tyre treadwear for sss

to the SS owners and fellas running the dunlop sport maxx tyres, i'm currently doing 15,000 km and have rotated the tyres once already. upon close inspection today i find the treads have worn considerably. i'd say they have no more than 7000km left before i consider them unsafe. have you all noticed this same fast treadwear? i noticed the rating is 240 so perhaps this lifespan is correct. also, when it's time to change the tyres, any recommendations as to what brand/model/size to choose, without veering too much from the recommended specs?

I am currently looking at ordering in some Continental ContiSportContact 2 from tire rack as its very difficult to get the OEM size locally and i think the continetal is an amazing road tire. I rather not change the tire size.

Folks, keep in mind that treadwear isn't totally "standard" across manufacturers. You may find that a listed lower treadwear tyre in one brand will outlast another higher rated one on another brand....

..e.g. The HTRZII's on my Suby (220 Tread), have outlasted the Sportmaxx by far Tread depth loss for the same mileage).

If it were me, I'd probably look at another set of Sportmaxx's, but in 205/50, or maybe T1R's.....both available locally.

....but definitely.....DEFINITELY....a set of Direzza Sport Z1's (not to be confused with the duncrapt DZ101). Lovely tyre, so much grip wet and dry.

You'll never find any locally though



Sad to think that most folks will end up putting some really crappy tyres (The number of SSS's I've seen running nexens is staggering ) on a great handling car

Yup the conti is a great tyre, only wish they had our size in the improved contact sport 3.

Yes you are right about the treadwear differences across the brands.

Can you even get the OEM size locally?

you can get the 205/45R16 Sumitomos for $500 for one. THat's what I'm using on my SS

changed out the dunlops to michelin pilot primacy 240 AA A 195/50R16 on the SS.
the dunlops lasted 12000km. got the michelins in marabella at the time. dont know if they still have. Great grip on the michelins, feedback from the road good. excellent at the limit, does not brake away suddenly.

The ZII is pretty nifty......I like them (using them right now), but they aren't a "wow" tyre in terms of grip.

Ditto on the 205/45's....those might be the best bet in terms of matching the original diameter.......

ive used them and fine them to be a great tire ... but very limited sizes in 15"

i ran those before in the uk i found them to be very good tires as you can predict the moment they are gonna lose grip and they lose it gradually i dont like tires with loads of grip then suddenly they lose all grip and u end up in bad situation. i want to try something from the pirrelli range when the time comes although i intend to go up to 17" wheels hopefully some nice light ones been looking at oz super leggeras

Dude.......

The OE tyres on the SSS are not runflats.

They are the SportMaxx-A. The SportMaxx that tyreclinic sells actually is a slightly better compound to the OE tyre.

You can try the ZII's......it's a nice bang for the buck tyre IMHO. Not fantastic, but good overall.

Nope.

Neither are the stock / OEM tyres on your Swift Sport.

Laughlin and De Gannes has some Kumho Ecsta SPT Runflats last I checked!

Keep in mind that with run flats, it's advisable to run a TPMS system as it'll be hard [u]visually[/i]if you're running low pressure on a given tyre. Plus, they have stiffer sidewalls most times, which will result in a harder ride.

Great tyre, but you can get better, for less (e.g. importing Sport Z1's might run you about 2/3 or 3/4 the price of the GS-D3's locally.....and their class rating outperforms the GS-D3 on Tirerack).

I don't have run flats though, but bought it for peace of mind since the sss doesn't come with a spare. i'd like to know my tyre is CURRENTLY losing pressure than to see it when it's too late. so if anyone is interested in TPMS, i'd recommend this product.

Yes, it is an unfair comparison That's what I meant by "class rating" i.e. the Z1 is one level higher than the F1's (should have used the word "exceeds" instead of "outperforms").

One correction though, the scores that are given from Tire Rack tests (not the surveys) can be comparitive across classes...i.e. ....across, EPS, MPS, UHPS categories (send them an email if you don't believe me).

E.g. the Sport Z1 scores better traction in dry than the GSD3, less than the GSd3 in the wet, better ride quality and higher overall etc.

Ultimately though..... IMHO..we have quite a while to wait before anyone buys Sport Z1's, GSD3's, or even RE-11's for their SSS.

I'd recommend 215/40 17's.....fits better with wider wheels...and it's a size that, if memory serves, TMSquare and Monster/SuzukiSport use on their cars.

I ran the 215/40 Ecstas on my Konigs (17x7 - +35 or +38 offset I think) with no issues.
