Electronic antenna ques

I bought an electronic antenna for my car but I noticed there is a long black wire attached to the strip that you stick to the windshield.What is the purpose of that?
I already hooked up the antenna to the deck but its not working good.I didn't know what that other wire was for so I just rapped it up and left it on the dash.

What did I do wrong?

i believe that's the power wire.. check if the power LED (red) is lighting..
