Just remember... this new SHAtter JB is for new devices ONLY!

3GS/ipt3g and younger are all left out.

Only A4 Family devices will be pwnt.

@sherif_hashim did have hope that a userland jb should be out for us. not sure when.

And remember.. DO NOT update to 4.1 stock.. use a custom f/w. There will be custom f/w's soon for iphone 4 according to musclenerd.

Back in June, Apple spent a great deal of hoopla touting the new FaceTime feature of the iPhone 4 -- but the market for video chat is heating up quickly, and now Yahoo has lined up to be the next contender in the App Store as well as on Android devices.

Reuters is reporting that Yahoo is planning to update its popular Yahoo Messenger app to enable built-in video calling, according to the company’s vice-president of mobile for the Americas, David Katz. Yahoo’s video chat will be available as a free app for both the iPhone as well as Android devices.

Yahoo is clearly taking aim at Apple’s new FaceTime, which is already being challenged by rivals such as fring and the recently released Tango -- although neither of those companies have the brand recognition of Yahoo. What all three companies do have as a leg up on Apple is the ability to offer their video calling over both Wi-Fi and 3G, where FaceTime is (for now) a Wi-Fi only service that requires either an iPhone 4 or a fourth-generation iPod touch.

The free Yahoo app will enable video calling between other iPhone and Android users with the app installed, but will also extend to desktop PCs that have the software installed. Katz claims there are currently 81 million Yahoo Messenger users worldwide, so that’s a lot of folks to potentially talk to.

Yahoo’s app update appears to be ready to go, but still has to leap one last hurdle, which is Apple’s approval. Given that several competing apps with similar features already exist, this shouldn’t be an issue and the company expects the updated Yahoo Messenger to hit the App Store “soon.”

------

The iPhone Dev-Team has released an update to the Windows version of RedSn0w which can jailbreak the iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G on iOS 4.1

You can download the Windows version here.

Remember if you need to unlock your device please don't use RedSn0w has it requires an update to your baseband. Wait for the release of PwnageTool for iOS 4.1

------

MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev-Team, has announced that the SHAtter jailbreak itself is tethered but comex has come up with a way to untether it!

Those reading between the lines: Yes SHAtter itself is tethered. @comex came up with a way to untether it on 4.1/3.2.2

SHAtter is yet another breed of exploit. Bootrom-based but requires userland "assistance" for untethered boots (@comex did this for 4.1)

This is excellent news since a tethered jailbreak would require your iDevice to be connected to the computer for reboot.

The Greenp0ison jailbreak will be released October 10th at 10:10:10 GMT.

Goodday, so i jailbreaked and unlocked my iphone3gs O.S. 3.1.2 in december 09 with blackra1n. And whenever it has slowed down or needed to restart i would just use blackra1n again. However yesterday blackra1n refused to work. I dont know if i accidentally upgraded...so i was trying a restore to 3.1.2 with snowbreeze and keep getting a 1604 error message during the process from itunes. I really dont want to fiddle with it anymore and would like to know from this forum where you guys take your iphone whenever you have serious problems

Thanks for the help

Geohot has suddenly appeared back on the jailbreak scene with a new bootrom exploit he is calling limera1n.

Geohot posted a picture on www.limera1n.com of four iDevices displaying the limera1n logo.

P0sixninja has since confirmed that it is real:

yes, the news about geohot is true, the day after we release ETA he decides he wants a piece of the #pie

and yes it is a different bootrom exploit, he wants us to use it in GP, but there's no way we'll make our ETA if we do

Greenpois0n was scheduled to be released on October 10th, at 10:10:10 GMT.

StealthBravo also tweeted: geohot's return is no joke. He is back and is going to release limera1n unless someone talks him out of it.

Update:
P0sixninja has said that they will use Geohot's exploit if they can implement it in time; however, they will not change the release date.

We are not changing our release date. If we can implement @geohots before 10/10 we will use that, otherwise we're using ours. #roadblocks

Update 2:
MuscleNerd: As dramatic as geohot's last-minute all-device JB is, still a shame that two bootrom holes will be burned at once.

It seems like only yesterday that the iPhone 4 was released, but how time flies when you're having fun. With the whole antennagate issue mostly behind us, most folks are just settling down to getting the best out of their shiny new iPhone. After all, its only been around four months since it was released.

