Signs of a new iPhone hardware model being tested online and Apple's interest in updating the handset's built-in Maps application have been revealed.

A handset identifying itself as "iPhone 3,1" was tracked by PinchMedia in its application iBART for San Francisco public transportation. According to MacRumors, iPhone 3,1 appeared in its usage logs during November.

The reference could signify a new iPhone model with major hardware changes, as Apple only changes the first number in a product's identifier string when it receives a significant upgrade. The current iPhone 3GS carries the identifier iPhone 2,1 while the original iPhone identifies itself as iPhone 1,1, and the iPhone 3G -- which featured minor architectural changes from its predecessor -- is iPhone 1,2.

Apple's use of 3,1 implies major and distinct changes, a practice that it also uses with its Mac lineup. References in software to an iPhone 3,1 have existed for some time, but the alleged use of the unreleased hardware would be a first.

Early this year, signs of iPhone 2,1 began appearing online. That hardware was eventually released months later, in June, as the iPhone 3GS.

Apple has released all of its iPhone updates in the summer. Recent rumors have suggested that the company could release a Verizon-capable phone in 2010.

Also revealed this weekend was a new job listing from Apple for a software engineer to work on the iPhone Maps application. The listing seeks a full-time employee to work in Cupertino, Calif., on the software.

"The iPhone has revolutionized the mobile industry and has changed people's lives and we want to continue to do so," the listing reads. "We want to take Maps to the next level, rethink how users use Maps and change the way people find things. We want to do this in a seamless, highly interactive and enjoyable way. We've only just started."

The description is particularly interesting because Apple quietly purchased a Google Maps competitor, Placebase, this summer. The worldwide mapping company offered products that would aggregate data on subjects such as demographics, home sales, crime, mortgage lending, school performance and more.

In addition, the existing Maps application has been a point of contention between Apple and Google. Apple rejected the Google Latitude app because it was reportedly thought the software would only be confused with the default Maps application. Google instead released a Web-based version of the software.

Google has added additional functionality to its own Android-powered handsets with Google Maps Navigation, a free turn-by-turn voice guidance system part of the new Motorola Droid. Google has said it would like to bring the software to the iPhone, if Apple approves.

Earlier this month, AppleInsider revealed that Apple is looking to higher an in-house game developer to create original content for the iPhone and iPod touch. To date, Apple has only released one first-party game for the iPhone, Texas Hold'em. The job listing could signify that the handset maker is looking to create more of its own games.

While rumors of a possible Verizon-compatible iPhone in 2010 persist, one analyst has predicted that Apple will instead bring the iPhone to another GSM-based carrier in the U.S.: T-Mobile.

In a note to investors released this week, Doug Reid of Thomas Weisel Partners said his firm believes that T-Mobile, and not Verizon, will be the beneficiary when Apple's exclusive agreement with AT&T expires next year. AT&T has likely realized this, he said, and has changed its advertising focus accordingly to be less focused on the iPhone.

"AT&T advertising in the United States has in recent weeks clearly shifted away from iPhone as the carrier likely readies itself to lose exclusivity in the United States (to T-Mobile and not to VZ, we believe) while VZ ads promoting Droid and other anti-iPhone devices appear to have intensified markedly," Reid said.

AT&T's exclusive contract with Apple for the iPhone is due to expire in 2010. While earlier this year there were reports that the wireless carrier was pushing to extend the agreement through 2011, those rumors have since cooled.

While the iPhone in its current iteration is compatible with T-Mobile's network, it is not capable of connecting to its high-speed 3G network, which operates on a unique 1700MHz spectrum. The iPhone is currently compatible with UMTS/HSDPA 3G connections at the frequencies 850MHz, 1900MHz and 2100MHz. It would be necessary, therefore, for Apple to build a new hardware model that supports T-Mobile's 3G frequency.

Those changes, though, are relatively minor compared to what would be necessary to make the iPhone compatible with Verizon's CDMA network -- a technology that, unlike the GSM network of AT&T and T-Mobile, is not widely used abroad. Recent rumors have suggested Apple could enter a deal with chip maker Qualcomm. While Qualcomm plans to have a dual-mode chip that would allow connection to both AT&T and Verizon available in 2010, some have said the new chip would be too cost prohibitive for Apple to adopt so soon.

AT&T's advertisements featuring actor Luke Wilson have focused on coverage area and network performance, rather than handsets. Apple recently, however, did join the discussion with a pair of ads that highlight the ability of the iPhone to handle calls and data at the same time -- a capability available on AT&T's network, but not from competitor Verizon.

