You may just simply need to set the partition as "active."

If you can connect the drive to another computer, you can do this from within the Disk Management console in Windows.

Otherwise you can use one of those DOS or Linux utilities like FDISK.

3.5v6 wrote:only thing nobody mentioned is, HDD Sector Zero (Master Boot Sector) is damaged. no matter how many times you format and reinstall it will not make any difference.

change the HDD and reinstall your windows and your problem will solve.

other cheap option to try...boot your windows and run a hard disk master boot repair utility...u can download it from internet free...

once your master boot sector is damaged, anytime you reformat the HDD you will face the same issue.
it seems as though you did not read or understand me properly.

the hard drive is fine...it works fine..the HDD i using is my testing HDD. i put it inside my testing machine..remove all partitions do a full format and install xp and it works....

no HDD errors or such when i unplug it and plug it back in and boot up...it works....

the thing is when i install xp on the customer pc it works ....i shut down and unplug it .....plug it back in boot up and i get disc boot failure....

it wants to have the xp disc in the drive although it not going to copy files from it...it just wants it there in order to boot up normally...

and who says partitioning and formatting doesnt affect a bad MBR??

the purpose of partitioning and formatting is getting the drive readyfor the MBR and to hold files.

dude....the MBR is kinda like an index of the HDD....when you do a quick format what you think you erasing..?? the MBR...all the files are actually still on the HDD...

thats why a full format takes so damn long..it removes the MBR and also removes all data from the HDD....

and by the way, a full format also scans the drive for any bad sectors so if "sector zero" was damaged it would label it as damaged and allocate a new sector of the drive to be sector zero- where data can actually start to be saved from and start working from there...

you got problem in your bios settings man, cause if you said you reinstalled a couple of times and nothing then think about it, there is one thing that isn't changing each time you reinstall nd thats ur bios..

these bios comes with it's default settings to work with the recovery partition that was shipped with the pc.. meaning you have to use the recovery partition or it will not work otherwise, after you reset the bios you hav to alter it to suite you and if you cannot alter it then you need to flash the bios nd get a firmware update for your bios..