So, with that in mind, it's hard to believe that talk of the next iPhone is already in circulation. Believe it or not, the rumor mill is once again churning out talk of Apple's next iteration of the iPhone - the enigma that is affectionately dubbed the iPhone 5.

TechRadar has compiled a roundup of some of the hottest rumored features that we may see in the iPhone 5. Here's a brief summary of what they report, but remember, it's only speculation.

Kicking us off, the iPhone 5 release is expected to be in June / July of 2011 because that's the time cycle that other iPhone releases have followed. However, iLounge has guessed that the next iPhone could be with us as early as January of next year (even they admit this is "hard to believe."). The reason for a January 2010 release of the next iPhone, simply put, would be to resolve, with new hardware, the now mostly blown over antennagate issue.

Next up, there's been talk of the iPhone 5 being equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, essentially turning the iPhone 5 into a digital wallet (allowing you to make credit / debit card like payments with the phone). Apple has released a patent demonstrating such technology, but this was some time ago, so it's unclear as to whether Apple is planning this for deployment in the iPhone 5.

Furthermore, the next iPhone is rumored to be evolutionary as apposed to revolutionary. Similar to the design shift from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 5 will be akin to the iPhone 4, but a beefed up version. Rumored specs are of a faster processor (1.2GHz), more memory and larger storage, and a 3.7' screen (as apposed to the current 3.5' one on the iPhone 4). The iPhone 5 may also be made of a new material, perhaps some kind of alloy. Oh, and of course, a revamped antenna!

And, a big one here (note the sarcasm in my words), there's talk of the Verizon iPhone. TechRadar reports sources that have handled Verizon iPhone prototypes, though, according to Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg, that's not likely to happen. Verizon fans, let's hope you don't get let down again

Finally, TechRadar reports that at least one analyst believes the iPhone 5 will support LTE super fast mobile broadband (in the U.S. anyway), which will make the iPhone 5 a 4G phone.

Of course, this is all pure speculation and could amount to nothing more than a big whoosh of hot air. But then again, the next version of the iPhone is coming. Let the countdown begin.

djcase00, depending on if the iPhone 3GS is still running iOS 3.1.2 to 4.0.1 I would recommend restoring (backing up data 1st of course) using www.jailbreakme.com to jailbreak & ultrasn0w to unlock. According to the sources though, a jailbreak for 4.1 is expected sometime on Sunday, so relief hopefully may not be too far off.

hopefully he "made life easy" and has SHSH's backed up and has an AT&T sim in order to activate his phone. or else apple wont allow him to do any other besides 4.1.

And yes i know of someone who did not backup their SHSH's because "i didnt think i'd screw it up."
sigh. lets pray he did.

good luck buddy :)

I told him he just has to wait till the dev team release an unlock for 05.14.02

Update: jus saw that limerain was released

http://www.limera1n.com/

does that mean that the sim card unlock try is no longer valid and I could use this instead and unlock the iphone 4 ?

Little more details

Geohot is back, and has just released the latest iOS jailbreak. The jailbreak is untethered which means you don’t need to plug it in everytime you want to turn it on. It works for iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4G on iOS 4.0, 4.01 and everything after that.

The jailbreak is sort of still in beta and doesn’t include that one-click-jailbreak feature from past releases. Oh, and it’s only for Windows at this time – Mac and Linux coming soon. If you really want to jailbreak you may want to wait for Chronic’s Green Poison. The Chronic dev-team has let us know that the untethering feature is “unstable right now” so take caution. WHOA! Geohot just pulled the download link: We still haz it, get it here.

If you love the JB community AND your iDevice. You will try your best to avoid limera1n... well for the while.

Remember who made it? who will be providing support.

Word is, it doesnt work on 3G, ipt2g and New Bootrom 3GS as well.

Geohot actually stole @comex's untethering solution and released it out from beta.

so if you use it and getting issues... ask geohot for help.

