Unfortunately though, I have to use the busted OEM.

Most I could do is wrap them in electrical tape and avoid movement.

Where you got an oem to buy?

Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs was reportedly stopped in an airport in Japan after he attempted to bring Ninja throwing stars onto a plane, and vowed to never visit the country again, according to a Japanese tabloid.

According to Bloomberg, Japan's SPA! Magazine reported that Jobs was the subject of a security scan at Kansai International Airport in July as he was returning home from a family vacation on his own private jet. The executive was allegedly stopped because he had throwing stars in his carry-on luggage.

"Jobs said it wouldn't make sense for a person to try to hijack his own plane, according to the report," the translation reads. "He then told officials he would never visit Japan again, the magazine reported. Apple declined to comment."

Lending some credibility to the story, a spokesperson for the airport did confirm that a passenger traveling on a private jet was stopped at the end of July for carrying "shuriken," which is the Japanese word for throwing stars. The passenger reportedly agreed to throw away the weapons, as the airport does not have separate security policies for flyers on a private jet.

As a multi-billionaire and one of the most famous executives in the world, Jobs' activities in public are often publicized, though reports are typically less mundane than his purported incident in a Japanese airport.

In August, a photo of Jobs was snapped as he left a popular San Francisco, Calif., restaurant, where he couldn't get a seat because he didn't have a reservation. And in March, he and Google CEO Eric Schmidt were spotted drinking coffee together in Palo Alto, Calif.

Apple’s raining on our Ninja fantasies with truth again. According to the PR team, Steve Jobs did not in fact get those Ninja Stars taken from him. Or at least some part of the story isn’t true. According to the Loop:

“Steve did visit Japan this summer for a vacation in Kyoto, but the incidents described at the airport are pure fiction. Steve had a great time and hopes to visit Japan again soon.”

Maybe Jobs got to put those things in his packed luggage so he and Larry Ellison to take out Nick Denton and Eric Schmidt. Also, Apple doesn’t seem to have a problem calling Bloomberg liars lately, no?

With Apple's recent decision to ease off on its third-party app creation tools restrictions, gamers are in for some very cool and interesting developments. At the Korea Games Conference, Epic Games announced that the Unreal Development Kit (UDK) will have the ability to generate iOS games and other applications.

The UDK is freely available and has the ability to churn out incredible looking environments, such as the Epic Citadel tech demo you might have downloaded or at least gazed upon in wonder.

If the gameplay of the final, released version of the Citadel demo is as smooth and playable as what was shown at the most recent Apple press event, there's no doubt we'll see even more amazing things come from what developers can churn out with the UDK.

Does the iPhone’s 3.5-inch screen ever make you wish for something bigger? With 3.7-inch, 4-inch, and 4.3-inch devices all the rage on other platforms these days, do you want Apple to announce a larger form factor for iPhone 5?

At 960×640 they have the pixels to scale, even if it would reduce density to do so. If it wasn’t Retina Display, but was Big Display, would that be better? A larger screen means it’s easier to read, easier to tap buttons, but harder to fit in your pocket (or hand if you’re dainty).

Tell your preference in the poll.

Happy (belated) birthday today to Mac OS X -- yes, the OS itself actually released to the public on March 24, 2001 (which means its actual "birthday," in my mind, isn't until next March), but on September 13, 2000, points out Macworld, Steve gave us the very first peek at the foundation of modern Apple computing at the Apple Expo in Paris. That's ten years ago yesterday -- we never were all that good with remembering birthdays.

Macworld lists out the ten most significant contributions of the OS to the Mac experience, but things like the Time Machine and Spotlight are on there, and of course those weren't introduced until much later. The OS itself was actually announced six days after the year 2000 started, and the Apple Expo announcement was the beta reveal. Steve Jobs had just come back to the company, bringing his NeXT experience with him, and OS X made waves early on for being a Unix-based operating system. The Aqua user interface was the other big feature of the OS right away -- as Jobs said at that first Macworld Expo, "when you saw it you wanted to lick it." Customers found that out immediately: The beta product itself was released in stores for $29.95.

iOS 4.1 is so last week. Along with Wednesday’s announcement of AirPrint came the first iOS 4.2 beta release for registered members of Apple’s iOS developer program. Of the two software updates, iOS 4.2 is arguably the bigger release: not only does it finally bring the features of iOS 4 (and iOS 4.1) to the iPad, but it also finally unifies Apple’s mobile software platform across its devices. Plus it actually brings a couple of new, prominent features along with it.