Thomas Weisel Partners have set a price target of $245 for AAPL stock. They expect that 8.2 million iPhones will be sold in the December quarter, along with 20.45 million iPods and 3.06 million Macs. If those numbers prove accurate, it would top Apple's September 2009 quarter -- its best ever -- when the company sold 3 million Macs and 7.4 million iPhones to earn $1.67 billion in profit.

this might have something to do with that

A survey of users of the four major cell phone providers in the U.S. has ranked AT&T, the exclusive carrier of Apple’s iPhone, last in terms of customer satisfaction.

Consumer Reports surveyed more than 50,000 readers in 26 U.S. cities, asking about carriers in a number of different categories related to service and customer support. In 19 of those cities, AT&T ranked worst.

Overall, AT&T came in fourth place with a total score of 66. It ranked worst in voice service, and average for messaging and Web/e-mail. Customer service on the phone and via Web ranked poorly, as did staff knowledge and whether the customer’s issue was resolved.

Coming in first was Verizon, which ranked highly across all categories: voice, messaging, Web/e-mail, and customer service. Verizon had an overall reader score of 75.

In second place was T-Mobile. Though customers feel the nation’s smallest wireless carrier has decidedly average service, the customer support was found to be superior. It earned an overall score of 70.

Sprint came in third with a score of 67, with average service and sub-par customer support, particularly in the area of issue resolution.

The survey is not the only that has found customer satisfaction with AT&T to be relatively poor. In September, another survey found a significant decline in brand perception for AT&T after the carrier faced intense scrutiny over the quality of its network following the launch of the iPhone 3GS. That study found that AT&T lagged well behind competitor Verizon in terms of consumer perception.

AT&T’s issues prompted the company to launch an aggressive public relations campaign in which the carrier publicly acknowledged customer complaints and promised to address them.

AT&T came under scrutiny again in October, this time directly from competitor Verizon, which launched a series of ads mocking the iPhone’s “There’s an app for thatâ€

iPhone Video Calls

Fring was the first to bring VoIP calls to the iPhone, and it looks like it's now finally done the same for video calling -- sort of.

While it obviously can't do much to change the camera placement on the iPhone, the latest version of the app will at least let iPhone users (and iPod touch users, for that matter) see the person on the other end, and Fring says it'll add two-way video calling whenever "a front camera is placed on these." As with the company's app for Nokia devices, you'll also be able to make video calls to Skype users, but you'll have to make sure you're in the vicinity of a WiFi hotspot, as this one doesn't support calls on 3G.

Dragon Naturally Speaking iPhone App

Dragon Naturally Speaking, a very popular application for PC / Mac that lets you use the microphone to write words by using the "speech recognition", will be released soon in the AppStore in a version optimized for iPhone. The following is a video demonstration:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-J66AA8TBbQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed>

The program for the iPhone will capture a clip of about 20 seconds and turn everything that is said to text. Then you can send your dictation via email or SMS.

^^that reall!!!!! mad. Cant wait for it.

ADRENALINE KID, did you update using iTunes since 3.0? If you did and updated to 3.1 and/or 3.1.2 those files are of NO use to u. Those files are only applicable to the old baseband.
What you will have to do is use iTunes get the LATEST firmware FROM iTUNES. Then you would have to use blackra1n ro jailbreak 1st and THEN use blacksn0w to unlock.
Anymore info PM me k?

sexyicon, ent! they might need some addon for trini accent
And sadly now iSip, that is impossible. Not because of iSip but MagicJack changed the way they handle their setup. The latest update completely block you out from obtaining your SIP info. :(
I checked it up recently (around september) and no new MagicJack f/w was released since and i dont think any dev's were working on it either.

According to the developers of Sentenza their application compile your project into a file IPA, it can then drag into iTunes and sync your iPhone or iPod Touch. However there have been some appliances with not jaibreaked devices with firmware 2.2.1, the application did not appear on the screen. Sentenza is optimized for firmware 3.X

Full version of Sentenza is available for $20, in short it is a simple way to create mini-Web sites optimized for iPhone, with the ability to set an icon, a splash screen and more.

MiKandi adults App Store for Jailbroken iPhone too soon

MiKandi.com is a new sensation available for Android users, MiKandi is App Store free for adults. The developers have managed to not break the rules of Google. Google has rules for Android Market that prevent app devs from incorporating adult content. Due to Android’s open nature you can get pretty much anything you want on your phone. To buy the adult apps, you can access them by visiting MiKandi.com from your Android phone. Adult application developers share the revenue with MiKandi.

The developers behind MiKandi have also stated that they are optimizing the application for other devices are also including our beloved iPhone, however, must be jailbroken.

