businesses will exploit what they can
be it early reputation to market or lack of regulation for intended benefits to consumer

sandals man owns the dealership for the caribbean so he set price across the board

i_code_and_stuff wrote:idk how much of that is capitalism vs lack of regulation and lack of competition.

at least the prices are consistent with the rest of the region (not that i think it's fair overall)

Singapore has 5m ppl and just a bit bigger than Tobago though. By policy car ownership is meant to be as difficult as possible there.

you cant just buy a car and put it on the road there too
there are fixed number of cars on road so you have to wait u til a car is removed and auction for that car spot

Do like the US and limit perks only for cars below a certain value.

This will force dealers to sell at a more affordable price

It is very simple if the government was really interested in helping the small man.

Nothing will force dealers to sell at a lower price as long as we have a managed float.
There are exemptions on electric and hybrids and they cost as much or more than ICE vehicles.

At least they could try. No reason to give tax exceptions on very expensive electric vehicles.

Why subsidize millionaires?

It's nonsensical.

I hope a UNC government changes this

Tax free should only be for vehicles under 250000

So it will then be up to dealers to keep the price low and get the tax free benefit

All tax free perks for cars in trinidad should have a limit

It's just a matter of common sense, which we all know is not very common

Lafast and BYD

Postby greggle71 » June 16th, 2025, 2:41 pm

I see Czar Distribution advertising BYD vehicles on facebook calling themselves authorized dealers too

Prices almost 100 k cheaper than Lafast

Atto3 for 280k
Sealion6 for 315k

I ain’t gonna lie, I am here for the undercutting of the stealerships as what they are quoting are more inline with global prices and they still getting a decent markup on each unit.

im 99% sure they're not. also several of the cars they advertise as "new" are actually foreign used. there's a couple other similar ones that have popped up in the past few months - it's all a bit shady.

small warning on this - if one goes this route and something happens, it's near impossible to get parts & support outside of the dealers' supply chain for BYD at the moment. probably not a huge concern though given that most of the newer models are quite reliable (seal/sealion/dolphin/shark). me personally, i think EVs in general are too big a risk to not have support and warranty

Added 200k for "support and warranty"

and to keep warranty must service by them at whatever ridiculous price I'm pretty sure they gonna ask... Mmmm

depends on the car. the actual difference might be around 90k. also remember not to compare using prices in china - they set export MSRPs that are double and triple those prices to recoup what they lose domestically (as well as the fact that they undergo more rigorous QA and utilize higher quality materials for export markets).

it really depends on your risk tolerance. 90k+ might be a lot, but ask yourself what you gonna do if the battery is DOA, or there's some fault that nobody can fix locally (look at what's happening the past few months with the ICCU issues in the Ioniq5/6 and Kia EV 6). you might have gotten a sweeter deal (if these shady fb pages even do deliver and not just scamming you), but now you spent a couple hundred grand for a dead car that you can't fix

i havent gotten to try it myself but yeah you can technically install updates without dealer involvement, its just a matter of downloading the package unto a USB drive and doing some runaround to bypass the security checks. but the dealers have specialized diagnostic tools available to them to spot check issues post-update, which is useful in case the update bricks the system for some reason

Well three vehicles pass through my extended family with czar, all were in fact new (twin turbo Aussie spec frontier with sunroof, biturbo ranger and I think was a crv)

Only one with serious issue was a biturbo ranger after about the first year, brand new transmission arrived in a crate warranty fulfilled.

He serviced or arranged a third party to do repairs etc. So I won’t call this grey dealer name in the same sentence with the con men

I have no fear of buying from CZAR . Actually, i have heard plenty of horror stories from ANSA and some of the legacy dealers

noted, good to know that they are not like some of the others.

still standing by what i said though, purely because we talking about EVs - its a different game you're playing there

czar selling the performance for cheaper than lafast selling the comfort or entry model.
