Vicky Boodram reported being robbed

Wednesday, February 2 2011

President and founder of Boodram’s Travel & Ship Ahoy Cruises Agency, Vicky Boodram, was reportedly held captive by an armed customer who demanded that she refund his monies for two cruises which had been cancelled earlier in the year.

In a telephone interview yesterday, Boodram said the incident had occurred at approximately 6.30 pm.

“It was scary, but realistic as well. However, I want to re-emphasise that all those passengers who had booked to travel would be given a full refund by February 24,” she said.

Boodram also stated that between 65 to 75 percent of all passengers had already been granted their refunds, and only a small amount of customers were yet to receive their refunds.

Boodram added that she reported the incident to the San Fernando CID.

However, officers at the San Fernando CID were unable to confirm the incident.

On Monday, dozens of irate would-be cruise line passengers descended on the South Trinidad based travel agency in an effort to retrieve monies for two mid-year cruises which were both cancelled in mid-January.

The cruises, which were organized by Boodram’s Travel & Ship Ahoy Cruises agency offices, corner Dumfries Road and Arjoonsingh Drive, La Romaine, had been advertised as a Caribbean cruise for April 8 - 15 and August 22 to August 28 aboard the Carnival Cruise lines with stops at several Caribbean islands, including Aruba, Curacao, Dominica, British Virgin Islands, and Antigua.

Passengers had a choice of suites and price ranges ranging between $4,500 to $6,000.

Cruise boss held up by irate ‘passenger’

President of Boodram’s Travel and Ship-Ahoy cruises, Vicky Boodram, was forced to evacuate her office and seek police protection yesterday after an irate passenger allegedly held her hostage at gunpoint, demanding a cash refund for a cancelled ocean cruise. Boodram, who established Ship-Ahoy cruises last year, has found herself in difficulties after two highly publicised Carnival cruises scheduled for April and August were cancelled, leaving 4,500 passengers in a quandary.

Although Boodram has started refunding some passengers, many others have continued congregating at her offices on Dumfries Road, La Romaine, demanding they be paid immediately. In an interview, Boodram said she was fearful for her life after being held at gunpoint. She said on Monday around 6 pm, she was inside her office when a man walked in with a gun and pointed it at her. She added: “I told him if he shoots me or kills me, nobody will get their money. I do not plan to rob anybody of their money. I will pay back every cent.”

She explained that security officers already had left the compound when the gunman walked in. After making some calls, Boodram said she was able to pay the man who eventually left. A notice on the office read that all customers who had queries or needed information were free to call 757-5013 or 752-8014.Meanwhile, several passengers who lingered at the office threatened to find Boodram in her home if they did not get their money back.

One passenger said: “The authorities have to make sure that this woman does not leave the country. Her father has a travel agency so the Fraud Squad must make checks to ensure she does not leave.” Boodram said receipts were given to everyone who received cheques. She said despite the adversity, Ship-Ahoy cruises would weather the storm and would ensure that T&T benefitted from cruise liner tourism. She apologised for the delays in payments, saying there was a problem with the cash flow, which would soon be rectified.

I thought the cruises sounded too good to be true and was sure tempted but business purchases were more pressing. Sounds like a pretty good scam:

Advertise super cheap cruises and get 1,000 people to pay down $4,500-$6,000 each.

Deposit the accumulated $5,000,000 odd in a high interest account. Wait 6 months and then say, "oops, canceled."

Return the money and pocket the interest.

I think she vex she ain't do a Julia Pena before it hit the fan.

Carnival sues T&T’s cruises boss

World-renowned British-American cruise line Carnival Corporation, has filed a lawsuit against president of Boodram’s Travel and Ship Ahoy cruises, Vicky Boodram, claiming she induced Carnival to enter into contracts using fraudulent letters of credit. In a lawsuit filed in the United States District Court in the southern division of Florida, law firm for Carnival Corporation, Rivero Mestre, accused Boodram of trademark infringement and dilution under the US Tradesmark Act, the Florida Trademark Act and fraudulent inducement under Florida Common Law. A court document, signed by attorneys Andres Rivero and Jorge Mestre, alleged that Boodram presented to Carnival two fraudulent letters of credit for two different charters, that purported to guarantee a total of US$6.4 million.

Rivero claimed Boodram induced Carnival to enter into contracts under which Carnival would allow Boodram the use of its name and its ship “Carnival Victory” for April and August 2011 cruises.
The company is now seeking that Boodram pay damages for lost profits, pre-judgement interests, legal costs, attorneys fees and other costs that the court deems fit. Carnival has also filed for a permanent injunction restraining Boodram and her agents from using Carnival’s trade name, logo, service mark and from falsely representing themselves as agents of Carnival. Boodram was not in office yesterday and she did not respond to messages.

Cruise Runs aground
Carnival fun ships sue travel agent Vicky Boodram
By Curtis Rampersad Business Editor

Story Created: Feb 2, 2011 at 11:52 PM ECT

Story Updated: Feb 2, 2011 at 11:52 PM ECT

Global cruise company Carnival Corporation has sued local travel agent Vicky Boodram-Arjoonsingh and her company, over two failed cruises planned for later this year.

Miami-based Carnival Corporation, whose cruise brands include Carnival Cruise Lines and Princess Cruises, filed documents in the Florida Southern District Court on January 24 against Boodram, her La Romaine company, Boodram's Travel and Tours, and Ship Ahoy Cruises.

Carnival claimed seven counts of fraud and breach of contract, as well as copyright infringement, against Boodram in civil court filings submitted to judge K Michael Moore and later judge Andrea Simonton, a summary of the lawsuit indicated.

The cruise line alleges that Boodram and her companies agreed to pay about $40 million in two payments of US$3 million each to secure use of Carnival vessels for two Caribbean cruises in 2011.

Documents submitted as case evidence by Carnival Corporation, allege that the local travel company forwarded a letter of credit from a branch of the Wells Fargo Bank in the United States to facilitate an initial payment of US$3 million to Carnival Corporation.

This arrangement was changed after Boodram's forwarded a letter from a local bank, which purportedly stated that fraudulent activity had taken place on Boodram's account but she was not responsible for this.

Carnival Corporation claimed that it was unable to secure payment for use of its vessels from either bank.

When it contacted the commercial banks here and in the United States, both indicated to Carnival that letters purportedly from their offices were false and fraudulent, Carnival alleges in its lawsuit.

Boodram's also continued to advertise the cruises with Carnival ships even though the foreign company was not paid, Carnival alleged as it claimed copyright infringement of its brand.

As the deal with Carnival fell apart, Boodram's started advertising a replacement cruise on another cruise line. This time, the cruise would be planned over seven days instead of five. But in court documents, Carnival said it contacted the other cruise line and was told there was no agreement with Boodram's either.

On Monday, police had to be called out to Boodram's offices after customers who paid between $4,000 and $6,000 per person for the cancelled cruise sailings demanded their money back.

Boodram-Arjoonsingh had promised over several weeks to give customers refunds.

Last month, Boodram-Arjoonsingh, who is the president and founder of Boodram's Travel, told the Express the company ceased all marketing and sales of the Carnival cruises which were scheduled to go to Grenada, St Lucia and Martinique.

"We indicated to passengers that we will be using a different cruise line but if they choose to, they can collect refunds on their tickets," Boodram said.

The cruises were initially advertised as offering free shuttle services to the ships and an all-inclusive package for meals and drinks. Calls to Boodram's cell phones for comment went unanswered last night.