Macworld has taken a sneak peek inside the next version of iOS and brought you the lowdown on what you can expect when the update hits your device in November.

AirPrint
Image

One of the biggest new features touted by Apple CEO Steve Jobs during his annual song-and-dance in September was the ability to print wirelessly from the iPad. As Apple announced on Wednesday, however, AirPrint will work one of two ways at launch: with a compatible printer from HP (and eventually, we presume, printers from other manufacturers) or with printers shared via your Mac or PC.

Unfortunately, we have neither one of those aforementioned printers nor the requisite software for testing shared printers (it requires Mac OS X 10.6.5) so we can’t regale you with tales of making printouts appear from our iPad as though by magic.

However, we can tell you that the print option appears in Safari, under the Share icon to the right of the Bookmarks button; in Mail, where it lives under the Reply button; and in Photos, where you’ll have to tap the Share button before you get an option to select and print pictures. Tapping print under any of these brings up a popover that asks you to select a printer by searching your network, and a control for selecting the number of copies.

Third-party developers will also be able to build in support for AirPrint into their own applications, finally bringing wireless printing to the masses.

AirPlay
One of the other major features that’s new in iOS 4.2 is support for AirPlay, a new-and-improved version of the AirTunes feature found in the current desktop version of iTunes.
With AirPlay, you’ll be able to stream media—for example, music or video—from an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to any AirPlay-compatible device. Initially, AirPlay will work with only AirPort Express units (for audio) and the new Apple TV (for audio and video), although Apple is licensing the technology to other vendors to allow them to sell AirPlay-compatible products—speakers, receivers, and the like. (iHome is one of the first companies to announce an AirPlay product.)

Whenever you’re listening to music in an AirPlay-enhanced app—for example, the built-in iPod app—under iOS 4.2, you’ll see an AirPlay button. Tap this button, and any AirPlay-compatible devices on the same local network appear in a popover menu. Tap a device, and your media is streamed directly to it. (If you’ve ever used Apple’s Remote app to control iTunes on your computer, the process of choosing an AirPlay destination is similar to using the Remote app’s Speakers menu to choose an AirPort Express for streaming music.)

As the new Apple TV is not yet available, we couldn’t test video streaming—if you choose an AirPort Express as the AirPlay destination from within the iPad’s Videos app, for example, only audio is streamed.

Additional iOS 4.2 features
Notes
After three long years, our national nightmare of Marker Felt is finally over. Settings now has a Notes section which allows you to switch your font to Chalkboard or, happily, Helvetica. It’ll even update all your existing notes to use your new font voice. You can also set your default account for Notes.

Orientation Lock
Like the iPhone before it, the iPad now has a software screen orientation lock when you swipe to the right in the multitasking shelf. Unlike Apple’s smaller devices, you can lock the screen in portrait or landscape orientations. But wait, what about the iPad’s hardware screen orientation lock? Turns out it’s gone, baby, gone—not the switch itself, of course, as that would be impressive for a software update, but it’s now been repurposed as mute switch, as with its iPhone counterpart. At the moment, you can also still hold down the volume down button for a couple seconds to mute the iPad, which is probably a redundant feature that should be excised.

Brightness
Apple also added a brightness slider to the left of the media playback controls, a huge win for those who like surfing their iPads in a dim room, but hate having to navigate all the way into the bowels of Settings to find the control.

Safari
iOS 4.2 brings a couple of small additions to Apple’s Web browser, but they’re nice ones. For one thing, the pages icon in Safari’s toolbar will now show you how many pages you currently have open. And you can also now search text on a page by entering your query in Safari’s search box, and then tapping the entry under the On This Page section at the bottom. You’ll then be able to quickly jump from result to result in the page, with Safari highlighting in yellow all the instances of the term, just like on your Mac or PC.

