' job these days, so if indeed the station video shows the sign blocking the word 'SUPER' you might have a good case.

I didnt include the part where a young tout in Unipet uniform came to pester me to hurry up and to clean up. He claimed he was on in instructions of Mr Issac (i hope i heard the name right), the manager who refused to meet with me.

From the responses so far it seems to me alot of people uses this particular station. Next time you go to fill up diesel imagine the 3 x 6 inches sign ith the word 'super' being covered. do you think you would have made the same mistake??

the colour code for diesel is the same shade of green as the colour code for unipet and such is the most dominant colour on all filling pumps whether gas or diesel

Look at slide show until the photo with the '360' sign, there is where I filled up. On the left of the photo, the 1st pump (pump #5) is the one that I filled up but on the other side. However the photo shows exactly what I saw on the other side (pump# 6).

Notice to the left of the 1st pump you see the a small red sign app. 3 x 6 inches with the word 'super'. It right above where the hose spout sits on the pump

Are there any signs to say that the customer is responsible for the contents going into the tank?

Sorry to say this but:
If one of the attendants is NOT filling up for you then you have accepted the responsibility for whatever fuel goes into your tank.

It is not the fault of Unipet or anyone else, regardless of paper signs, or stickers covering pumps.

besides... the gas nozzle is red and the diesel nozzle is grey... how can you mix those up reguardless of a sign blocking it...
i fill @ that station all the time and never had problems... only somtimes ppl does park like rell kants there...

i am very paranoid about where i fill diesel, cause bad fuel can cause alot of probs...
i have used that 360 station and found the quality good, but on my first purchase there i realized the scenario with the super in the same pump, they wrong to have the sign covered, i hope u took pics before they removed the sign, give them ah good lawsuit in the skunt, next time watch how u fulling up nah, if diesel get into a gasoline engine not much damage will be done, but gas in a diesel engine could destroy it in no time at all.......

I not saying what they do is crap, but legally you might not have much recourse because of the fact that you opted to deliver the fuel yourself and not have an attendant do it.

Thus why Peake's have self service and full service I imagine. Up to week before I see a guy put gas in he Sportero...

while the responses of teh previous posters are all valid,

you may still have a chance

if they had you pump the fuel yourself then it is their responsibility to ensure that all of their facilities are properly self-service and well labelled such taht you could have doen so

if teh sign was small and covered then you may have been acting innocently and as a result of their improper facilities incurred a repair bill

just saying . . . a lot of the newer stations are moving towards teh self service approach where they do NOT have anyone pumping the fuel at select pumps and as such need to ensure that their facilities allow for customers to be able to serve themselves properly, if they don't, then they would be facing a lot more issues like this

poor service happens in NP stations as well . . . just last night i went to full diesel in south and the trigger on teh nozzle was already set, so when the cashier activated the pump before I put the nozzle in teh tank, diesel started spraying all over the truck, she got a bath in diesel. the pump attendant just shrugged it off, didn't even offer to throw some water on the truck to wash off the diesel
