Google reacts to Japanese tsunami with a Person Finder tool

Image

Now this is the sort of activity you'd expect from a true search giant. Instead of sitting on its hands during the tsunami that has stricken Japan today, Google has put together a Person Finder tool where people worried about the plight of their loved ones can look them up by name. There are only a few thousand records up on the site at the moment, but it should still be a useful repository for missing person data, particularly since mobile networks were taken down by the tsunami's damage earlier this morning. Information should also start piling up as recovery efforts continue. Let's just hope this Person Finder won't have to be used for too long and things can be brought back to normal soon.

long story short. I rooted it. So no warranty
Im not sure when the screen started giving trouble. I had installed a matte screen protector and it seriously darkened the screen. So I did not notice that there were dark and light spots on the screen until I got sick of the screen protector and removed it.
Decided to try pulling the battery.. then It refused to boot

Well I use wavesecure, since McAfee took over the app is gone to shyt, use to sent a text to your phone and will always give u an approximate good result as to the location, now it tries to use only GPS and if you are in a building, it will probable tell u your phone is on the I35

Tried using lookout and i think that app needs a continuous data connection in order to locate your phone properly and to use the scream feature

i didnt have data on my phone last week and the website couldnt connect to my phone to use the features

And my GPS is always on and my battery lasts a day easily, it only really drains when its actually active, and it still lasts

not sure about mobile defence, but wavesecure would lock the phone if the sim card is changed as well as report the number of the new sim

problem solved
I left it alone for awhile, and the phone booted
albeit with a large dark stain that took up about half the screen
over the weekend the stain seemed to just ...go away. its down to a tiny spot and the screen is almost perfect again

@jhonnieblue what rom are u using and what version of android, 2.3.3 has a built in graph that can show u what is eating your battery, there is also a menu that allows u to see what is using your battery, type *#*#4636#*#* into the phone keyboard as if u are dialing a number, go into the battery history option and check the info

EDIT: pay attention to the percetage your phone is "running" and pay special attention to you "Partial Wake Usage"

Twelve Minute Video Demo of Galaxy Tab 10.1 Shows a Sleek, Powerful Tablet
Image
The chaps at AndroidHD were able to score some time with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy 10.1 tablet where, thankfully, they recorded the experience for the rest of us. In fact, they did one better, turning their day with the tablet into a twelve minute video showcasing all the features of the device. Set to music, we get to see all the various ways in which the unit comes in handy. In case you didn't know why you need a tablet.

We're really excited to see the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and whatever else might be up Samsung's sleeves. As much as enjoyed the original Tab, it felt like a large smart phone experience. Android 3.0 looks to make things much better, taking advantage of the dual-core processor, 8-megapixel camera, and more.

Any of you guys or gals looking to pick one of these up when it becomes available on your favorite carrier?

This is looking good, and I'm not a Tablet guy

yup

root it
install a custom ROM - Guide can be found here.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?t ... Root_Guide
Or check out XDA..real good resource.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=754
I use Android revolution HD
Go to Accounts/Sync in settings, disable what you dont use regularly. turn down the amount of auto sycning
Once done, Install Titanium Backup
uninstall :
peep
friendstream
and any other apps that you dont use.
I removed news, stocks, and some other crapware.

Another option is to go with the cyanogenmod ROM
Or to go with
Revolution HD without sense

I get about 2 Days of medium use on my phone.
With original HTC Rom, I used to average almost 1 day.

But it is also said that the Battery life increases after the first two weeks ownership of the DHD

if you root, your phone's warranty is voided of course

try tuning your settings for android mail and facebook, partial wake is when the screen is off but the CPU is still at full speed or close to full speed because of apps doing stuff when your phone is supposed to be sleeping i.e mail and facebook in your case

Also 51% running seems like alot, it means the phone is basically working half the time, so if u have it unplugged for 10 hours, your phone is basically running for 5 of those hours, thats a lot taking into consideration facebook and mail is constantly updating when your screen is off

Google’s Latest Acquisition Will Make YouTube Better

Google now owns a small Irish company called Green Parrot Pictures. Why should you care? Their video compression technology will allow for better looking, less stuttery video, packaged in smaller file sizes on YouTube. Win win.