RedEye Makes Your iPhone a Universal Remote Control

Image

After months of private beta testing, ThinkFlood's RedEye goes on sale today. You control the dock using an iPhone app via Wi-Fi, and it sends out infrared signals to control your AV gear. At $188, it's not crazy expensive, either.

I mean, the Logitech Harmony 900 costs $400, and even the Harmony 700 is $150.

Image

Being touchscreen-based, you can tailor buttons to your lounge room kit, and group multiple devices into single macro "actions". There's also basic use of multi-touch (two finger swipes for volume, for instance), and you can control additional RedEye units that may be setup in different rooms.

Image
The kit works with any iPhone or iPod touch, but doesn't yet support Bluetooth or Bang and Olufsen devices.

I gotta admit, the RedEye actually seems pretty cool. If the price comes down just a teeny bit, it may become a must-have iPhone accessory.

And from cydia....

Smartscreen got some more widgets. I might post some screenshots soon if i get time.

here is another cool tweak

Custom HomeButton

Image
By default the iPhone allows you to set the double clicking of the home button to one of five tasks. You can set it to go to home, search, your phone favorites, camera or the iPod. Sort of limiting don’t you think.

That’s where Custom Home Button comes in. Available for jailbroken iphones via the Touch Mania source (http://cydia.touch-mania.com/) allows you to set the double clicking of your home button to anything your hear desires. You can choose from your App Store applications, Cydia Applications, Web Sites or one of the default actions.

Once installed you’ll see the Custom Home Button settings within your iPhone’s default settings application. Within the settings you can not only configure what happens when you double click the home button but you can toggle the entire application on or off.

ImageImage

One thing to watch out for. If you use Categories to organize your applications you can not set an application that’s inside a Categories folder and your double click home button. It won’t launch. Any application you choose must be visible on the springboard.

I’m not sure why this feature isn’t built into the iPhone by default. Limiting the function to only five actions seems restrictive to me. But if you’re jailbroken this app. solves the limitation.

Back in the day when I used GPRS on my old Nokia 5100/6230 calls were able to come through while using it. So I shouldn't imagine it being any different with the iPhone.

Use Your Wii Controll On Your iPhone

ZodTTD has modified mame4iphone to support a WiiMote controller via BlueTooth.
Here's the original message from ZodTTD

Hello from ZodTTD

In this video I modified my mame4iphone release (available via my Cydia "Community Source" repo) to support a WiiMote controller via BlueTooth. This was able to be done by using the BTstack daemon which is also available via Cydia.

Note that I'm using an iPhone 3gs. You will need a device that supports BlueTooth such as an iPhone or iPod Touch other than the first gen.

I decided to use the buttons on the WiiMote for the video instead of it's accelerometer. Both are a bit tricky to control. I'm looking forward to getting the PS3 controller working with my emulator releases next.

Want to see the WiiMote implemented in my releases soon? Be sure to leave a comment knowing which releases of mine should get the WiiMote treatment first. :)

Keep an eye out for more cool videos soon too.
So subscribe to my YouTube channel! ;)

Thanks,

Geohot has indicated that he will make the community an untethered jailbreak in exchange for some help...

"at 9AM EST tomorrow, I will be asking for all of your help..if you come through for me, i'll make you an untethered jailbreak. also $1000.00"

"at 9AM EST tomorrow, I need you all to trend something and do something, which will be revealed then..big rewards are in order if this works"

Currently the new iPod touch and the newer iPhone 3GS devices require a tethered jailbreak. Which, especially in the case of the iPhone, make jailbreaking impractical.

Its not clear what assistance Geohot is seeking however previous tweets indicate that he has been looking for "something capable of checking 3 trillion SHA-1 hashes/second for $20,000"

He also mentioned, "i wouldn't feel right with a distributed approach since it has to stay up for months and is commercial for me"

Geohot has requested assistance in winning the DARPA Network Challenge. In exchange he will make the community an untethered jailbreak.

The DARPA Network Challenge is a competition that explores the role the Internet and social networking play in the timely communication, wide-area team-building, and urgent mobilization required to solve broad-scope, time-critical problems.

The challenge is to be the first to submit the locations of 10 moored, 8-foot, red, weather balloons at 10 fixed locations in the continental United States. The balloons will be in readily accessible locations and visible from nearby roads.

"10AM EST today marks the start of a US wide scavenger hunt, for 10 red balloons http://bit.ly/7chum5 #dudeitsaballoon"

"The more people that know, the more of a chance the 10 $1000 prizes will be claimed http://bit.ly/7chum5 #dudeitsaballoon"

"And the more of a chance you get an untethered jailbreak! http://bit.ly/7chum5 #dudeitsaballoon"

"So I need your help to do two things, 1, find big red balloons, and 2, RT and trend this!!! http://bit.ly/7chum5 #dudeitsaballoon"

glad your back up and running. Amazed at how that custom restore worked on your new baseband. I guess its all up to blacksn0w to do the unlocking on that baseband alone.

