It’s not Walt Mossberg, but Ludacris told CNN that he thinks Apple’s iPad is the best invention of 2010. Ludacris also says that he is “definitely an Apple guy” as he rocks (raps?) an iPhone and iPad. His favorite iOS app is Words with Friends and the most embarrassing app he has on his phone is Bubble Wrap. He jokingly said “Ludacris likes to pop the bubble wrap on his damn iPhone or iPad!

Seems that Chamillionaire is also a techie in his own right.

In the previous post you may have read that VLC Player was removed from the App Store after an issue raised by a Nokia employee.

The good news is that it has now found a new home, at rpetri.ch/repo repository in Cydia. Simply add http://rpetri.ch/repo as a source in Cydia to download VLC for iOS for free.

You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to install it.

Anyone jailbreak 4.2.1 with redsn0w 9.7? I'm reading that there's a problem with the bluetooth. I would like to find out if anyone had done it and experiencing any problems with their bluetooth.

zcrugby using it now & it seems fine. The 1st beta was really 'ugh' but since then it is much more stable. I plan to use that to untether my 4.2.1 jailbreak.

Instead of releasing a tethered version (like Redsn0w 0.9.6) of GreenPois0n for iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak, members of Chronic Dev have decided to work on their own untethered solution for iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak, confirms Joshua Hill, one of the members of the team.

p0sixninja: A lot of people are saying another tethered jailbreak is pointless, I agree. Focusing on getting untethered before release

When asked if it is the same exploit as the one Comex has been working on, and whether or not it will require SHSH blobs for 4.2b3 like Redsn0w 0.9.7. Joshua said that they are working on their own untethered exploit, and that it will not require SHHS blobs for 4.2b3.

tahu363: @p0sixninja I assume you are talking about Greenpois0n? Are you implementing Musclenerd’s untether or do you have your own?

p0sixninja: @tahu363 we’re implementing our own

Capsfanchad: @p0sixninja I’m assuming "your own" will require 4.2b3 shsh? And thanks for your guys work!

p0sixninja: @Capsfanchad lol no

As usual, no ETA’s on release yet. It will be released when ready.

Stueps.... why they dont hold out until another fw release. There is nothing major with 4.2.1, Neither was 4.1 :|

And then on top of that... some n00bs complaining about wait time for the unlock for i4. WAW!

BTW SRASC tell zscrugby ah ask for him eh dan.

Also, dont expect a full fledged working redsn0w 0.97 for windows. Musclenerd was saying how it is terribly slow on windows.

And we not even going into if you all are beta testers. i wont ask

I'm hesitant about using redsn0w 9.7bx. (They are up to ver 6 now.) It being available only for mac isn't an issue for me, I just want to have a certain level of stability with the phone. I believe that the newer versions of redsn0w allow for an untethered jailbreak, but that's still just the beta version.

Apple has quietly dropped the price of its entry-level 8GB iPhone 3GS to $49 with a new two-year contract with AT&T, matching the new low price that last week was offered exclusively by the carrier.

The 8GB iPhone 3GS now costs $49, down from its original price of $99. The price change came quietly, without an announcement from Apple, just a few days after AT&T revealed it had reduced the price of the iPhone 3GS as well.

Last week, AT&T made it clear that the price of the iPhone 3GS sold in Apple's own channels, such as its retail and online stores, were determined by Apple itself, suggesting the $50 price cut was solely AT&T's doing. At the time, Apple's official iPhone site still offered the 8GB iPhone 3GS for $99.

The current-generation iPhone 4 models still carry the same price with a two-year AT&T contract. The 16GB model sells for $199, while the high-end 32GB model has a price of $299.

AT&T's chief rival, Verizon, is widely expected to announce on Tuesday that it will carry a CDMA version of the iPhone in just a matter of weeks. While reports have said Verizon will offer the iPhone 4, no mention has been made of the iPhone 3GS, first released in 2009. If Verizon's deal is only for the iPhone 4, the $49 iPhone 3GS could remain an AT&T exclusive.

Image

Starting with the launch of the iPhone 3GS in 2009, Apple began selling the previous year's model with a two-year AT&T contract in the U.S. for $99. While the initial $99 handset from Apple was the iPhone 3G, last year that was upgraded to the 8GB iPhone 3GS when the iPhone 4 launched.

------

The iPhone Dev-Team has updated RedSn0w to fix issues with Skype after performing the 'backup plan' untether.

The sixth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). This version fixes Skype (and as expected all along, the Skype issue turns out to be unrelated to sandbox patches). Please do not pirate the 4.2b3 IPSW! Only those enrolled in the iPhone Developer program have legitimate access to that IPSW using these links (the links won’t work unless you’re a legit developer currently logged in).

