some vehicles come with filter that is located behind the glove compartment that needs to be cleaned,i believed it`s washable, others don`t come with filter but developed some kind of fungust in the system that emits a smell this can be ellimated with something called ac fresh it`s a spray in a tin that has to be turned on and left in vehicle with ac running for alittle while, this can be purchased from many ac dealers and auto parts place,i hope this help.

sometimes even with a clean filter, the moisture on the condenser can promote the growth of mold and fungus that can give a funky smell...my sis replaced her filter int he fielder once and it still smelled like old wet clothes till we disinfected the system...here's what u do

remove a/c filter if ur vehicle has one and put on ur blower and put the fan to the highest setting....u can do with with the windows up or down, it doesn't matter, but if they're up, make sure nobody/no pets etc are inside the vehicle

set the vent to pull air from outside

lift the wipers and spray Lysol disinfectant aerosol spray (which fragrance depends on you but u mostly buying it for the disinfectant properties anyway) on the little vents below the wipers (this is where the blower pulls air when u set the vent to pull from the outside)

let it settle and run through the system for about 5mins, then repeat the process as many times as u think u need, but when you're done, let it blow out for about 15mins, then replace filter and voila!

Worldwide Trading (663-1917) has a Wynn's product that removes odours from the a/c system.

I've seen a product called "A/C Fresh" that gives the system that "new car" scent which is real nice, but I dunno if it's a Wynn's product or not...heard it works well too, but I dunno if it just refreshes the system or disinfects it.

But a Bounce sheet by the inlet to the A/C system... car smells like freshly washed clothes after that!

I can vouch for the method given by Hook above.

Spray ammonia/window cleaner in the air intake vent (try to find where the air is sucked in) by the bottom of the windshield with the A/C on, recirculation OFF, high speed blower.

The ammonia evaporates into the air when you spray, then condenses onto the aircondition evaporator fins and kills the mould which is what gives off the smell.

I've done this many times in my car with success.

To help this problem in future, press the A/C button to switch off the A/C (keep the blower running) about a minute before you turn off the car. This dries off the moisture on the evaporator fins and helps keep the mould from forming.

^^^ I wanted to try that eh, but was worried the car would smell like ammonia and I dunno the ammonia mist would affect the plastic vents etc. so I went with the Lysol
