I see both papers stating the name as "Aalyah", so I guess you pronounce it normal as "Aliyah/Aaliyah"

I hope that justice would be properly served and I also hope that this will be a lesson for all of those irresponsible drivers, especially the ones who keep to the back of their minds that daddy, uncle or aunty so and so will pull some strings to save them.
No family wants their kin to be killed like that or to be behind that wheel but it's a sad reality that some face. A life is a precious thing that money cannot replace. Our "elite" society has quite a handfull of drivers that has killed someone on the road and got away silently attending futile court case after case and living their lives quite normally while a family mourns a loss.

No bail yet for woman charged with cop’s death
Sascha Wilson
Published: 26 Oct 2010
Sascha Wilson

A magistrate is expected to rule today whether the court can take away the driver’s permit of the 28-year-old woman who allegedly struck and killed SRP Renaul Dobson and injured his colleague with her car two Sundays ago.
Aalyah Popalie, 28, of San Juan, appeared yesterday before senior magistrate Debra Quintyne in the Chaguanas First Court on two charges but was remanded into custody to reappear today.
Quintyne said she needed time to consider whether she could impose as a condition on Popalie’s bail that she surrender her driver’s permit.

Represented by attorney Michelle Solomon, Popalie was not called upon to plead to the two charges since they were laid indictably. The charges alleged that on October 15 at the south-bound lane of the Solomon Hochoy Highway she drove her vehicle dangerously, causing the death of PC Renaul Dobson; also that she caused grievous bodily harm to policewoman Wendy Ann Timothy. The two police officers were directing traffic when they were struck. Timothy remains warded in a serious condition at the San Fernando General Hospital. In her application for bail, Solomon said Popalie had no previous convictions or pending matters.

She said Popalie lived with her parents and was willing to subject herself to any conditions the court might impose on her. She said her client’s mother and fiancé were in court. Court prosecutor Sgt Asraph Haspoodeen did not object to bail but suggested a substantial amount due to the seriousness of the offences. Saying a message had to be sent to other drivers, he suggested the accused surrender her driver’s permit and report once a week to the police station. Solomon said her client was willing to surrender her permit. However, the magistrate questioned whether she had the jurisdiction to order her to surrender her permit.

Noting that a person would be ordered to surrender a passport if they were considered to be a flight risk, she questioned: “What is the authority in the Motor Vehicle Road Traffic Act to impose the condition to surrender of a driver’s permit?” Solomon said under the Bail Act a magistrate was allowed to impose any conditions on bail. However, the magistrate said one could always argue that the court was imposing a sanction on her (Popalie) by taking away her right to drive. Saying she needed time to consider it, the magistrate asked the prosecutor to find the authority that gave her the jurisdiction to impose that particular condition of bail. She adjourned the matter to today.

NO BAIL FOR LEXUS DRIVER
...Woman charged with crash death of policeman
By Nikita Braxton-Benjamin South Bureau

Story Updated: Oct 26, 2010 at 12:08 AM ECT

Aalyah Dimple Popalie, 28, showed no emotion when told by Couva Senior Magistrate Debra Quintyne about the court's decision.

Her mother and the man she plans to marry in December attended the court hearing.

Popalie was allegedly at the wheel of a Lexus car headed south on the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway in Freeport, when Constables Dopson and Wendy-Ann Timothy were struck.

Dopson, 26 was killed at the scene. Timothy remains at the San Fernando General Hospital with multiple injuries. Both officers were on duty directing traffic as roadworks were in progress.

Popalie, of Pargar Singh Avenue, El Socorro Extension, San Juan, was arrested over the weekend following instructions by the Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard.

She is charged with driving her car dangerously and causing the death of Dopson, and also charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Timothy.

Both charges were laid by Sgt Gregory Worrell. Popalie was not called upon to plead.

Defence attorney Michelle Solomon asked for bail.

She said her client had no previous or pending matters.

"She is willing to be subjected to, any conditions the court wants to impose," Solomon said.

Police prosecutor Sgt Asraph Haspoodeen made no objection to bail but said that it should be a "substantial amount" with the condition that Popalie report to the police station in her area once a week.

