So I'm looking for a 70-200mm for my canon.
On a budget of $1k CDN.
I've narrowed it down to the
Sigma 70-200mm f2.8

Image

and
Canon's 70-200mm f4

Image

I'll use it for mostly motorsport photography and some sport (football) as well.

Any thoughts advice.
Thanks

Does the f/4 have IS (not seeing the pictures as I behind firewall). Also, do you have a full frame camera? Personally, I would suggest 300mm for what you looking to do if you have full frame. 200mm seems fine for a crop sensor camera. If you are shooting handheld, the IS canon lens is a no brainer (but I doubt it is IS for that price). Don't worry about the f/2.8. Most lenses are not that sharp untill hey are stopped down to around f/5.6 to their sharpest (but slower) f/8-f/11. Canon lenses AF are quite quick, and what you gain in fast shutter speed with the sigma, you might lose out on with slow AF.

My personal choice is that I only own canon and nikon lenses for my SLR's. I don't trust third party manufacturers, but that is just me. Check reviews, and KEH.com and the guys at phototrini.com. I got all my new canon gear at phototrini.com (Scullman's site).

Ok, then, forget what I said about 300mm. 200 will work fine. As a matter of fact, I

Check reviews of the sigma's AF compared to the canon's. That would be my deciding factor if sports is the subject. I am sure the canon will come out on top. If this was for wildlife, I would go with the sigma for the f/2.8.

i mostly use it for motorsport events during the day time so it works pretty good...never used it in the night for anything....id recommend the canon but if u wanna wait out and save up a little...get the f/2.8

Maserati, from the reviews I read some months ago, the Sigma is just as good all-round as the Canon f/2.8.

f/4 lenses are all well and good for bright sunlit sports, but once you have an overcast day, or start heading into dusk, you'll appreciate the benefits of the larger aperture of the Sigma.

I own a Canon 70-200 f/4L and it is an incredible lens, but having used a few Canon 70-200 f2.8L's (and pretty much any high-end f/2.8 lens for that matter), it's not a difficult decision to make to go for the larger aperture.

However, and it's a big HOWEVER! Canon L lenses typically do not depreciate, once well-maintained.

Sharpness at f/5.6-f/11 IMO is irrelevant, as you intend to shoot subjects in motion, where shutter speed and light sensitivity would be your priorities.

Something to bear in mind is that your flash (whether pop-up or hotshoe) has a much further effective range at f/2.8 than at f/4, and flash freezes motion.

Great photos . WOW.

I am looking to buy a new camera.
Can anyone PM me their opinion on the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 I am looking for a nice camera that does clean crisp shots. For family and general life shooting. Any advice will be appreciated.

Ok camera, but for that price you could buy a Nikon D40. Why not go SLR and done? D40 with a sb400 flash and the 35mm f/1.8 DX lens is all you need for what you want to do, and what I use 90% of the time.

I have been seeing that it is discontinued, but it is still widely avalible and going cheap. Far superior to the sony you are looking at.