Unlike the last few betas, you can freely run beta6 over beta5 without a problem (but for testing purposes, we’d really like people to try both ways….from stock, and from already jailbroken). If all you want to do is fix Skype and you’re already untethered using beta5, just run beta6 and deselect every checkbox.

Now that the sandbox, Bluetooth, and Skype issues are fixed, our next priority is porting Monte back to 4.1. We’ll also try to make the Windows version less painfully slow.

Impatience I guess. I want to get Viber working, and it's currently not working with the firmware that I have. My wife has 4.1 installed on her 3GS and it works there. Currently on 4.0.1, so I figure that's the problem.

I think that it's the only method PC or Mac. If your'e on 4.2.1 you'll be on the latest baseband that Ultrasn0w doesn't currently work with.

Losing your valuable iPhone or iPod touch sure isn’t very fun. iGotYa is a great alternative solution to Find My iPhone in order to find out exactly who took your iPhone and where they’re located.

Basically iGotYa works with your standard native iOS passcode lock system. After setting up your information in Settings, if your passcode is being tampered with on the lockscreen, it will automatically snap a picture of the person who is trying to use or steal it and sends the picture along with the GPS location to your designated email address. Obviously, iGotYa will require Wi-Fi or 3G to send this information to you. However, in my opinion, this is way smarter than Apple’s Find My iPhone service. If you’re near a Wi-Fi connection (let’s say your school or workplace) it’ll be a lot easier to find the person associated with the crime. Not mentioning how nobody would know as the snapshot is taken silently.

Another great feature of iGotYa is the "security mode". This mode allows access to your device after 2 attempts, regardless of what they put in as the passcode. This might sound stupid, but it’s extremely brilliant in ways to keep the person who took your phone from restoring the device, while still taking pictures of them every time you’re on 3G or close to a Wi-Fi connection.

Check out the video for a hands-on demo with iGotYa.

You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch to install it.

Verizon (iPhone) Announcement (yea I know kinda doesn't matter to us so much...)

(key quotes)
Verizon CEO wrote:Okay, it looks like you're expecting a big announcement. I don't think we'll disappoint. If the press write something long enough, eventually it comes true. We're very very excited about our announcement today.

This is putting us at the hub of the wheel driving this industry. Collaboration is the key to innovation. We've worked with partners across the industry.

Today we're partnering with a giant of the industry, and that's Apple.

Our relationship with Apple has developed over the last two years. In 2008 we started talking about bringing the iPhone to a CDMA network. We spent a year testing.

Late in 2010 we started offering the iPad... today, we are extremely gratified to announce that the iPhone 4 will be available early next month.

Apple's Tim Cook wrote:I am incredibly happy to be with you all today. We've been looking forward to today for a long time. Since 2007 the iPhone has been a phenomenal success.

Tens of millions of customers have purchased the iPhone around the world. Customers have downloaded billions of apps. I am incredibly happy, and I can tell you all of Apple, is very very excited to bring the iPhone to Verizon's customers.

5 megapixel camera, HD video... the custom A4 chip. But most importantly, it provides an integrated customer experience that's far beyond what anyone else is providing. From iOS, to iTunes, to the App Store -- they're all designed to work together.

Dan Dee wrote:On February 3rd our existing customers will have an opportunity to pre-order... on February 10th, everyone will be able to order online, in stores, or in Apple stores

$199 for the 16GB, $299 for 32GB -- mobile hotspot included! Up to 5 devices.

Sprint & T-Mobile probably clamoring as well...

Q&A
Is the CDMA iPhone exclusive to Verizon?

Tim: It's a multi-year, non exclusive deal.

Question from Ars Technica: what happens when you're on a call and need to use data?

Dan: Same as a CDMA device.

So... you don't.

2 quick little tidbits about the Verizon iPhone 4.
    1. Will come running iOS 4.2.5 (which from as best as I could tell only features the Personal Hotspot as a difference between it & iOS 4.2.1)
    2. The headphone jack & silent switch are slightly relocated due to the relocation of the gaps on the stainless steel band around the phone, meaning GSM iPhone 4 cases (in most cases) would not work with CDMA iPhone 4s.

An Italian site contacted Comex today to ask him about whether he is going to wait for Verizon iPhone 4 to launch, and the next iOS release, that is iOS 4.3 / 4.2.5 before releasing his untethered jailbreak. Comex swiftly replied that one month is too long a wait to keep the long-awaited untethered jailbreak from releasing.

So, if Apple releases iOS 4.2.5 on 10 February, you’ll preserver your new tool and exploits for that firmware? Maybe this will be a good move. Dev Team and Chronic Dev are releasing their tools for iOS 4.2.1, your can be saved for the future too.

