pc techs- hard drive help

Postby someone904 » April 23rd, 2010, 8:18 pm

hi there, need some pc help.
what happened was i was digging up in my pc one day, and well.....the hard drive was not screwed down. so while moving around, the circuit board below the hard drive sparked off on the case, now it tries to come on, but keeps restarting.as far as i can see, only one component has burned off, trying to solder one back on might need someone with experience, or was thinking to change out the board with another and see if that works. basically all my data is on it, any advice would be appreciated. thanks
the drive is an ide maxtor 3.5 series. 40 gig i think

what??? you mean the front panel switchboard? I doubt its that, just wire in a switch to your motherboard, if you are still getting the same problem, it very likely the motherboard. also could be the harddrive BTW

Cored?

That board is the hard disk controller. Find the drive's model number and put it up. Someone need to do you a favour if they have the same model and swap theirs with yours for you to get back your data. Also check the technician recommended. PC techs usually have tons of dead drives lying around for this purpose.

The S.M.A.R.T error is a good indication that something wrong with the drive. Should change it asap to avoid data loss. Had bought a Maxtor 500GB last year and got a SMART error upon booting, turns out the drive almost was dead. Changed under warranty. :D

Same error i got with mine. Get it replaced fast.

Or for good measure you can download a free software called HDTune and run a scan on it. Is a very good utility for hard drive diagnostics.
