Nexus One Gingerbread Update Causing Google Voice Headache for Some
Image
While it is a joyous occasion, the Nexus One update to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread is not without its faults. Some users are reporting that after updating, Google Voice is broken. A few industrious souls have found a way to correct the problem easily enough, even if it is a bit more hassle then if, well, the update hadn’t broken GV in the first place.

If the problem is affecting you, simply uninstall Google Voice, locate, download, and install and older version of the APK, and then upgrade to the newest version via the Android Market per usual. Or sit around and wait for Google to issue a fix. What ever floats your boat.

Multiple Sources Indicate BlackBerry Messenger Coming to Android
Image
Ask your BlackBerry friends why they haven't switched to Android yet and you'll likely hear that they love Messenger and the cool features that come with the IM client. The ability to chat between other BlackBerry users, share pictures, and videos is one of the main reasons a non-business user holds on to their RIM device. Well, if the multiple trusted BGR sources are right, that may not even be an issue to worry about before too long. According to these insiders, Research in Motion is working to bring BlackBerry Messenger to Android and other platforms.

Without providing details such as price or estimated availability, BGR does indicate this may be a stripped down version of the client which only allows for chatting. The video, location, and photos stuff might stay as an exclusive set of features for BlackBerry handsets. You know, so there's a reason to stay.

Why the desire to free up their software? BGR's Geller surmises it might be to own the increasingly crowded space that is cross-platform IM services. This is definitely an interesting concept and one that will be fun to see play out. Are any of AndroidGuys readers using a BlackBerry and the Messenger service? Perhaps you stayed behind for a long time just because of the app. Tell us your story!

LiveProfile aims to be fastest messaging app for Android, BlackBerry, and iOS

The “BBM for Android” market is a crowded space. PingChat was among the first to replicate RIM’s popular app, Kik rose and fell in a tech blink, and Beluga achieved massive support for its pod-based group sharing and chat platform before Facebook gobbled it up. Is there room for one more contestant?

ImagePhil Karl seems to think so. He’s the man behind LiveProfile, an Android and iPhone app that enables real-time messaging across platforms. LiveProfile keeps friends in-touch without having to pay SMS rates or wait on the time it takes for messages to be delivered. That, along with the ability to post updates and share files, has helped the service attract roughly 25,000 users to join each day.

Androinica.com had a chance to speak with Karl about LiveProfile. He revealed that the impending launch on BlackBerry, and an ambitious roadmap set to deliver plenty of new features, could make LiveProfile a more popular option for people seeking real-time messaging between Android, BlackBerry, and iOS.

ASUS Wants Android for Netbooks, 3D Displays and Quad-Core CPUs for Future Tablets
Image
ASUS is still searching for their breakout Android product that will propel their brand to the same status as the likes of Motorola and Samsung, but the company is committed to the platform, and not just for tablets, according to CEO Jerry Shen. Shen says netbooks from the company will soon see Android (with some MeeGo options as well).

But in the world of tablets the ASUS is only looking forward, with Shen talking up 3D displays and quad-core processors as just a couple of the advancements the company will look into to help it gain its place as the number two tablet manufacturer in the world, a goal the company hopes to achieve by next year.

We have been impressed with ASUS’s innovation with their tablet form factors, but the actual implementation of Android and device build quality has left us a bit wanting. Hopefully these early attempts give way to some some more successful devices in the future.

ComScore: Android leapfrogs BlackBerry among US smartphone subscribers to take first place in market share

Image

Last time we checked in with ComScore's report on smartphone platform market share among US subscribers three months ago, Android was doing a little happy dance as it overtook iOS for the number two spot overall. Well, the cuddly green bots have self-replicated yet again, enough to overtake RIM this time thanks in part to a 5.4 percent decline on BlackBerry's part (down to 30.4 percent in January) coupled with a 7.7 percent boost on the Android side, moving up to 31.2 percent. We imagine ComScore's next report -- covering the period through March -- will see a little boost on the iOS side thanks to Verizon's iPhone launch, but RIM's knight in shining armor might be further out; we still don't know when QNX-based phones are going to happen, after all, and devices like the Monaco don't really seem like cure-alls.

To the Android gurus here ... I'm considering getting one soon. Wanted to know a few things though.

Does it have an email application? I receive a lot of work emails.

How is the battery life?

And which is the better bet ... HTC Desire or HTC Desire HD ?

With a $1B Down Payment from Microsoft, Android Never Had a Chance with Nokia
Image
When Nokia chose Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 as the platform for their smartphones moving forward, many cringed and wondered why the company wouldn’t go with Android, an operating system that has proven its worth in the market. Aside from CEO Stephen Elop’s claim that he did not want Nokia’s new handsets to get lost on shelves already featuring so many Android devices, a new report is suggesting Microsoft slipped the mobile manufacturer $1 billion to sweeten the pot.

The $1 billion is part of a 5-year deal with MS, insuring their operating system is the first choice for Nokia for the foreseeable future. Consumers and ranting bloggers aren’t the only ones a bit thrown off by Nokia’s choice, either. As reported yesterday, Intel’s CEO expressed that he felt Android was the better choice.

With this new information, it seems unlikely Nokia might change their tune any time soon. We best move along and not think of the partnership that could have been.
