We went out in the gulf last Friday, a couple miles off the Temple by the
sea in Waterloo. Did some banking and caught some redfish, yellow crocro,
iron head crocro, salmon & bachine, also beat quit a few snake but did end
up filling a normal size cooler though.

You should try by the old rig out there

We wanted to go down to there but the weather wasn't
ideal and we had 2 females on the boat with us. If it
was up to me, we'd be off Patos banking.

Also there's some really big tarpon biting close to
the temple at night. We saw some guys going to
fish when we we're returning and then saw them
Saturday morning with one about 120 lbs.

Those trawlers are a real pain, there was one following us around and always dragging their nets close to us. That's the reason I hate to fish shallow in the gulf.

^generally just start sticking on expansion/collapse...remember to rinse it in some fresh water after fishing and wd40 your reel every so often...

i have an old telescopic, okuma, that does the sticking thing.... have no idea when it started.

personally....something light, medium action, portable and sturdy?
i got a shimano rod/reel combo for $415.00 at Tackle Shop...Shimano Solara 6.5' 2-piece rod, FX400-FB reel...rated for up to 12lb test line. works flawlessly, caught alot of fish so far on it and it handles heavier dudes easily.

i have this one in the trunk almost always...

after facking up a few rod n reels due to bad maintenance, i have come to the conclusion that:

1. its better to wash down de rod with a lil soapy water....helps remove all the salt from the metal bits and prevent it from rusting

2. do not use wd 40 on yuh reel since it strips away any grease that would have been on it from the manufacturer....better to rinse well wid fresh water and den drop a lil oil on the moving parts like yuh bail, gears etc.....i got some shimano oil with a coupla reels buh i guess normal machine oil would work also. additionally i have had to open up a couple reel housings and wash away salt deposits...after cleaning then i reapply reel grease.....got that both at mankees and tackle shop for small money.

even "waterproof" reels need occasional maintenance....check youtube for some basic vids on how yuh open up yuh reel and do a basic service.

^not thick and not huge...patience will pay off i guess.

got some 5-10lbers recently off the north..the 'carangras' jacks were way more fun to fight on light tackle.

smaller live bait seems to be the ticket..try and get some, you'll end up cutting up bigger ones and banking.

For you guys that want to go fishing but have no boat... I know someone that does trips, different prices depending on the distance you want to go. He has an open Pirogue, nothing fancy so his prices are reasonable.

PM me for more details.
