Visas required for T&T nationals to or through the UK

Postby st7 » March 12th, 2025, 9:38 am

Effective today, 12 March 2025, all nationals of Trinidad and Tobago will need a visa before travelling to or through (transiting) the UK, including on short visits.
This is in addition to established requirements to obtain a visa to travel to the UK for the purpose of Work, Study and Settlement.
There will be a six-week transition period until 15:00 on 23 April 2025, during which time visitors who booked their travel and obtained an ETA before the changes can still enter the UK without a visa. There is also a transition period for passengers who are transiting via the UK to an onward destination.
For more details please check - How to apply for a visa to come to the UK: Choose a visa - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

"Asylum" my black elbow... trinis spoil a good thing...

No more visa-free entry to UK for TT nationals, after asylum surge

The UK Government has announced today that with immediate effect, all nationals of Trinidad and Tobago will need a visa before travelling to the UK, including on short visits.

The decision to introduce a visa requirement has been taken due to a significant increase in the number of Trinidad and Tobago nationals coming to the UK as visitors only to claim asylum on arrival, constituting a misuse of the immigration system.

In response, CARICOM and Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne said: "This move is within their rights as a sovereign nation, but we do not see it as a proportionate response to what UK authorities conveyed to us, which was their observation that a relatively small number of T&T nationals were misusing the UK immigration system by being processed for an ETA in the normal existing process and then suddenly applying for asylum after arrival."

The UK’s relationship with Trinidad and Tobago remains a strong and friendly one, the British High Commission said in it's statement issued on Wednesday.

The statement read: "This decision has not been taken lightly and the UK Government regularly reviews its visa and immigration policies to ensure they remain effective.

The changes, which come into effect immediately, will apply to all Trinidad and Tobago nationals travelling to the UK. A requirement for transit visas will also be introduced from 00:01 on 13 March.

However, there will be a six-week transition period until 15:00 on 23 April 2025, during which time visitors who booked their travel and obtained an ETA before the changes can still enter the UK without a visa. There is also a transition period for passengers who are transiting via the UK to an onward destination.

British High Commissioner to Trinidad and Tobago, Jon Dean, said: “The changes announced today align Trinidad and Tobago with many other visa national countries with which the UK shares close and friendly ties. We understand that travel is important for families, businesses, and cultural connections. The introduction of visitor visas is designed to support safe and secure travel while ensuring the UK’s borders remain protected.

The British High Commission in Port of Spain has worked closely with the UK government to put in place arrangements that allow Trinidad and Tobago nationals to apply for their visitor visas right here at home. We remain committed to welcoming visitors and look forward to continuing the strong ties between our people.

As a valued Commonwealth partner, Trinidad and Tobago remains an important part of the UK’s global community.”

The UK government will work with our commercial partner, VFS Global, to ensure sufficient capacity at the Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Port of Spain including opening 5 days a week to accommodate the processing of visitor visa applications in Trinidad and Tobago.

Visa applications are submitted and paid for online at http://www.gov.uk, after which applicants book an appointment at a VAC to provide their biometrics and hand over their passport.

The UK Government aims to process applications within 15 UK working days of receipt of the passport and biometrics and applicants can apply up to three months in advance.

A six-month multiple entry visa for the UK currently costs £115. Longer validity visas are also available.

Nationals of Trinidad and Tobago who booked travel to the UK before 15:00 GMT on 12 March will still be able to enter the UK without a visa as long as they hold a valid ETA and are scheduled to arrive in the UK before 15:00 BST on 23 April. Those already in the UK will not be affected by the new requirement for the remainder of their visit, but once they leave the UK, they will need a visitor visa in order to enter the UK again.

Trinidad and Tobago passengers will be able to transit the UK airside (not leaving the airport) without a visa until 23 April, if they booked tickets to their onward destination via the UK before the introduction of the transit visa requirement. Nationals from Trinidad and Tobago are already required to obtain a visa for other (non-visit) purposes, such as to work or study. Those resident in the UK will be able to travel and return using their eVisa."

