Jobs lashes out at Android, RIM, tablets

Steve Jobs doesn’t usually make a guest appearance on Apple’s post-earnings conference calls with analysts, but after Apple’s first $20 billion quarter, he made an exception. The result was an instant classic, as Apple’s CEO laid out how he views the phone and tablet markets, taking shots at Google and Research In Motion (RIM) and ripping the idea of a seven-inch tablet.

Image

Blowing past BlackBerry
Jobs started by taking on BlackBerry-maker RIM by explaining that RIM is fading in Apple’s rearview mirror. In the just-concluded quarter, Apple sold 14.1 million iPhones, compared to 12.1 million BlackBerries sold in RIM’s most recently-reported quarter, which ended in August.

“We’ve now passed RIM, and I don’t see them catching up with us in the foreseeable future,” Jobs said. “They must move beyond their area of strength and comfort into the unfamiliar territory of trying to become a software platform company. I think it’s going to be a challenge for them to create a competitive platform and to convince developers to create apps for yet a third software platform, after iOS and Android... RIM has a high mountain ahead of them to climb.”

Debating with Google
Jobs focused most of his remarks on Android, Google’s competing smartphone operating system. He openly questioned the reality of Android market-share statistics and attacked the search giant for marketing its operating system as “open” versus Apple’s “closed” iOS.

“Last week, Eric Schmidt reiterated that they are activating around 200,000 Android devices per day,” Jobs said. “For comparison, Apple has activated around 275,000 iOS devices per day on average for the last 30 days, with a peak of almost 300,000 iOS devices per day on a few of those days.”

The Apple CEO lamented the lack of tangible data about the number of Android phones that are actually shipped. “Unfortunately, there is no solid data… we hope that manufacturers will soon start reporting the number of Android handsets they ship each quarter, but today that just isn't the case... We await to see if iPhone or Android was the winner in the most recent quarter.”

Jobs moved on to attack Google’s characterization of Android as a more open platform than Apple’s as a disingenuous attempt to obfuscate the reality of how Android differs from the iOS.

“Google loves to characterize Android as ‘open’ and iOS and iPhone as ‘closed.’ We find this a bit disingenuous, and clouding the real difference between our two approaches,” Jobs said. “The first thing most of us think about when we hear the word ‘open’ is Windows, which is available on a variety of devices. Unlike Windows, however, where most PCs have the same user interface and run the same apps, Android is very fragmented. Many Android [manufacturers], including the two largest, HTC and Motorola, install proprietary user interfaces to differentiate themselves from the commodity Android experience. The user's left to figure it out. Compare this to iPhone, where every handset works the same.”

As an example of why Android is a bad platform for App developers, Jobs cited a Twitter client developer (which he referred to as “TwitterDeck,” though presumably he meant TweetDeck) that reported it had to support more than 100 versions of Android software on 244 different handsets. Jobs also pointed out that in addition to the Android Marketplace, there are at least three other app stores being launched by vendors, causing confusion for users and work for developers.

“This is gonna be a mess for both users and developers,” Jobs said. “Contrast this with Apple’s integrated App Store, which offers users the easiest-to-use, largest app store in the world, preloaded on every iPhone.”

Besides which, Jobs said, “even if Google were right, and the real issue is ‘closed’ versus ‘open,’ it is worthwhile to remember that open systems don’t always win.” His example: Microsoft’s PlaysForSure venture used the PC model of separating hardware from software, but it crashed and burned. “Even Microsoft abandoned it in favor of copying Apple’s integrated approach,” Jobs said. “Even Google flirted with this integrated approach with their Nexus One phone,” he said.

“In reality, we think open versus closed is a smokescreen to hide the real issue,” Jobs continued, stating that the real debate is between “fragmented versus integrated” and which is better for the consumer. “We think Android is very, very fragmented and becoming more fragmented by the day,” Jobs said. “We think this is a huge strength of our approach compared to Google’s... When selling to users who want their devices to just work, we believe integrated will trump fragmented every time. And we also think our developers can be more innovative if they can target a singular platform rather than a hundred variants.”