Right now chronic devteam, have 3 choices:
A) Not release greenpois0n, B) Burn a second bootrom expoit, or C) Break our ETA and implement geo's exploit

Looking for an jailbreak for your iPod, iPad or iPhone running iOS 4.1? Your chariot is named limera1n -- assuming you're willing to risk your device on a software developer showdown. The infamous Geohot just upstaged the iPhone Dev Team and Chronic Dev Team by releasing a reportedly buggy beta exploit of his own. It only works on Windows at the moment, hacks only official releases and iPhone 3GS isn't supported right now, and it claims to be an unpatchable, untethered release for those of you who appreciate what those terms mean.

As you can imagine, rival developers aren't terribly happy that Geohot's back in the limelight. MuscleNerd (of the iPhone Dev Team) claims that limera1n will re-lock iPhones that were unlocked by his team's ultrasn0w software, and recommends you skip limera1n, but the main reason the iOS hacking community is angry at Geohot is because if more than one exploit is released simultaneously, Apple can fix them both in one fell swoop. By releasing first, Geohot has allegedly forced other teams to decide between the good of iPhone users over the short term (by releasing a different, more stable exploit) or over the long term (by saving their exploit for future use) and so far it looks like both teams have chosen to prolong the fight -- the iPhone Dev Team is asking folks to withhold its SHAtter exploit, and Chronic Dev Team says it will modify its greenpois0n jailbreak to use Geohot's hack instead.

iPhone Dev Team wrote:After a few very dramatic days in the jailbreak community, geohot has come out of nowhere to release limera1n. It’s a bootrom-level jailbreak that works on the iPhone3GS, iPhone4, iPod touch 3G, iPod touch 4G, the iPad, and (technically) the AppleTV 2G.

DO NOT USE LIMERA1N IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W CARRIER UNLOCK — wait for PwnageTool to incorporate the limera1n exploit. This is so that you can avoid updating your baseband and losing the unlock (possibly forever).

Limera1n uses a different exploit than SHAtter, and in fact covers more devices. Although some may question geohot’s dramatic and competitive style, he obviously does have considerable skill pulling this together in just over a day (although he’s had the underlying exploit for months). Credit also goes to @comex, who provides the untethered aspect of limera1n via another one of his growing list of kernel hacks.

The release of limera1n has (hopefully!) averted the burning of 2 bootrom holes at once (both his and SHAtter). Releasing SHAtter now would be a complete waste of a perfectly good bootrom hole in light of limera1n, and so it can be held until Apple closes limera1n’s hole. While there’s no guarantee that Apple won’t also close SHAtter by then, it provides a ray of hope for devices after Apple’s bootrom respin. Meanwhile, look for an alternate implementation of the limera1n exploit in greenpois0n (and possibly other tools), where it should undergo more testing too.

Limera1n wasn’t tested very thoroughly and does have some issues. Geohot typically works these out in subsequent (and rapid) releases (there are already 3 beta versions of it as of Saturday night!).

------

GreenPois0n took weeks upon weeks upon weeks of development and hard work from the Chronic Dev Team. The SHAtter exploit based tool was supposed to release today, but after the release of George Hotz’ Limera1n (which is based on a new exploit; pwns all iOS 4.1 devices), Chronic Dev Team had to make a very tough decision.

If the Chronic Dev Team were to release Greenpois0n today, it would be wasting a very important exploit (SHAtter). And they don’t want to let a perfectly good exploit waste away. So what they are going to do is delay GreenPois0n. Yes, you heard that right. After weeks of anticipation, the GreenPois0n tool is being delayed.

Chronic Dev Team wrote:Greenpois0n will now be reworked on. Chronic Dev Team will be saving the SHAtter exploit for later iOS devices and implementing Geohot’s limera1n exploit.

Thanks to the irresponsible antics of geohot, we will have to delay the release of greenpois0n (new ETA = as soon as possible), so that we have time to clean up his little mess and integrate the exploit he uses in limera1n into greenpois0n. This way, we can save SHAtter for future devices that may still be vulnerable to it.

We know that this is not what some people want to hear, but due to geohot needing to feed his ego (as usual) and revealing his limera1n exploit, we do not have any other responsible options.

While we are all happy that we got a much awaited, an all-device, iOS 4.1 jailbreak via Limera1n, we do however commend Chronic Dev Team’s decision of delaying the GreenPois0n tool release. As hard as that decision probably was to make, it is for the best interest of the jailbreak community.