Adobe has announced and released a preview of Flash Player 'Square' which adds 64-bit support for Windows, Mac, and Linux; as well as, support for Internet Explorer 9 Beta.

Flash Player “Square” has been enhanced to directly support the hardware-accelerated graphics capabilities in the newest version of IE. Flash Player “Square” leverages the new GPU support available with Internet Explorer 9 Beta to deliver a faster and more responsive user experience. In our internal testing, we’ve seen significant improvements in Flash Player graphics performance – exceeding 35% in Internet Explorer 9 Beta compared to Flash Player running in previous versions of IE.

Today we’re also sharing a refresh of the Linux 64-bit version of Flash Player together with the first preview of both the 64-bit Windows and Mac versions. If you’re using a 64-bit browser, I encourage you to install a 64-bit version of Flash Player and give it try. Those using the previous 64-bit version of Flash Player for Linux should find this new version even faster and more reliable.

Steve Jobs has reportedly responded to another email, hinting that the white iPhone 4 will arrive by Christmas.

iDB reader Nathan emailed Steve Jobs...

-----
Hello Steve, My name is Nathan, I’m a high school student from San Bernardino. I also happen to be one of your biggest fan and a total Apple fanboy and proud to be :)
I’ve been saving up money to buy the new iphone 4. I want the white one but Apple said it won’t be available until later this year. I know you must be asked this question hundreds of times a day but do you think we can expect to get the white iphone for xmas?
I hope you can answer. Thank you Steve.

Christmas is later this year.

It'll depend on which firmware it's running and which iPhone it is. If it's a 3G, 3GS on 3.1.2 to 4.0.1 or a 4 on 4.0 or 4.0.1 then the combination of jailbreakme.com & ultrasn0w should be adequate

We have some good news for folks who want to jailbreak iOS 4.1 that was released by Apple a week back.

iH8sn0w, developer of Sn0wbreeze, which is the Windows version of the PwnageTool - popular jailbreaking tool is planning to release Sn0wbreeze 2.0 for iOS 4.1.

DinoD7 has published a video of jailbroken iPhone to prove that is is possible to jailbreak iOS 4.1 using the new version of Sn0wbreeze.

It looks like Sn0wbreeze 2.0 will jailbreak iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 2G MC Model, iPhone 3GS with older bootrom and iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3rd generation with newer bootrom if it's still on iPhone 3.1.2. You can use F0recast to find out whether your iPhone 3GS has an older or newer bootrom.

Sn0wbreeze 2.0 won’t be able to jailbreak iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4G as of now but iH8sn0w will add support for the new iDevices as soon as Chronic Dev Team releases the SHAtter jailbreak.

Meanwhile, Chronic Dev team has also provided progress update on the SHAtter jailbreak, which should be able to jailbreak all existing iOS devices for life.

Many people in the comments are asking for a progress update. Any kind of update that we could actually give would be too technical for anyone to understand anyway, not to mention potentially reveal the exploit. Just know that things are going swimmingly and we are working as hard as we can.

------

iLounge has discovered how to access Apple's secret 'iTerm' diagnostic mode and Disk Mode on the new iPod Nano 6G.

First, the nano needs to be reset by holding down the sleep and volume down buttons until the Apple logo appears. Holding down both volume buttons during the reset enables Disk Mode, while holding down all three buttons will start up the iPod nano in Diagnostic Mode, briefly flashing the message "iTerm: iPod Display Console" on screen. The menu then identifies the new nano as "N20 Snowfox," changed from the "N33 GreatDane" designation of the fifth-generation iPod nano.

The iTerm menu lets you test the power, audio, remote, TV out, LCD, USB, FM radio, accelerometer and touch screen functions.

Disk mode is used to make the iPod appear as an external drive when connected to the computer.

Here are some new features in iOS 4.2 for iPhone that we came across:

Assign text message tone to individual contacts:

Enhanced sound preferences:

FaceTime shortcut from Messages app:

New Voice Memos icon:

New App installing/deleting and Mail account editing restrictions:

Liking and Disliking YouTube videos:

Alerts get silvery shadows:

It looks like Apple’s got another exploit on their hands and that’s the ability for users to install cracked apps on non-jailbroken devices. Supposedly an app called “IPA God” will be released in the near future that takes advantage of iOS 4.1 and 4.2 (beta currently) devices to allow cracked app installations.