Tablets ahoy
Jobs then turned to skewering the iPad’s impending competition, most of which feature seven-inch displays. Jobs discounted the seven-inch tablet form factor as “only 45 percent as large as a 10-inch screen,” and mocked the concept of an “avalanche” of forthcoming tablets.

“It appears to be just a handful of credible entrants, not exactly an avalanche,” Jobs said.

Then Jobs turned to attacking the seven-inch tablet form factor. “The 10-inch screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps,” Jobs said. “Every tablet user is also a smartphone user. No tablet can compete with a smartphone” when it comes to stashing it in a purse or pocket. “Seven-inch tablets are tweeners: too big to compete with a smartphone, and too small to compete with an iPad,” he said.

What’s worse, Jobs noted, current tablets run the Froyo version of Android that Google has specifically said isn’t ready for tablets. “What does it mean when your software supplier says not to use their software in your tablet? And what does it mean when you ignore them and use it anyway?”

Jobs predicted that, in the end, “the current crop of seven-inch tablets are doing to be DOA” because they will ultimately “offer less for more” than the iPad. "Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small, and increase the size next year, thereby abandoning both customers and developers who jumped on the seven-inch bandwagon with an orphan product. Sounds like lots of fun ahead."

Whoa Jobs got better fast and is feisty and at it again.

He must be getting worried to lash out like that.

Seriously i think BB will have the corporate share for quite a while.
Android just keeps gaining momentum and is a serious contender in smartphone market.

Having used both the Iphone and Samsung Galaxy S (Android) i can say that there isn't anything that either cannot do. I made a personal choice to stick with Android because of the ability to compile custom kernels and the availability of the operating system source code.

It is hard to say whether IOS or Android would come out in front(in the long haul) or even if it is important. What i can tell is that both systems will lead and change the game for the foreseeable future, which is a good thing for consumers.

dam honestly i got alot of respect for him but he really reaching like dhalsim in ssf.
Android could run on tablet = ANY LINUX DISTRO WILL RUN so no doa.
i think of the ipad in the sense he compared the 7 inchers, ipad= same as a netbook but with less you could actually get done i.e (pay more for less) my 7inch tablet replaces my netbook/gps/carputer/(phone too if i wasnt a heavy bb user.)

^^^ the point he's making is that the 7" imitation are NOT cheaper than Apple's 10"

Obviously Apple spent a few billion $$$ on R&D to settle on the screen size. And when you buy a 7 incher, you are actually getting LESS and paying the same price, if not proportionally more.

Still that data is interesting. Apple isn't just nudging out the competitors, they are out-selling by a pretty large number than all of the Android phones combined. Hardware for hardware, the clones win on specs alone. But Apple is making both the hardware and software and that is the key right there.

Well on the software side developers are quickly pushing Android apps in conjunction with their Iphone apps.

Covering two operating systems = more money.

So you will see Android being widely supported as time goes by(if it is not already), as this happens, you will also see and increase in sales of handsets.

Multiple markets is not necessarily a problem for Android users.
When Amazon's App store launches it will be a good thing and you never know it may take over as the preferred paid market app. Judging from the way they conduct their web store.

But there's no sense in fighting over the two, they're both good operating systems.
Iphone users will actually benefit from Android competition so they should not complain, even though some of hardware is being kept from them (Super AMOLED, etc).

All Steve is doing is stirring up the fan-base in order to keep product loyalty, some followers will get caught unwittingly by this and go into attack mode.

At the end of the day you have to look objectively at the value for money in terms of hardware, software and network coverage. Everything else is just fluff.

Good points. I mostly agree.

Now as a Mac user I love how the iPhone, iPad, iLife, iMac etc all feel as one prosumer solution. A Windows user won't see things the same way and might fully wrap their minds around it. So in a way, those guys have more 'choice' than I do. Think about it.. when the choice is obvious, there really is no choice.

