Citizens Must help pay $4b T&TEC gas bill.

The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) owes the National Gas Company (NGC) over $4 billion, and consumers will have to assist in repaying this as the Government cannot at this time.

This would mean increased electricity rates.

Minister of Public Utilities Marvin Gonzales spoke to this in an address in Charlotteville on Friday, during the commissioning of a 15 kilowatt solar PV system at Charlotteville Methodist Primary School.

“T&TEC gets its gas from NGC; the price that it pays for the gas is not passed on to you the consumers, and that is the reason why today, the Government owes the NGC over $4 billion,” Gonzales said.

Gonzales said taxpayers will have to pay more “because if T&TEC were called upon to pay that gas price of $4 billion, then someone has to pay for it; it will fall to you the consumers to pay for it because the Government does not have the money to find $4 billion to pay NGC for that gas, so that T&TEC can generate electricity from cheap gas so that you the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago can have affordable electricity.”

Gonzales said consumers in this country continue to pay the lowest for water and electricity.

“It should really dawn heavy on our minds that on a yearly basis, we spend over $2.1 billion in the water sector to keep WASA going, so whilst, yes, we are paying the lowest rates for water, the Government has to find the revenues to ensure that we get water as best as we can, in the same way for electricity; T&TEC is in a far better place in terms of its financial standing where its operations are concerned,” he said.

Gonzales’ comments come following the Regulated Industries Commission’s (RIC) public consultation on the proposed increased rates and Cabinet’s deliberations towards the proposed changes in electricity rates to be announced.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, who was also at the commissioning ceremony, said the diversification of energy consumption patterns in a sustainable manner is a step in the right direction.

“Today’s (Friday’s) commissioning and bestowing ceremony reflects that we are taking a decisive action as an energy-producing state towards embracing clean energy technology, and for a very long time, we have been reliant solely on hydrocarbons, but this is a step in the right direction, a step towards diversifying our energy consumption patterns and a step towards doing so in the most sustainable manner,” Augustine said.

When flying in to Piarco you can see dozens of playfields fully lit up for hours with nobody using them. This is a massive wastage of energy. All govt buildings run the AC, lighting etc 24/7 even during off hours and public holidays. The govt has to do their part. They are the major users of electricity.

The state owes TTEC the most, cut out the rampant corruption, the overtime bills of these state entities, over staffing.

He is correct they not going to increase it NOW as they don't want to jeopardize the upcoming elections. The country will be on autopilot for the next couple of months as to not upset the undecided voters. As we know it's the marginal seats that win the elections every time.

No Increase in Water & Electricity Rates:

Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath has reaffirmed the United National Congress (UNC)'s commitment to keeping water and electricity rates unchanged.

Speaking to reporters after Saturday evening’s Cabinet Swearing-In, he emphasised that the new Government is guided by compassion for the people of Trinidad and Tobago.

The former Minister of Public Utilities, Marvin Gonzales, says while the Government's decision to not implement the recommended rate increase for T&TEC customers is appealing to citizens, it is not financially feasible for the country.

Great PNM answer to every economic wise: Freeze wages,Increase existing taxes, implement new taxes and pay more for most government goods and services. That analogue thinking is exactly why they lost the election

Annually, Government subsidises T&T’s public utilities—the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) and Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC)—to the tune of over $2.5 billion, according to estimates made by former Minister of Finance, Colm Imbert in September 2020.

TSTT, WASA, T&TEC, IGOVTT, Government Ministry... name almost ministry or state agency

10 years of "get-thru-ism" results in:

-- incompetent people, especially in administrative roles (Finance, HR, IT, etc)
-- double and triple the number of people in those roles
-- incompetent managers, senior managers, HOD's, who also 'get thru'
-- exorbitant salaries for incompetence
-- Overtime FRAUD (10 people on a gang and 3 people on site...)

Plus, "Consultant" and fake contracts for friends and families...

it's a mess out there. CEPEP is just the beginning

Grateful that these things are being FIXED before raising raising my bills.

I have literally seen people in Accounting roles in some of these places who can barely use Excel to add a column of numbers, and others in IT who learn one system, and not doing anything else.

The incompetence is real.. and the salaries they take home... amazing.

Lucky people.