Comex replied:
    I hadn’t seen that.
    Interesting.. but a month’s
    A long time to wait.

This response of Comex is completely opposite to his last reply where he said he was going to wait for Apple to release iOS 4.3 (or 4.2.2/4.2.5). So is the untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 ready? will he release it soon?

------

FireCore has announced Seas0nPass, a new jailbreak tool designed specifically for the Apple TV.

Seas0nPass was created exclusively for the AppleTV user, as previously no AppleTV specific jailbreak tools were available. Seas0nPass allows you to easily create custom AppleTV IPSW files and restore them in iTunes (similar to the existing Pwnage Tool app). Also included is a simple 'tethered boot' option which aids in using newer AppleTV firmwares when an 'un-tethered' jailbreak is not yet available.

What can I do with Seas0nPass?
● Jailbreak the AppleTV with the latest 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software.
● Easily perform a 'tethered boot' (when necessary).

The Verizon iPhone is here and it's a beautiful thing. Well, it's actually the same old thing with a slightly modified antenna. It's been reworked for Verizon's CDMA network, but will it fix the iPhone 4's death grip issue?

Check it out: the original AT&T iPhone 4's antenna notches have been shuffled (check Verizon Announcement post). Instead of three (two on the bottom corners, one on top by the headphone jack), there are now four—one at each corner. The Verizon's extra notch appears at the top left, and the headphone jack notch has slid down to just above the mute button at top left. There's no MicroSIM card slot built into the antenna, either.

NYT says Apple's Tim Cook confirmed that the antenna design had to be optimized for the phone's new CDMA guts, which justifies a slight design modification.

But what's unclear is if the new four-notch design will alleviate the death grip issues which plagued the AT&T iPhone 4 upon its arrival. If you'll recall, users were quick to notice that squeezing the iPhone 4 tightly—especially so that the antenna notch on the lower left corner of the phone was bridged—caused a rapid and significant decrease in signal. It turns out that such is the case with a lot of smartphones, but the permitter antenna design of the iPhone 4 seemed to exacerbate the problem.

Update: The first death grip tests reports are coming in. Here's what people are finding.

Ars Technica:

Ars contributor Chris Foresman reported that bridging the remaining gap on the Verizon iPhone (using the "death grip," he says) did not result in any kind of CDMA signal attenuation. He also placed a call while death gripping and said that there was no noticeable signal loss.
Over at PCMag, Sascha Segan writes:

Sitting at the demo bar, I managed to knock one bar off of the phone's signal indicator by tightly gripping the phone with both hands, covering all four antenna marks. Just covering the bottom of the phone didn't do it. But the demo room has excellent signal, and attenuation problems really show themselves in fringe signal areas. It'll take a real lab test to see how much Apple has improved the antenna here.

Segan's absolutely right—we won't know for sure that the Verizon iPhone has fixed the death grip issue until the phones end up in the hands of users themselves, especially users in locations that don't have perfect signal strength. The hands-on room at the Verizon event is likely aglow with signal-booster bandwidth, and as we know, the death grip claims its victims most quickly and cleanly in areas with medium to poor signal. Still, of the tests that are being conducted at the event, none have witnessed much signal attenuation to speak of.

SlashGear:

We put our hand in the standard "death grip" location, making sure that we covered up all of the right spots, and held onto the device for up to a minute. When we started the test, the device was at four bars. It should be noted that full service is represented on the iPhone 4 with 5 bars. So, the test started with only four bars being shown. As we held the device, and we timed it at a minute, we watched as only one bar disappeared.
We then put our fingers over certain points on the device. Making sure to cover up the "new" top portion of the antenna, and we still couldn't reproduce the "death grip" symptoms that plagued the initial launch of the iPhone 4. You can check out the images from our test below, but it looks like Verizon's confidence in the iPhone 4 on their network seem to be pretty sound.

------

Apple Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook revealed on Tuesday that his company's agreement with Verizon for the CDMA iPhone is non-exclusive, meaning the new handset could also appear on Sprint's CDMA network.

When asked if the new CDMA iPhone is exclusive to Verizon, Cook called the deal "multi-year" and "non-exclusive." That means the other major CDMA carrier in the U.S., Sprint, could also offer Apple's smartphone, if it were to reach a deal with Apple.

Of course, the non-exclusive deal also leaves open the possibility of a future GSM iPhone offering compatibility with the fourth-largest carrier in the U.S., T-Mobile.

T-Mobile's U.S. network relies on different frequencies in the AWS 3G spectrum, supporting the 1700MHz and 2100MHz bands, while AT&T supports 850MHz and 1900MHz. The current iPhone hardware does not support the 1700MHz frequency, meaning a modification of the hardware would be necessary.

