Housing Developer Charged with Fraud

A Valsayn housing developer was granted bail with surety in the sum of $250,000 when he appeared before a Master of the High Court yesterday charged with Fraud.

MAHINDRA BOODRAM, was charged with Uttering Forged Documents and Obtaining the sum of $1,647,000 and $1,665,000 by virtue of Forged Documents, when he appeared in court on Wednesday 14th August, 2024.

He was granted bail to cover both matters and instructed to report every first Saturday of each month to a police station.

The matter was postponed to October 15th, 2025.

Victims reported to police that they had entered into an agreement to purchase houses located in Cunupia from a developer. They allege they made down payments and obtained mortgage facilities from their respective financial institutions.

The developer then produced several documents including a Completion Certificate which were provided to the financial institutions. Funds were later dispersed to the developer. It was subsequently discovered that the documents were fraudulent and not issued by the authorising institution.

Investigations into the matter were spearheaded by W/Snr. Supt. Phillips, Supt. Lutchman and W/Insp. Smith, of Fraud Squad and resulted in the arrest of one suspect.

Boodram was charged with the offences by Sgt. (Ag.) Edwards, also of Fraud Squad, on August 13th, 2024.

The investigation was assisted by Cpl Murray, Cpl (Ag.) Kernahan and PCs Ramkissoon, Thomas, Jaikaran and Edwards, all of Fraud Squad.

Update

https://newsday.co.tt/2024/08/16/updated-police-hold-3-after-mid-morning-car-chase-in-pos/

A drama that began with a mid-morning car theft in Maraval ended in the Holy Rosary RC church in central Port of Spain, where one of the three car thieves was arrested after disguising himself in a priest’s robes.

He had fled into the church when police intercepted the stolen van on Park Street after chasing it through the capital on the morning of August 15.

Around 9.30 am, three men, one armed with a gun, confronted a family unloading groceries at their home.

The assailants demanded the keys to the family’s grey Nissan Navara, then drove off with some of the groceries still in the tray of the van.

The terrified family called the police and the dispatcher at the command centre told patrolling officers to be on the lookout.

Police spotted the stolen vehicle in Port of Spain as the thieves made their way east along Park Street. Police followed the men in an unmarked car, and at the Henry Street intersection, another group of police pulled in front of the stolen vehicle.

Eyewitnesses reported the men got out of the van and began running in different directions, leaving behind a black bag, a gun and a single slipper.

A Facebook post by the RC Archdiocese of Port of Spain reported that one of the robbers had run into the Holy Rosary Church at the intersection around 10 am, and disguised himself in a priest’s alb (long robe) “while hiding in the sacristy,” the statement said. A sacristy is where the priests prepare for services and keep their vestments and articles of worship.

Police held the robber, and the post said they found cash and other stolen items.

Newsday visited the church later in the day. Its usually open doors were closed and its gates padlocked.

The Archdiocese concluded its post by saying it continues to pray for the crime situation.

“We ask the intercession of Our Lady of the Assumption to pray for us.”

When Newsday arrived around 10.15 am, scores of police and civilians were gathered at the corner. Police blocked traffic from entering Henry Street, between Duke Street and the Park and Henry intersection.

Opposition MP Rudranath Indarsingh, who was in the capital on business, spoke with Newsday mere metres away.

He praised the police for their “timely response” and expressed relief that no innocent bystanders were hurt.

A Morvant woman who robbed an elderly man of $2,700 in cash on Thursday at a fast foot outlet in Port-of-Spain has been arrested.

The 61-year-old victim of Picton Road, Laventille, reportedly withdrew the money from RBC, Independence Square, around 2 pm on August 15. After placing the money in his right back pocket, he headed to Church’s Chicken on Henry Street to meet a friend.

When leaving the fast food outlet, the man was approached by the suspect, who was not known to him. The female suspect is of African descent, five feet tall, slim built, dark in complexion, with curly shoulder-length hair and a scar on the left side of her face.

She allegedly began gyrating on the elderly man whilst rubbing her hands over his body and hugging him close. When the woman walked off and the man checked his pocket, he realised the money was missing. He made a report to the police.

Officers from the Guard & Emergency Branch (GEB) later held the woman while she was walking along the street.