We’ve seen our fair share of iClones in the past but this product out of China has taken the knockoff to a new level. It is quite unique in the fact it’s the first iClone we’ve come across that runs two mobile OS’s – Windows Mobile 6.5 and Android 2.1. The hardware is composed of a cheap plastic casing and buttons, 512MB of RAM, 5 megapixel camera sporting auto focus, and a 3.6 inch WVGA capacitive touch screen with multi-touch.
All of this can be yours for a cool $260.

This is almost a month old but is about the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. It showcases the iPhone’s ability to withstand crazy temperatures, high velocity, and wind.

Kind of hard to find iPhone related news on Windows Phone 7 launch day...

Update: Just finished watching the WP7 launch announcement (was curious). Here is my impression.

iOS device + Android device (thrown through a Window) = Windows Phone 7

That's pretty much it as far as I am concerned.

---

Great news for iPhone unlockers! It seems like Sherif Hashim has managed to crash the new 05.14.02 and 2.10.04 baseband which can ultimately lead to an unlock for iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2 for both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 users.

Image

hmm.., 95% of the tweets i get (at least the last 500) are either about 5.14 or 2.10

since nearly all my received tweets ask about both BB, I can report very early "initial" 1st step success on both sides, calmed down?

this won’t be feasible before the official 4.2 release at the earliest if everything went fine

But yes, don’t expect them to release it anytime before Apple releases iOS 4.2 to public. If you are an iPhone 4 user, you can either use TinyUmbrella to update to iOS 4.1 without the updated baseband, or wait for the new PwnageTool which will help you cook custom firmware files for iOS 4.1 without the upgraded baseband.

------

TechCrunch, which offered some of the earliest specific claims of a late 2010 manufacturing run for the Verizon iPhone, now reports that the fifth-generation iPhone due for release in mid-2011 will utilize a dual-mode chip to provide compatibility with both GSM and CDMA network technologies on a single device. The updated model will not, however, support the 4G LTE standard that several carriers are preparing to roll out.

First things first - the iPhone CDMA model due in January won't support LTE. But here's where it gets really interesting: sources tell me that the iPhone refresh in mid-2011 won't support LTE either. Instead, Apple will produce a dual mode iPhone containing 3G flavors of GSM and CDMA, which operates on all carriers worldwide. If this holds true, Apple won't support the LTE standard until some time in 2012.

The report goes on to note that Apple may be reluctant to offer 4G compatibility until some of the technological bugs have been worked out and deployment schedules allow the service to be extended to cover larger portions of the population.
Apple simply doesn't want to be the guinea pig on new LTE networks that aren't ready for primetime, and Steve Jobs knows not to trust the hype that's spewed by the carriers on 4G. The truth is that 3G networks have many more years of life, and the transition to LTE will be much slower than the carriers want you to believe (LTE doesn't even have its voice standard fleshed out yet).

A somewhat-delayed entry into the field of 4G devices would not be a new tactic for Apple, as the company similarly elected to offer the original iPhone as an EDGE-only device in 2007, despite the fact that 3G networks were already prevalent in many of its top markets.

George Hotz’ dramatic re-entry into the iOS jailbreaking scene has left many surprised, and certain people shattered (pun intended). In the hailstorm of all this iOS 4.1 jailbreaking news, jailbreak developer iH8Sn0w has announced that he will be releasing a new version of Sn0wbreeze for Windows (similar to PwnageTool for Mac) which will be based on Limera1n’s bootrom exploit.

Image

iH8sn0w tweeted:
Will be pushing out http://ih8sn0w.com/anditbegins.png a few days after PwnageTool is out. @MuscleNerd can we talk?

The next version of Sn0wbreeze, as with previous versions, creates custom firmware files which allow you to upgrade your iPhone to a new custom firmware without messing with your baseband so you can use Ultrasn0w to unlock the phone and use it with any carrier you like.

It will release after PwnageTool for Mac is out.

------

A few weeks ago it was reported a bug was present in iOS 4.1 which wakes up countries on daylight savings time an hour early. According to ZDnet a patch is being worked on that should be available through the iOS 4.1.1 update soon.

Oh, Apple will probably patch up the new exploit which allows for limera1n. Jailbreakers, you know what to do.