He also asked that Popalie surrender her driver's permit "given the nature of the offence where a person died and another was in serious but stable condition".

He said a message needed to be sent to other drivers.

Quintyne asked for time to consider the prosecution's request.

She asked for the legal backing in the Motor Vehicle Road Traffic Act related to the police request for the surrender of Popalie's driver's permit.

She said it could be later argued by another attorney that the court imposed a sanction on Popalie by taking away her privilege to drive.

"I want time to consider it ... I'm not going to rush through it," the magistrate said.

She ordered that Haspoodeen and Solomon address her on the legal issue today.

Popalie was escorted from the Freeport Police Station before she was taken to court yesterday morning.

Two Sundays ago, Dopson, of Ghany Trace, Chase Village, Chaguanas was killed when a car driven by Popalie crashed against a truck parked on the shoulder of the highway near an area where roadwork was being done by the Works and Transport Ministry.

Dopson, a police officer for three years, was attached to the Couva Municipal Police and was on duty on the highway when he was killed.

He was buried after a military funeral last week Wednesday. Timothy of Sea Grape Drive, Cashew Gardens, has been in the service for the past seven years. She was last attached to the Brasso Police Post.

No bail for UWI student

By AZARD ALI Tuesday, October 26 2010

UNIVERSITY of the West Indies student Aaliyah Dimple Popalie, 28, was yesterday remanded into custody by a Couva Magistrate before whom she appeared charged with killing Police Constable Renauld Dopson and seriously injuring WPC Wendy Ann Timothy.

Popalie is accused of driving her Lexus car into the two officers who were at the time on duty along the Solomon Hochoy Highway on the night of October 17. Dopson died on the spot. WPC Timothy remains warded recovering from her injuries.

The accused was remanded into custody and told to reappear in court today by Senior Magistrate Debra Quintyne who advised the accused woman’s attorney Michelle Solomon that she (Quintyne) needed some time to think about court prosecutor Sgt Asraph Haspodeen’s request that Popalie’s driver’s permit be seized as a condition for bail being granted.

Popalie was arrested by warrant on Sunday at her Paragsingh Avenue, El Socorro home and yesterday a female police officer escorted her into the courthouse where Quintyne read two charges to her.

The first charge alleges that on October 17, Popalie drove her car along the southbound lane of the highway causing the death of PC Renauld Dopson. The second charge alleged that Popalie caused grievous bodily harm to WPC Wendy Ann Timothy. Charges were laid by Sgt Worrell of the Couva Police Station.

Solomon asked Quintyne to grant bail and while Sgt Haspoodeen agreed that this could be done, he requested that the bail sum be substantial and for the court to attach conditions including that Popalie surrender her DP and report to a police station.

“I am remanding her into custody,” Quintyne said, “having regard to the prosecution’s request which I must research in order to determine whether I have the authority to take away her permit.”

“The accused is willing to surrender to the prosecution the permit, Your Worship. If there is doubt (on the legality of such a move) should the prosecution not withdraw that request?” Solomon asked.

“You are seeking bail for your client. I’m not going to rush into this. I need a day to determine whether I have the authority to take her permit as a condition for bail. I am asking the prosecutor to give me the authorities where I have jurisdiction to take her permit,” Quintyne said as she remanded Popalie into custody. Senior attorney Sophia Chote joined Solomon in the courtroom and up to late yesterday was seeking to have a judge of the High Court grant bail to the woman.

i actually feel sorry for this girl as this one mistake is going to ruin her life just that single lapse in her judgment and she now faces some serious punishment. i think we should all look at this as an example next time you feel impatient or you are late for work mayeb overtaking that person doing 60 isnt the best option.

Nah I dont feel sorry. God knows how many times she used to be driving on the shoulder, so it's probably not a single lapse of judgement. I still cannot wrap my head around someone driving on the shoulder to avoid obvious traffic during highway maintenance at such a speed that you INSTANTLY kill a man. Nah. She hadda suffer some consequences. It's unfortunate that apparently she had a bright future etc., but such is life. At least she still has a future. SRP Dopson... well... doesn't.