------

According to Network World (via AppAdvice) Apple issued a cease and desist letter to Newsday regarding their iPad app commercial. The commercial essentially showed how the iPad can’t completely replace newspapers as the screen will shatter when your hit flies with it. Long story short, Apple doesn’t want their iPad’s glass getting shattered as a newspaper app commercial.

Pod2G, the hacker who discovered the upcoming SHAtter jailbreak, has announced that he is no longer part of the Chronic Dev Team.

From now on, I'm not affiliated with chronic dev team anymore. I'm now working independently.

This is not a big deal for final users at all, as I gave details of my SHAtter exploit to both chronic and iphone dev teams !

To clarify: I'm an exploit maker, not a jailbreak tool developer. SHAtter is my 3rd bootrom exploit (24Kpwn was a team effort tho).

We aren't exactly sure what caused the separation; however, as he noted about this should not affect end-users looking to jailbreak.

Covert, a new tweak by chpwn, brings private browsing to MobileSafari

Enable by tapping the Tabs button on Safari and then tap the button, 'Private Browsing'. The UI will change color to indicate private browsing is enabled.

This modification will not add any icons to your home screen.

You can download Covert free from the BigBoss Cydia repository.

Say what you like about Apple, but when push comes to shove part of the reason for its success is that at heart, consumers love their Macs.

The table shows us the results of an American Customer Satisfaction Index survey which showed Apple totaled 78 out of 100 for the past 12 months, up 3 points on 2009. The company has hit a new high in customer satisfaction.

To be fair, competitors appear to have ramped up their game, PC satisfaction has increased across the board, but right now consumer are happier than they’ve ever been with their computers.

“The biggest asset Apple has had for a long time is its commitment to innovation,” said David VanAmburg, managing director of ACSI

HP, Dell, Acer and other PC makers also achieved higher ratings this year than they did in 2009: They all tied with a satisfaction rating of 77.

I want a Mac so bad right about now (not really related to the below article)

iPhone Dev Team wrote:We’ve released a beta version of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.

IF YOU USE THE ULTRASN0W UNLOCK, PLEASE WAIT FOR PWNAGETOOL TO SUPPORT 4.1. DO NOT USE REDSN0W. That’s because to use redsn0w at 4.1, you need to already have updated to official 4.1 from Apple. If you do that, you lose the ultrasn0w unlock (possibly forever).

The Windows version needs further testing, so for now this is available only for Mac OS X x86. The Windows version will come as soon as the bugs are ironed out.

Note: if you have an “MC” model of the ipt2g, your 4.1 jailbreak will be tethered…sorry! (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)

Launch the beta redsn0w 0.9.6b1
Select your stock 4.1 or 4.0 ipsw (you’ve already used this to update your device to 4.1 or 4.0)
Select “Install Cydia” and any of the other options shown above, then click “Next”. Use DFU mode to install the jailbreak.
Note: If you choose to “Enable battery percentage”, you actually toggle that off and on via Settings->General->Usage.

Here’s news for all you socialites out there — it appears Apple and Facebook chatted for over a year before the launch of Ping, and the talks gave us … nothing.

Recall when Apple boss Steve Jobs says Facebook demanded “onerous” terms?

Well, shoot across to this report from Dan Frommer who tells us that a deal still hasn’t been reached with old FB, not even fo’ Facebook Connect for all you Pingsters out there — and that’s after 18 months of pre-launch talks.

“From what we hear, this is the new sound of working with Facebook, which is now big enough — and has such important data — that it knows it’s one of the most important companies in Silicon Valley,” Frommer tells us.

Indeed, it looks like All your data are belongs to us Facebook has morphed into some version of mid to late 90′s MSFT, that report explains.

“while Apple and Facebook have a long history — Apple was Facebook’s first big sponsor, via its Apple Students group — the current relationship status is more like “it’s complicated,” to put it in Facebook terms.”
