Advice on accident *new police policy*

Postby jhonnieblue » April 29th, 2009, 6:39 pm

hey, i just wanted to hear if anyone got into a situation like this before,

i just got into a fender bender by point lisas there, it was clearly my fault,
the damage was to the other car, a corolla nze s model, bumper damage and broken light...no damage on my van at all

thing is i knwo all the thing to do , make a report etc.

however when we went to the police station in couva the police there ( not in any bad way) told us that there is a new method to reporting accidents...and apparently it may lead to one or both parties involved getting charged for the accident.
now iv'e never heard about this before and he really advised us to get an estimate seeing as it was only the ladies vehicle damaged. ill try to upload pics to show the damage

but what course of action do i take now, no report to the police means that i cant claim on insurance, if so then whats the point, seeing as how i can be charge for something as minor as a fender bender....

btw it would be helpful if anyone knows where i could source a right back light for NZE model 2006-2007 (was a PCE)

the possibility of one or both parties being charged has always existed. That is nothing new. All car accidents carry that risk.

From my understanding, they are simply trying to avoid taking the report on an accident that might easier be solved without insurance and other trappings.

I'm putting it nicely of course.

If you are comfortable with fixing the car on your own, by all means do so.
If not, make the report.

Call Dream Carz, Jodi he got a left tail light for me just abt 1 month ago.... be mindfull there are three types, and ensure the wiring is the same as the broken light....

The difference in all three is the reverse light..

1. the reverse is split into two white strips.
2. The reverse light is a circle
3. the reverse light is a bronze colour.

it costed $750.00

ALWAYS MAKE THE REPORT.
you can specify how the vehicles' repair will be handled.
and being involved in an accicent always carries the risk of being charged for a traffic offense.

well was the couva police station, they told me that the possibility always existed
now they pushing to enforce it
he said they were recording accidents now on some new form and making a digital record, so in theory they would be able to tell how many accidents u were in and take the appropriate course of action, thing is since my car was not damaged it just the corolla to fix,

about the reverse light is a cirlce and the indicator light was also a circle
whats jodi no?

please note...........

as i was told by a lawyer many years ago ...

all you need to do to report an accident is give the police the following information.
statement - i was in a accident
place
time and date
registration number
insurance policy information
drivers permit number

nothing else is required by law
never give a statement if it's not necessary
and never admit liability

    backward laws FTL

nope actually thats the best way to do it. you wouldnt believe how many ppl bring claims for personal injuries a yr after the collission and in many instances the same statement you gave to the polive can be admitted as evidendce in court and judgments can be given against you. in most instances the insurance has to indemnify the person hurt but sometimes there are loopholes which makes the driver responsible for paying for injuries and thats not something to look foward to cause the awards in court these days are ...lets just say substantive..

This accident report form has been in use a while now - at least at the model stations. I am guessing it is now being rolled out to others.

They enter the information recorded in a database for future reference.

I dont think we have any law here that states if you get into x amount of accidents you will be charged/licence suspended etc...

in my years of driving, when ever you go to make a report the police always said and continue to say both parties have to come to an agreement to fix or the charge is negelent driving to start, then it is reckless driving and due care and attention, plus they can be pretty convincing to you just for them not to visit the scene,or make investagions on the matter, plus they dont bother who is wrong or right,,,,,,,if you wrong cough up or tell the other party lawsuite if you are right and they dont want to pay, :| :|
