OBD II Universal Scan Tools...does not work in T&T?

Postby TRINIOUTLAW » May 24th, 2006, 2:55 pm

About 2 weeks ago my cuz from Trinidad was in town here in Florida. He bought a universal OBD II Scan tool (Actron Model #9145) from Pepboys and returned home with it. He contacted me recently and told me that it will not read in his 2002 Nissan Wingroad does anyone know why? is there a diffrence between the USDM OBD II code sytem and the JDM OBD II code system?

does he have a piggyback ecu? Seems these interfere with the scanners ability to communicate.

Also, even though it is universal plug, don't these require that you select the vehicle, or choose auto select for it to establish communications? I think I remember the guy trying to auto detect vehicle when another model wasn't communicating with my ECU (same thing worked before emanage had gone in)

Yeah...his does not ask for vehicle ID you just plug it in and it should work.

ok, I just read the user manual for this model. That's what i gathered. Says it works for domestic and foreign, except u need to be specific for Ford, GM, Chrysler.

Not sure :|

I have a C-Reader. Haven't tried it yet. (No need so far.) Waiting for you to install Xede.
Not sure if it's Mitsubishi USDM or JDM specific.
I thought OBD-II was a universal OEM 'standard' for diagnostic reporting anyhow?

nah boy sanctifier,
while the plug is the same, it seems the scan tool's software / firmware in most cases has to be manufacturer specific.

Not quite true.
[1] There are different protocols
[2] Many Asian vehicles are not fully OBD-II compliant, they have the jack, and some stuff and some scanners will work esp the high end SnapOns etc.

This may help some: http://www.obdii.com/connector.html

Also, take that same Actron (my fave BTW) and put it to a Focus or Chrysler and it will work just fine. Most OBD-II cars also say it on the firewall.

thsi si what i know on scanners
The wingroads and new model almera we are getting is singapore which means the scanners we use example snap on will not work on thesecars we need autoboss and also a JBT auto scanner imaine the new cefiro you can actually adjust timing from the scanner. All local cars will be picked up but they have problems picking up the singapore cars.
jBT auto canner and the auto boss will pick up some of the singapore cars i know the JBT picks up evolutions and subaru and the autoboss does nissan and toyota

i can't believe this. so many technicians use scan tools today and nobody knows which scan tool will work in trinidad.

so are we all getting ripped of when we go by these guys?

^^^^
the one i go to nope. but case in point.
when he checks my car or another B14 i went with, it worked well. i actually get to see the screen and the information outputted by my vehicles sensors.

yet same device connected to a 323F fastback, also obdii yields no signal.
i recommend you take a look at what is being done rather than taking some one's word for it.

I go to a place on the main road in Penal. the guy's name is Sheldon, his # is 751-8027. and i can't currently recall which make / model scanner he has.

my uncle has a scanner but his is vehicle specific..

it uses the OBDII port but different software cartridges for each make of vehicle.