Dr. Browne said: "We have noted that their decision to reintroduce visa requirements will be kept under review. We have indicated our disappointment with the new visa requirement and will continue our consistent engagement with our UK counterparts. We are not of the view that regular travelers to the UK should be negatively affected by a relatively small number of persons who have been trying to abuse the British immigration system."

It more comes across that asylum seekers were the easy go-to excuse to institute visas, I am sure they wanted to do this a while now.

Last year Gabriel the "batman" did a video with him in London claiming he also applied for asylum.

In December came back in POS same time as the BA flight and had a man hustling change in Duty Free. Had a UK Immigration and visas brown envelope with him. Sure he got deported or turned back. He gave me a sad story about going up for work and getting blank by the man who tell him to come up.

Almost 800 T&T nationals applied for UK asylum in 2 years

Alleged gangsters and their families, and a local ‘influencer’ are among the almost 800 Trinidad and Tobago nationals who have applied for asylum in the United Kingdom since 2023.

The number of asylum seekers was disclosed in an ‘explanatory memorandum’ that accompanied the statement detailing the changes to the immigration rules present to the Parliament in the UK on Wednesday.

According to the document, there has been a significant increase in nationals of Trinidad and Tobago who have travelled to the UK for purposes that are not permitted under the Immigration Rules for Visitors, such as to live, work or claim asylum in the UK.

In particular, there has been a sustained increase in asylum claims by nationals of Trinidad and Tobago. In the most recent eight quarters (2023 Quarter 1 to 2024 Quarter 4) there were 79, 111, 55, 108, 73, 56, 106 and 209 asylum claims (including dependents) from nationals of Trinidad and Tobago. This compares with an average of 49 asylum claims per year between 2015 and 2019.

A majority of asylum claims from nationals of Trinidad and Tobago were made at port on arrival in the UK. This adds significantly to operational pressures at the border, diverting staff from other priorities.

Trinidad and Tobago’s visa status will be kept under review; particularly with regards to whether the visa introduction affects the number of individuals claiming asylum from within the UK and the internal security situation in Trinidad and Tobago. In the interim, nationals of Trinidad and Tobago will need to apply for and obtain a visa prior to visiting the UK.

As a result, Trinidad and Tobago has been removed from the list of countries whose nationals are eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

In January 2025, CCN journalist Mark Bassant reported on a secret intelligence report prepared by Trinidad and Tobago law enforcement authorities being sent to United Kingdom authorities warning of the presence of a top member of the Seven gang, who “poses a serious and immediate threat to the safety and security of the United Kingdom”.

The Sunday Express obtained an exclusive copy of the report that several intelligence sources confirmed was sent to the United Kingdom’s Immigration Enforcement Agency, Metropolitan Police and the UK intelligence services on December 6, 2024.

In the report, the top gang member is described as “a prominent organised crime figure from Trinidad and Tobago” of the notorious Rasta City gang called “Seven”.

“His criminal network is involved in a range of illicit activities, including narcotics trafficking, arms smuggling, unlicensed gold mining, gold smuggling, targeted killings, and international money laundering,” states the report.

The Express also reported that a gang member named in the report has sent for seven of his children since settling in the United Kingdom.

Garvin Nicholas - former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom:

While nothing in life is surprising, I would have been very surprised if as High Commissioner to the UK, such a drastic change in Visa protocol was sprung on me without notice.

As High Commissioner, I had a very good working relationship with all major departments affecting my brief and even forged greater relationships with MPs and members of the House of Lords by championing a T&T All Party Parliamentary Group at Westminster to specifically seek T&T’s interest.

I was able to represent T&T’s interest on many aspects of UK government policy that directly or indirectly affected T&T’s citizens.

It would have been a slap in my face for the UK government to implement this Visa requirement without first discussing their concerns and giving T&T an opportunity to address and/or fix this.

The fact that this major policy change has been announced by the UK on T&T, a country that has buffered the coffers of UK companies for decades, from whom our parliamentary, legal, medical and civil society is based, is worse than tariffs by the USA on Canada.

This is a slap in the face for all Trinidad and Tobago nationals and it is a clear sign by the UK government that Trinidad and Tobago no longer enjoys any kind of special relationship.

We are becoming more and more isolated and this does not augur well for us.
