‘I wanted to help kill my wife’
By STACY MOORE Thursday, September 2 2010
ASKED why he stabbed his wife in her neck and slashed her arm,man yesterday told a San Fernando magistrate that after his wife told him she wanted to commit suicide, he decided to help her in the act.a Guyanese born
First Court Magistrate Annette McKenzie stared in disbelief at the accused Gafoor Abdool, 32, who appeared before her charged with maliciously wounding his wife Reshma Abdool, 23.
The court heard from prosecutor Sgt Kumar Ramlochan, that at about 11 am on August 28, Abdool armed with a knife called out to Reshma at their Dumfries Road, La Romaine home. An argument, the court was told, began and Abdool stabbed Reshma in her neck and left arm.
Abdool ran out of the house while Reshma screamed for help.
She was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital where she was treated. Abdool was arrested and taken into custody, the police court prosecutor related.
Shown the medical report by Sgt Ramlochan, Abdool glanced at it and said, “Sir, I can’t read.” The medical report was then tendered into evidence.
As she read the medical report, Magistrate McKenzie asked court prosecutor Sgt Kumar Ramlochan why the investigator decided to charge the accused with malicious wounding rather than attempted murder.
“Why was the charge of attempted murder not laid but instead the charge of malicious wounding? The medical report clearly states that the victim sustained puncture wounds to the neck. This is attempted murder,” Magistrate McKenzie stated.
Turning to Abdool, Magistrate McKenzie said: “You are lucky that the police only charged you for malicious wounding, sir. You are a lucky man, sir. Do you have anything to say?”
Abdool told the magistrate that his wife wanted to commit suicide and he decided to assist her in the act by sticking her in the throat with a knife. “Four years we have been together and last week she ran off with a man and we sat down to talk about it at home when she took a knife and said she was going to cut her throat. So I tell myself, ‘if she wants to do that, I will help her’,” Abdool said.
Magistrate McKenzie listened in stunned silence. Listening in the public gallery of the courtroom was Mrs Abdool, her neck covered with bandages and her left arm in a cast and supported by a sling.
Asked if he had anything further to state, Abdool smiled and muttered: “I have nothing else to say. This is my first time before the court.” The magistrate then sentenced Abdool to 730 days imprisonment and ordered police to take Abdool out of her court.