Infamous Android Hacker Koush Turns Down Interview with Sony ‘Out of Principle’
In an effort to strengthen their development team it seems Sony has been scouring the interwebz for talented developers and in at least once case offered a meeting to infamous Android hacker Koush. Without much hesitation, Koush declined any request for an interview. He says he turned down the offer “out of principle.” More exactly, he turned down the offer due to “Sony’s recent treatment of fellow hacker George Hotz.” That’s the even more infamous Geohot of iPhone jailbreaking and Sony lawsuit fame who recently voiced interest in Android, himself, if only as a means to exact revenge on Sony through the hacking of the upcoming Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.

Now that, boys and girls, is what we call solidarity.

45,000 Browser Tests Say Android Browser More Than 50% Faster Than iOS’s Safari
Not that we didn’t already know it, but Ottawa-bred Blaze Software has issued a press release revealing results of extensive browser tests they carried out on Safari for iOS and Android’s stock browser. (To be specific, the latest Android handsets running 2.2 and 2.3 were used on our side, while iOS tests were carried out on iPhone 4 handsets running 4.2 and 4.3.)
Image
1,000 different websites were tested with several tests, totaling 45,000 separate tests – I’d say that makes for some pretty accurate results when all is said and done. As for those results, Android proved to load pages 52% faster than iOS on average. Again, not really surprising as we know the folks at Google are always aiming toward improving the performance of their stock browser. We first saw Android run circles around iOS in a series of tech demos at Google I/O last year.

Blaze’s CTO Guy Podjarnyin was surprised, though. "We were very surprised by the results", said Guy Podjarny, Blaze CTO and Co-Founder. "We assumed that it would be [a] closer race and that the latest JavaScript speed improvements would have a more material impact on performance. The fact that Android beat iPhone by such a large margin was not expected".

It’s something we’ve known for a long time, Guy, but now you know. Better late than never, right? Read on for full press details.
iPhone vs. Android - 45,000 Tests Prove Whose Browser is Faster

Ottawa, ON, March 17, 2011 - Blaze Software Inc released today the largest ever research study of smart phone browser performance. The purpose of the study was to determine once and for all which of the two leading smart phone vendors has the fastest browser.

Mobile Web browser usage is exploding. Emarketer estimates that 44.1% of US citizens will leverage mobile Internet by 2014. To capture market interest in mobile browsing, smart phone vendors have been aggressively touting the speed improvements in their products. However, due to the lack of mobile measurement tools, it has been difficult to measure which smart phone actually has the faster browser.

After taking over 45,000 measurements on the latest iPhone and Android devices, the study found that Android was 52% faster than iPhone on average. Android finished loading a Web page faster on 84% of the 1000 Websites tested. The study also found that the despite significant JavaScript performance gains in the latest Apple iOS 4.3 release and Google Android 2.3 releases, these improvement made no measurable improvement on the actual page load times of the sites tested.

"We were very surprised by the results", said Guy Podjarny, Blaze CTO and Co-Founder. "We assumed that it would be closer race and that the latest JavaScript speed improvements would have a more material impact on performance. The fact that Android beat iPhone by such a large margin was not expected".

What makes this study unique is the size of the study and the fact that it used real phones on real world websites to make the measurements. Past studies have often used fabricated benchmark sites or manual measurements on a small number of sites. This study was made possible through custom apps developed to measure page load time on mobile devices. These apps run on the actual devices, load a page on demand, and measure how long it took. These agents are available as a free service to measure any site with the Blaze Mobitest Tool.

Detailed blog post on the Blaze Mobile Measurement Study
For more information on the details results and methodology of the study, please see: www.blaze.io/blog

Motorola Xoom WiFi now available for pre-order

Image

Motorola didn't say when pre-orders for the WiFi-only Xoom would be available when it finally announced the device yesterday, but some retailers have now stepped in and answered that question. You can currently pre-order the device from Amazon, Staples and Costco, with other participating retailers presumably set to follow shortly. In case you missed the news, the Xoom WiFi will run you $599 for the one and only 32GB version, and it will be available on March 27th. Staples will apparently be shipping them out on March 25th to ensure you get it on launch day (if you pre-order before March 23rd), while Costco says it will only begin shipping on April 1st -- it's throwing in a free gel case to make up for it, though.

Android Gets That Flash 10.2 Goodness

As of today, Android users can now take advantage of Flash 10.2 beta on their Froyo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb devices. Honeycomb users are getting a beta release, though, so full hardware acceleration is turned off until more development is done. But for all of you who went out and got the Xoom, you can watch clips inside and outside the browser in 480p right now. Support for 720p is still on the way.