It comes down really to your personal philosophy and how well the Reality Distortion Field affects you.

If anyone comes here and even mentions wmp7 they will be shot eh...

After being warped by iOS and getting uber lazy, yes the drama is intense, i dont think I'm gonna switch... i just love how it's sooo nice in iOS and I'm too lazy to relearn what i learnt now...

I actually dont own Mac system and i love it... if I'd own a Mac or used a hackintosh to sync i know i'd be having even more fun! (had one but had to remove it, but considering putting it back)

Rubin just shot himself in the foot.

Why would the average consumer look at that jargon and be inclined to wanna use products he helped design? Simple english would have done a better job at conveying user friendliness.

Edit: and to think Rubin worked at Apple and that's what he could come up with?

In the wake of such huge news from Apple today, it's hard to concentrate on anything else. Here's one story you wont want to miss, though: Chillingo, the publisher behind the wildly popular game Angry Birds, was acquired by EA Games for a cool $20 million in cash.

Not to worry, though, because Angry Birds isn't going anywhere. The rights to the game are actually owned by the developer Rovio, who updated his Twitter profile earlier today to clarify that Angry Birds was not part of the sale and will not be controlled development-wise by EA. Even so, it's no secret that the App Store's most popular game of all time certainly helped to sway EA towards this acquisition. With many successful apps available, Chillingo probably looked pretty delicious to all of the big fish in the game industry who were hoping to cash in on the mobile market.

------

& in other Angry Birds news

Attention, Angry Birds fans! According to the game's maker Rovio, Angry Birds: Halloween should be hitting Apple's App Store tonight at midnight your local time.
The game is exclusive to Apple's iOS platform, with a regular version for iPhones and iPod Touches at 99 cents, and an HD version for iPads for $1.99.
It's not an add-on, but a stand-alone game with 45 levels, new elements, graphics, and sounds. And don't worry about future Angry Birds updates, Rovio has pledged to keep adding new levels to the regular game, which I've beaten, with three stars, on every level and every egg. Jealous?

It was discovered that you can run both a FaceTime and an iChat video chat on your Mac at the same time. Full audio and video for both chats. Video:

Here is a look at Steve Jobs' business card from 1979. For its day, this was quite an impressive card having an embossed and stylized font for the logo.

The address listed, 10260 Bandley Drive Cupertino CA, is a street from the current Apple campus at 1 Infinite Loop and apparently the phone number still goes to Apple's switchboard.

Pascal Finette, Director Mozilla Labs, describes the photo: "I took the photo after a colleague brought the card into work the other day – the phone number on the card is still Apple’s main switch board."

"By the way – the one thing you can't see on the picture is the fact that the business card has an embossed Apple logo! So they definitely went all way out and spent quite some serious cash on their business cards (which doesn’t surprise me with Steve)."

iGotYa is a new app available on Cydia which allows you to find out who was last trying to use your iPhone when you were away, or sleeping. Here is how it works:

Image

iGotYa will allow you to take a picture of the person trying to use your phone (using front-facing camera) and get the location where your iPhone is at. You will need to protect your iPhone with a unlock code and iGotYa will do the rest. if the unlock code is entered wrong then iGotYa will take a picture and the location of your iPhone silently and send it to your email. You can also allow access to the iPhone with a wrong code entered but all your personal data (SMS, Call History, Web History, Mail, etc) will be hidden.

You will of course need to have a jailbroken iPhone to install it.

Image

iGotYa can be downloaded from Cydia for $4.99 under ModMyi repository. A free trial version of the app is also available.

VLC player for iPhone is now available for general consumption. While there are some issues, you can now play a much wider array of movie formats on the iPhone.

What’s New in Version 1.1.0:
This new version of VLC brings :
- Runs on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the recent iPod touches
- You can now delete files from the application, without having to go through iTunes
- Many more extensions are being recognized.
- Much faster decoding thanks to assembly optimizations
