tried the "Fn + F8" Screen toggle keys no result.

Also tried the F8 Boot in VGA mode.

It displays the XP welcome screen then goes black after that ?

Not sure what is happening after the welcome screen

Greypatch, this happened to mine when I used a projector by a client. Screen blank. apparently something got screwed up on the motherboard and dell replaced it under warranty.

Boot from the os cd , click repair and then repair your boot files
