I think it has no place in the top tiers and leagues of football. Groundsmanship has reached such a level internationally that they take pride in prepping, watering, mowing their fields to be at such a great level...why then bring plastic pitches?

Having said that, thats no reason why tottenham should lose to a lowly side like that then have Redknapp blame it on the field. A top side should be adaptable to the surroundings and let their brand of football. Once the field does not affect ground passes or the bounce of the ball i see no reason why the pitch should be blamed for their defeat.

Theres good turf and then there is great turf.

Ive trained and played sports on astroturf already and it does make a difference. Even the high-quality imitation grass turf that you can wear cleats on still doesn't have the same feel as grass.

But It should not be banned.

Football season is from August to March, and that is right through Winter. Playing in the snow on grass is a lot worse than playing on snow on Turf. At least the maintainence costs to keep the ground proper for play is just as much as a regular field.

So given the context with the Swiss team, I dont give them wrong. Keep the pitch Turf because playing on Mud/snow/ice for half the year is not fun.