Another possibility could be regional wireless provider MetroPCS, the fifth-largest carrier in the U.S. Like Verizon and Sprint, it too operates a CDMA network.

Prior to Tuesday's news, some had speculated that Verizon could pay Apple extra in their deal to keep the iPhone away from other carriers like T-Mobile and Sprint, leaving Apple's smartphone only available from AT&T ant Verizon.

Outside of the U.S., the new CDMA iPhone will likely also allow Apple to make the iPhone available on other carriers like China Telecom. Last October, it was rumored that Apple and China Telecom were already in talks to offer a CDMA variant of the iPhone.

------

Both iPhoneClub and iPhoneHellas claim that GSM iPhones will soon gain the Verizon iPhone’s ‘Personal Hotspot’ feature. The feature is said to be coming at the GSM carrier’s discretion in an upcoming iOS 4.3 update. The feature allows the iPhone to turn into a mobile hotspot that can provide a wireless internet connection to up to five devices simultaneously. Both sites have very accurate track records when it comes to predicting iOS updates and no launch information has been given at this time. Business Insider adds that AT&T is “evaluating” the feature so we’ll have to see if AT&T chooses to support it.

Google has released a Google Places application for the iPhone and iPod touch.

Google Places with Hotpot helps you discover nearby places you'll love. Quickly search for Restaurants, Cafes, Bars and other places, while on the go.

Google Places also makes it easy to quickly rate the places you visit. By rating places, you power Hotpot -- Google's new personalized recommendation engine, which lets you get place recommendations based on the places you like and recommendations from your friends.

You can download Google Places from the App Store for free.

Apple released the iOS 4.3 beta earlier today & it brings shows a good bit of new features for the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G & iPad. Unfortunately as you may or may not have noticed Apple has seemed to have dropped support for the iPhone 3G & iPod touch 2G.

Sorry iPhone 3G & iPod touch 2G owners

Image
iOS 4.3 brings a new FaceTime icon

Image
as well as full screen iAd banners. (Anyone's actually seen an iAd as yet?)

Image
brings new multi-touch gestures to the iPad. The new gestures include pinching out to the home screen (no home button on iPad?!), swiping up for multi-tasking, and swiping left/right on your screen to switch apps (sort of like 10.7′s Mission Control).

Also there is the possibility, as found by iSpazio, while searching through the SDK that hints that camera effects may be coming as well. Those that were found are
    Thermal Camera
    X-ray
    Kaleidoscope
    Normal
    Tunnel of Light
    Collapse
    Turbine

Image
iOS 4.3 also brings AirPlay to 3rd party apps.

Image
& last (probably for now) but not least Personal Hotspot for GSM iPhones.

Looks like iOS 5.0 is when the CDMA & GSM iPhones version numbers will be the same, that is unless iOS 4.3 is released not too long after the CDMA iPhones which look like they will come out with iOS 4.2.5.

looks like that might be the case

We just got some pretty wild information from one of our Apple sources and while it’s hard to believe at first, it does make sense. We have exclusively been told that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button. Yes, we are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher.

That’s not all, however. In addition to the home button disappearing from the iPad, we’re told that this change will make its way over to the iPhone as well. Our source said Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones with no home buttons on the Apple campus, and it’s possible we will see this new change materialize with the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices set to launch this year.

Additionally, we’re told Apple’s popular photo-taking application, Photo Booth, will be appearing on the next iPad. It’s also very possible that we’ll see iLife apps for iOS unveiled around the iPad 2 release as well.

It has been said that Steve Jobs didn’t want any physical buttons on the original iPhone at first, and it looks like he may soon get his wish.

I got that sense when the initial iPhone was released that he really wanted even more of a minimalist design than it already had. That would be quite the iPhone, let alone phone at all, to use. Opens up the option for a bigger screen I suppose. 4" perhaps?

Yet another gem found inside iOS 4.3. This time its a Find My Friends. Think Google Latitude but from Apple. Me like.

------

Yesterday it was reported that there may be a possibility that the next iPhone, iPod touch & iPad may loose their Home buttons. Here are some things to consider:

How do you do a hard reset without a home button?
And what about people without all of their fingers?
The physical home button is still functioning when the touch panel interface crashes. Soft buttons and gestures crash here too.
There are too many reasons to need a home button for us to believe this. Maybe the home button moves to the bottom?

Hmmm....

Image
Not really surprising. The code for the next iPhone & iPad were discovered in iOS 4.3 beta.

Again not surprising had you been following the iPad news but found in the SDK for iOS 4.3, these images which show the camera & video camera icons for the next iPad. What is interesting though is that the resolution for them remains at 1024x768, which is the iPad's current resolution. No Retina Display for the new iPad?
