The Quest for a Great System

Hi All,

I was driving home last night listening to some old Pop and realised that it's about time I got myself some REAL comps. The entry level stuff that I have isn't really doing it for me anymore. I currently have a pair of Powerbass S-6c. Now don't get me wrong, these sound amazing for the price, but I just want more.

I ran a search for "comps" and "components" and other things but only coming up with limited info.

What I'm looking for is defined upfront bass, high quality mid range and smooth highs. That said, I'd much prefer silk dome tweeters than anything else. It must be able to get loud when I hear my favorites come up. Let me clarify, loud does not mean park up by the doubles man and blast for the neighbourhood, but I want to crank it up sometimes. I also appreciate notes down to 60 even 50 Hz if possible as I'm planning to use this without a sub most of the time.

My doors are already deadened. Comps must be 6.5". I have 100rms @ 4 ohm or 200 @ 2 available.
It'd be nice to use all 200

There is no budget limit as I don't care what it costs.

hybrid audio and morel are the 2 brands readily available with great customer support that can take that 200watts

dls and morels you would get really nice highs from their tweeters from any1 of their lines
between those 3 brands you can pick 1 an not be disappointed
at that point it would just be a matter of preference and actual budget of how much you would ideally like to spend

i use morel so im biased as i have personally used and using the elate and tempo lines

i like all 3 brands and thats y i said u cant go wrong.. but if silky smooth easy on the ears high is what your looking for.. morel or dls
those elates do like power though and thats when it really shine

but you must have a budget in mind..

for prices you would have to contact each dealer separately or just attend a sq meet
but ive said before the prices you get from edhardy for morel you cant really get cheaper this side of the atlantic

you only have 2 channels of power to dedicate to the front? If u got more, its a whole new ballgame. As far as what i heard for myself the DLS RS6A is one of the hardest sets to beat in its price range

There are more cost effective options suggested like the Hybrid, DLS, and Morel. (I've heard many cars with these brands, and with proper installation they all sound really good.) I would also suggest that you try to source something locally so that you can get support from the dealer when things aren't going as you planned.

also, the morel tempo set. around the same price range, can get pretty loud, smooth & be crossed pretty low.

power handling might decrease with crossing lower than recommended but it will take it for your no sub application. heck, I even run my comps full range once to see what will happen (will post the vid wen I get a chance).

I've always wanted to hear a set of Morels. Had a chance with SS_626 but the car show was getting too loud. I ran a search in car audio classifieds and didn't see any sales ads.

I can get more, but I just want a 2 way. It's not about full SQ... just upfront bass... high quality mids and smooth highs. Don't really care for the imaging, staging, tonal accuracy etc. as I'm not planning to go up for competition.

Something about the no. 7 i don't like. Maybe the 55Hz freq response. I like how the DLS Gothia is 30 - 25KHz...

And I'm serious when I say no budget. I know what I'm looking for... don't really care for the cost.

Dan, IMHO you don't need to break the bank on super high end components to get what you looking for.
The easiest route may be to go active with a set of decent components, sub and some DSP tool. You would be amazed at what proper processing can do to some average speakers.

Also asking anything <60 hz even <70 hertz with meaningful output from 6.5 midwoofers is quite a task. This is not to say you can't have upfront bass. Just have to properly equalize between your sub and midbass.

Finally my suggestion for highend comps is JBL660GTi. JBL 608GTi if on a budget

Going active will have benefits even if u not going for staging. Look at the price of these drivers.

two tweets and two mids should set u back about roughly 1500. Brian Steele could chime in on what he thinks about those Silver Flute drivers as I believe he is using or has used those.

Use some of that money for processing, installation and installation materials.
The experienced heads will be able to advise you best.
You should attend an ICE club test and tune or an IASCA Sound Q competition and listen to some cars. Note the cars that you prefer and also those which are similarly shaped to your car, and model your system similarly.

also thes speakers can be bi amped as the xovers are separate for the tweets and mid bass allowing you to run specific amp channel per driver and more power to the mid bass than the tweet

Come to one of the test and tunes or SQ competition. You can also arrange to have a demo of some of the system belonging to various forum users, ice club members and you judge if any of them sound like what you are looking for, or aiming to attain. Get info on what treatment they used, cross over points and slope if active etc. If running passive well its Manfu dependant. Ask about the small tricks or tips on achieving that results.

Remember the most expensive components does not mean it will sound best. You should know that. The cheapest components have the ability to sound great. You have an idea about what you expect from a sound system, so IMO just throwing out names of components brands etc will do nothing to tell you what potential they have. You listening to them installed and learning what is needed to be done to have it sound like that is more valuable.

Couple years ago SR used a set of components in a Van which was not designed for sound quality but it still placed first in an open class (please no one brag about this again). Why did it win? I would say its what the installer did which made the difference than the type of components used. Well SR doing the install, what you expect... right!

Q - before you commit an open budget, demo cars. Talk to the owners. Get the info on what worked and also what did not as no car is the same. You would not believe the + difference a little plastacine on a properly dynamat door made to my system. As for info, we all start from somewhere and we all needed info tips and tricks. Those who choose not to share is selfish. I do not know all there is to know, but I can show you what worked for me and what did not if you want a demo.

the van had zero sound damping but all speakers were properly installed in the stock oem locations

somtimes when trying to go with a complex install you end up not getting it rite then blame eveything and eveyone else (especially if in competition)
recomend auditioning different speakers and if possible different systems setup then make a decision

Brian Steele could chime in on what he thinks about those Silver Flute drivers as I believe he is using or has used those.

I'm still using them and still quite happy with them. Along with the Seas fabric-dome neo tweeters. Very smooth sound. I'm using passive filtering for my front stage though. Madisound designed an x-over for me for an extra $25.

I'm getting the upgrade itch though, and those B&C 6.5" neo drivers are catching my eye...

Q, Attend the next IASCA SQ event. With the owner's permission, you'll get to hear what their competition setup sounds like. My advice is listen to the vehicles first, then find out what they have, so you'll go into it with an open mind. Another thing to note is that their competition EQ settings (and possibly xover settings) may not be the same as their daily driver settings.

The point of my first post is that you must have a budget in mind, and not just for the comps, but for the entire system. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Guys, I appreciate all of your wisdom and everything. As GVTrini said... I know the 80/20 rule. I don't want an active setup... I just want to upgrade the components. I never said that I wanted to get a complexed setup. I know I'll have to upgrade my amp as well. Just wanted to get an idea of some great speakers.

So far I'm most impressed by the Morel Supremo 6
