An Apexi AFC is a piggy-back type controller. It isn't NECESSARY to tune on a dyno, but it will help. A generic, stand-alone type MANAGEMENT SYSTEM almost always needs to be tuned on a dyno.

It basically adjust ur ecu fuel maps?
So u would need someone familiar with apexi? Someone who can tune based on ur engine n mods for optimal performance and fuel economy!

I say an experienced apexi tuner & dyno is the best way!
So to all the guys selling/using apexi... Whoes does yall tuning?

a dyno is ALWAYS the best way to tune any type of fuel management. piggyback or standalone.

so we dyno tune at one intake temperature, one static load, one ambient temperature, one wind speed (fan), one very narrow range of barometric pressures and expect it to perform at it's peak every day and night, rain or shine, uphill and downhill?

You can tune a car on the road on on a dyno. Some cars are a bit bit mental to tune on the road from scratch.
Dynos ,engine or rolls, are perferred as they help to establish engine loads in a safe environment to allow you to find optimium spark and fuel pionts at rpm/load pionts you are LIKEY to drive in. If you do understand this concept you can also do this on the road, but not establish MBT, LBT. PI pionts or BLD, by applying the brakes to hold the car at different rpms and increase load to calibrate. Beware with this method as I have almost been arrested calibrating a car having got my brakes on fire as I mapped 3000rpm from 30kpa cruise to 120kpa of boost.
Road tuning is what we the OEMs have to do to validate the engines behiavior when it has gone thorugh dyno testing and roller simulations. Sometimes we use tracks for Vmax testing or the public road like the autoban for WOT loads in reprenitive chasiss or surrogates and the Alps for altitude at times to tweak real life situations. This can be simulated on the engine or car with engine or chassis dynos but you always some operating condition using this method.
If you are calibrating an aftermarket PCM to suit USER defined desireables
and your base fuel and spark maps are optimised as best as you can at normal engine temperatures (80-100) you can then switch on the modifiers to compensate for intake/engine coolant temperatures and ambient pressure.
You should also spend some time to refine cold start.

Hope this is simple enough to understand.

MBT, LBT. PI pionts or BLD

these mean what exactly?

Minimum Best Timing for best torque as in spark advance
Lean Best Torque as in mixture prep
Pre Ignition as in piston hot spots or mini flame fronts
Boardline Det. Cylinder pressure trace starting to become jagged on histogram decent.

There are conditions on an engines rev range where MBT is lower than BLD which is good and other times where BLD is lower than MBT which is not good for torque development or the engines life. care must be taking for the latter a.k.a knock detection.
