Small Sub... Small Space... I need advice!

I currently have Powerbass S-6c installed in my car that cover a very lovely range from about 60Hz up paired with my RE SX 12" in a box tuned to 30Hz taking over from 60Hz downwards.

Honestly I'm fed up with the sub taking up the entire trunk and I want to get something in a sealed fiberglass enclosure.

This is not for a bang-out session but it'd be nice it it could be used to turn it up a bit.

I have 400RMS @ 4ohms available.

My budget for the entire project (including fibreglass) is $1,400. I will be building the enclosure(s) my self.

What I need advice on is the sub of choice. I know it's 80% install... but it's 20% equipment. I want to get low. I'm looking at a range of about 25/27Hz - 60Hz output or even lower.

My choices thus far:

2 x RE 8" - $800
1 x ID 8 - $800
1 x ID 10 - $1,000

Price is a factor. So if you have any other recommendations please suggest, state price and the capabilities of the woofer.

I don't really want bigger than 10" because i want to keep the enclosure small.

rockford p2 d2 10", you dont need an explaination as to how they perform, you heard my 15" in the wrong enclosure & tuned horribly & it was still flexing the door glasses.
now its properly tuned, in a better enclosure & sounding sweeter than sugar.

check sr he might be able to link u with some of the elemental designs 6 or 7inch subwoofers.. u could use a few of those.. off the top of my head they are pretty cheap and the enclosure size is .25 or .35 sealed

i used them about 4 years ago and they were pretty good woofers

Ok I checked them all out and it's between the 11Kv and 11Ov

I am loving the Ov for the lower Fs but loving the Kv for the higher sensitivity.

Price makes the difference at this point as they are both lovely woofers.

But please post the price of the 9kv and sq10 as well please as i might just get two of those to compensate

You'd be surprised the size of the enclosures that some Huge subs require.

From looking at the pic, I feel you will end up with more space if you do one sub to a side. Having speakers on both sides may not leave enough room in the middle for any kind of reasonable storage space.

How much storage space are you really looking for? Small grocery / market items or larger stuff?

Personal opinion, I would do a ported fiberglass / mdf enclosure for a single 10" sub. The fiberglass layers will go against the corner section to make the most of the available space. MDF to square off / finish the enclosure / house the sub and ported for the higher efficiency / low bass. A single 10 for ease of install / cone area.

If you like a nice clean low bass that can get loud occasionally, ported is definitely the way to go. Small subs + sealed enclosures + low power may disappoint..

Did you ever check how much power some of the SQ guys are using on their subwoofers? and even their components?

Ported boxes can yield very flat responses once tuned accordingly or they can be tuned to give a nice bump in the very low freq range (30 - 40Hz).

If tuned low (say 33Hz) you will get proper loading down to ~28Hz depending on the sub you are using. There is hardly any information in music below 28Hz anyway, unless you plan on watching alot of movies in your car..

I know you are aware of that already, but i'm just saying incase you go sealed and get disappointed at the lack of output from your low end.. Of course, I am assuming that you are an occasional basshead like me..

Well when I said that I didn't think that it was low power, I was definitely not comparing to the jeff's and the sundown's out there.

Honestly the 400 on the SX is so loud sometimes.

I see on the ED site they say the 11kv in a cu. ft. enclosure tuned to 30 is ideal.

I used water when I did my fiberglass enclosure. I would coat all the exposed mdf with resin so the water will not soak into it. Others will suggest packing peanuts, but I find that method to be slightly inaccurate. Do rough calculations before hand so you will have a decent idea of how large it needs to be. Or just build it alot deeper than needed, fill with water / sand etc to the required volume, mark and cut off the excess, then attach the baffle..

I say use cold beer......call me for disposal of the beer after you measured the internal volume.

I say build the enclosure a bit bigger than needed & see if it sounding good for you. some of the specs I saw on that site were questionable at one point in time. if the enclosure bigger then you can decrease the volume but if its too small well you will have to simply build a new one.

Rated 400 rms, come in single 4 ohm as well..

Can work in .8 sealed or 1.3 ported
