Postby STUD 101 » December 2nd, 2006, 11:37 am

Could someone tell me what would be the recommended engine oil for an Nissan sunny QG15 engine. The car was recently bought and it still has the oil from singapore looking to change it and looking for the right oil to ensure extended life and good performance. Someone told me 10w-40 any views??? or links that i could view to help me out??

10W40 is hard to find. Use a 20W50 oil. GTX is your best bet. No sense wasting money on a synth for that car.

On most cars, the manf'rs recommend an oil change of 5000 km or 3 months right? Most multigrade non synth oils do well with this sort of oil change interval . They have sufficient anti sludge and detergent properties. A daily driven B15 or Corolla is no where near the high performance category, and so don't need an oil which is intended for high temp/abuse applications.

Also keep in mind that Oils like Syntec or Mobil are NOT true synthetic oils. They are in fact generated from "Dino oil" just like GTX....however they are so highly processed, that by "law"/SAE regulations, they are classified as "synthetic".

Now a high performance engine...like a turbo one for instance...needs a higher quality oil..because rememeber that smae engine oil is lubraicting (and cooling) the turbo. That turbo get really hot...over 1200 deg F....so you need an oil which won't break down at those elevated temperatures and pressures. So in such a situation, you would need a true synth oil (which handles these situations better)....for a regular N/A car.....these conditions just don't exist. So a non-synth oil works fine.

The only difference between a synth oil and a non synth oil these days, is that the sy nth oil can withstand higher operating temperatures, and is more resistant to oxidation. Otherwise, most of the additives are pretty much identical. So IMO, save yourself some money.

i think the GTX says it can be used for turbo charged vehicles. got to double check that.

Yes it can be used. Certain "perfomance mechanics" use that on their customers' vehicles.

^^^^ 10,000 km yes. but i use mobil1 and its way, way to expensive. mobil1 has a lot of name. its a good oil yes, but overpriced too. a best oil for STUD 101, application IMO is the gtx 20W50, with oil changes about every 6,500km

I was getting the 10W40 for free Shell rimula. thought it was a good deal however wasn't to sure about the range of viscocity. so i think i would go on the safe side and pay for the castrol 20W50. Thanks fellas

Used Royal Purple 10W-40 on my stock B15 for 15400 kilometers (1 year). I kept getting a consistent 400km on a full tank of gas ($100). My driving style is that of "baby on board".

When i tuned-up on Saturday and drained the oil there was still tinges of the purple dye that Royal uses. The spark plugs were clean also.

This would have been the first time i have ever disregarded my regular PMaint. cycle. I will not be doing it again but i was pretty impressed with the Royal Purple.

I tuned-up using Quaker State 20W-50. I use QS in between cycles because of its good anti-sludge cleaning properties. My next tune-up will be within the 5000km metrics. i will then go back to Royal Purple.

My recommendation for the Nissan Sunny will be Ultra Premium 10W 30 or the 20W 50.

I use the 10W30 in my Suzuki SX4 and 20W50 on an Almera (7yrs). I also had a foreign used Nissan Primera 2.0 for 7 yrs (11yr car) in which I used NP 20W50 with no problems. Never smoked and when the tappet cover seal needed changing, the top of the engine was very clean.
I know the normal recommendation is to change on 5000km, however I change the oil every 6 months ( about 12 500km).

I know NP oil is local but they actually have their oils licensed internationally. Their quality is equivalent to the Mobil and Shell and the others.

I have heard that the NP Ultra is indeed an excellent oil that actually leaves this rich gold protective layer on the engine parts.

I have never used it personally, when I had the QG15 used Castrol syntec in it, when I converted to SR I switched to Amsoil.

Tried Mobil 1 in the QG and went to lime the same night, my partners thought I put a diesel engine in the car, changed it back to syntec the following morning, engine got back quiet...
Just my experience.