WRT to your other pc authorization, thats a pain in the ass and i really dont know how u can do it w/o internet because if i remember, when i authorized my other pc, it needed for me to login to the appstore using my credentials :(

The New York Times is reporting that Apple is acquiring Lala, the online digital music streaming service based out of Palo Alto, California.

The value of the deal is still unknown though it is believed that Apple managed to acquire the company at a pretty inexpensive price. Lala Co-founder Bill Nguyen had revealed last month that his company's revenues are less than $10 million and they have close to 100,000 users.

We had written about Lala a few weeks back when Google had partnered with the company in the launch of their online music service. Lala has a catalog of over 8 million songs and the service lets its users stream any song for free the first time. Thereafter users need to purchase the song for 10 cents to be able to stream them multiple times. Lala's unique selling proposition is that the entire music library is in the cloud, making hardware memory redundant.

The acquisition has the potential to change the way iTunes works. We could be moving towards a scenario where the memory space on your iPhone could no longer be a limiting factor to the number of songs and applications you use on the device. Also, syncing files among your various devices becomes a much simpler process when all your information is in the cloud.

However, there are a few challenges that has come in the way that need to be sorted out. Firstly, Lala's partnership with the digital content providers is not transferable to the acquirer. This leaves Apple with only the technology and manpower behind the music service. This being the case, it is unclear what becomes of the "unlimited streaming" of songs available to the existing customers. This also affects other partnerships that Lala has entered into with Google and Facebook.

While Google lets its search engine visitors to stream music from Lala before making a purchase, Facebook allows people to gift digital songs to their friends via the service. In a scenario where Lala ceases to hold the rights to the songs, these partnerships may well fall into trouble. However, it is very likely that Apple renegotiates the agreements with the digital content providers. With iTunes holding close to 70% of the digital music sale market in the US, Apple's clout in the business is pretty huge.

While the future definitely looks exciting, for iPhone users, it may practically however boil down to how well the network carriers are able to offer music streaming to the millions of subscribers. If that does not happen well enough, it will not be long before users get back to the more conventional of storing music on their own gadgets.

Without exclusivity of those big, hot, red balls you get NOTHING. Go ask M.I.T for your untethered jailbreak.

Google has added a What's Nearby feature to Maps which will display the 10 closest places to you.

Today we're announcing "What's Nearby" for Google Maps on Android 1.6+ devices, available as an update from Android Market. To use the feature just long press anywhere on the map, and we'll return a list of the 10 closest places, including restaurants, shops and other points of interest. It's a simple answer to a simple question, finally.

If you visit google.com from your iPhone or Android device in a few weeks, clicking "Near me now" will deliver the same experience

Hopefully, this feature will eventually make its way to the native iPhone app as well.

I suggest WinSCP. When you download it go to

Code: Select all

/private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music

& the song files will be the folders in there. They will have names like HFGD.mp3 but should be normal once imported into iTunes.

Great info

You can also use iPhone Explorer if you dont wanna SSH.

SRASC, i have an idea, we should create a post that includes all the important file paths like that one and say photos that have been synced, etc.

That would be a real help out.

Ok. Here are some others.

Applications

Code: Select all

/private/var/mobile/Applications

AppLinks from Cydia would make this an easier directory to navigate

Camera Roll

Code: Select all

/private/var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE

Cycorder Recorded Videos (iPhone 2G & 3G)

Code: Select all

/private/var/mobile/Media/Videos

Downloads (e.g. install0us)

Code: Select all

/private/var/mobile/Media/Downloads

Roms for emulators:

Code: Select all

/var/mobile/Media/ROMs

Downloads (Safari Downloader)

Code: Select all

/var/mobile/Library/Downloads

Ringtones

Code: Select all

/var/stash/Rigntones

or

Code: Select all

/Library/Ringtones

ohh i like applinks :) that would help out a lot for GoodReader and Quickoffice.

I see that it creates a location in:

Code: Select all

/var/mobile/AppLinks

^_^ thanks much man.

By chance u happen to know the location of photos that are synced to the iphone?
and messages and the contacts list?

Not in a rush :)

I think the synced Photos are just there by thumbnail files, much like iPods (without the Full Resolution option enabled).
No clue where the Messages & Contact Lists are, though I think the Contact List setup maybe the same as the Photos.