------

Apple has won the trademark for the now utterly ubiquitous phrase, “There’s an app for that”.

Apple filed for the trademark in December 2009, the phrase was first used on January 26, 2009, the trademark request claimed.

Mashable explains the patent — filed in the Advertising, Business and Retail Services, Computer and Software Services and Scientific Services categories – describes itself as:

“..retail store services featuring computer software provided via the Internet and other computer and electronic communication networks; retail store services featuring computer software for use on handheld mobile digital electronic devices and other consumer electronics.”

------

Geohot has just announced that limera1n is out of beta and limera1n RC1b is available for download.

If you had problems jailbreaking your iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPod Touch 3G and the new iPod Touch 4G using limera1n then try it again using the latest version of limera1n as many readers have reported that the new version has fixed the problems they were facing with the previous version (especially iPad users).

limera1n website briefly provided details of the improvements in the new version:

RC1: afc2 support, reliability improvements, no reboot for Cydia, 2kb smaller

RC1b: addresses an install issue, mainly with iPads

afc2 support is necessary for tools like iPhone Browser, DiskAid etc to access the file system and allow the transfer of files such as Winterboard themes, NES ROMs, etc to the iPhone.

Because the “untethered” part of this jailbreak comes from a userland hack from @comex, you should still backup your SHSH hashes for 4.1. Do this by either letting Cydia keep them (“make my life easier”), or using Tiny Umbrella. This way you can always come back to an untethered, jailbreakable 4.1 on your devices after Apple has closed their 4.1 signing window (they’ll close the 4.1 window once they push out their next firmware version). If you fail to do this and ever need to restore to 4.1 again, you can still jailbreak but it will be a tethered JB (you’ll need to connect to your computer to finish the booting process, each and every time).

The simplest way to achieve this is to launch Cydia after jailbreaking your iDevice. It will automatically take a backup of the SHSH blobs.

Sooo basically for someone who is new to this i phone thing.....if you bought a new i phone with iOS 4.1 you can jailbreak it with either limera1n or greenpois0n...but you can't unlock it because ultrasn0w won't work until Apple releases 4.2 and they bring out a new jailbreak and new version of ultrasn0w...

if you have an older version of iOS (like 4.0.1) you can upgrade to 4.1 using tinyumbrella to save your SHSH blobs and preserve your old carrier baseband so that the ultrasn0w can continue to work. Or use a pwnage tool to modify firmware files to do the same thing..

Because geohot stole comex's exploit and brought out his limera1n before greenpois0n (who were apparently working on a different exploit)...they held back the SHAtter exploit so that Apple wouldn't be able to patch both exploits in the realease of 4.2 in November...

Anybody else find this is too much drama for a fuggin phone??

The Chronic Dev-Team has released Greenpois0n, their utility for jailbreaking the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch on iOS 4.1.

After much controversy, the tool has been updated to use the bootrom exploit found by Geohot.

Unfortunately, only a Windows version is currently available; however, a mac version and ipt2g support are coming soon.

You can download Greenpois0n from here.

Update:
From the many comments and our own experience, Greenpois0n does not seem to be installing Cydia at the moment. You may want to hold off until this is fixed.

Update:
RC3 seems to fix the issue for us.

Our tipster claims that the Verizon iPhone has a “brushed aluminum back and a standard black front.” He says that they will come packaged with a bumper. He also points out that there will be a product(RED) version of this phone.

They note that their source is completely unverified so…

(Update: Looks like someone just sent in an iPhone 4 with this backing). More below

Oh, I think I see the Product (RED) version!

Chronic Dev Team hacker MuscleNerd has confirmed that an updated version of PwnageTool for Mac is slated for release this Sunday.

Image

This upcoming version of PwnageTool will be based on Geohot’s Limera1n bootrom exploit. It will allow you to jailbreak your iPhone on iOS 4.1 with a custom firmware that won’t change your phone’s baseband. This will, consequently, allow you to use Ultrasn0w to unlock the phone and use it with a carrier of your choice.

Developer iH8sn0w previously confirmed that Sn0wbreeze 2.1 (think: PwnageTool for Windows) will be pushed out a few days after PwnageTool is released. So, keeping that in mind, the next version of Sn0wbreeze should come some time after Sunday.
