Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha (SDMS) secretary general Vijay Maharaj says he attended Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally’s news conference last Friday as a member of the media and not as an SDMS executive.
Rambally held the news conference at the Divali Nagar site, Chaguanas, where he delivered a 17-page statement attacking United National Congress (UNC) leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar, saying the party will not win the next general election under her leadership.
The Express story by Shivana Lal reported that Rambally was supported by SDMS executive members, including Maharaj; president general Krishna Rambally; and Dharmacharya (religious teacher) Pundit Dr Rampersad Parasram, who all posed for photographs with Rambally.
Also in attendance were Naparima MP Rodney Charles, UNC activist Victor Roberts and attorney Kiel Taklalsingh, who has filed nomination papers for Couva North for the 2025 general election.
On April 13, Maharaj wrote a stinging e-mail to Lal, taking umbrage with the Express report about Rambally’s news conference—that Rambally was supported by the SDMS secretary general.
Maharaj stated:
“Ms Lall (sic) it seems that you have a problem Journalism integrity.
Why were you present yesterday at MP’s Dinesh Rambally’s press Conference?
As a member of the media?
Once again your lack of knowledge has shone in dealing with the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha and your ignorance of its contribution to the landscape of T&T after 3/4 Century.
I am the Managing Director of a Media House called Central Broadcasting Services Ltd, in case you didn’t know Radio and TV Jaagriti, I was invited as a member of the Media.
The fact that I am also the Secretary General of the SDMS was irrelevant.
This is the second time I have seen the need to factually correct your cub reporting.
I am left to wonder are you a member of the Pocket or Yellow Journalist Association in T&T.”
‘Extremist, intolerant group’
On Monday, Rambally issued a release stating that Persad-Bissessar “has now found a new punching bag” in the SDMS.
Rambally took issue with the media release issued by Persad-Bissessar after his news conference, in which she said, “I cannot and will not be controlled by any individual or group to promote any singular agenda at the expense of other sections of society.”
Rambally said, “If, indeed her insinuation was that the SDMS is now an extremist, intolerant group, I challenge her to come out and say so frankly and publicly.”
Persad-Bissessar has not specifically referred to the SDMS in her public statements.
She reiterated her comments on Monday at the UNC public meeting in Moruga that she will not be controlled by any individual or group, and her kindness should never be taken for weakness.
A group of five dissident MPs have publicly criticised the management of the UNC and called for the party’s internal election due in June.
They are Rambally, Naparima MP Rodney Charles, Cumuto/Manzanilla MP Dr Rai Ragbir, Tabaquite MP Anita Haynes and Mayaro MP Rushton Paray.
All MPs, except for Charles, have filed nomination papers with the hopes of being selected to continue representing the people in Parliament on a UNC ticket.

Questions for ingrate Dinesh
Ravi Balgobin Maharaj
AFTER Basdeo Panday first historically referred to Ramesh Lawrence Maharaj as a neemakharam, the term has been used to describe anyone who might become disloyal to a political party or any other organisation, and in some way through its continued use, it appears to have lost some of its bite and meaning.
And in a discussion with Mr Panday himself on the matter, he explained to me that really, the term had become inconsequential, and therefore needed to be updated. As such, and in honour of the memory of Basdeo Panday, I wish to bestow this title upon someone truly befitting of it. Because there is no one in the current crop of traitors more deserving of the rank of “maha neemakharam” than Dinesh Rambally for even mentioning the Bhagavad Gita in the nonsensical ramblings that he called a news conference held last Friday.
It is remarkable that at no time in the preparation of his speech did he take time to realise that of the issues which he raised as evidence against the suitability for Kamla Persad-Bissessar to remain as political leader of the UNC, not one of them occurred after 2020. Both the issue of Reshmi Ramnarine and property tax occurred prior to 2015, and both Persad-Bissessar and the UNC have atoned for these mistakes since.
But more pointedly, Rambally ought to have been aware of these issues when he was selected as a candidate in 2020 by Mrs Persad-Bissessar, and especially when he was swearing the oath he holds so dearly. So the question that he must be asked is: if he was comfortable joining the parliamentary arm of the UNC in 2020 with Persad-Bissessar at the helm—and by his own admission, she has not made any offence that was noteworthy enough to be mentioned in his rant since 2020—then why is she unfit to be leader now and not then?
Moreover—and this is a question to all the traitors who are now rearing their heads—if they find that the UNC is now incapable of winning the next general election, do they not think that they might have played a role in this failure given that they have been parliamentarians for at least the past four years? If you are sitting down in Parliament and you think that you are losing the support of the people who voted to put you there, don’t you think you share part of the collective responsibility for this loss?
Of course, that simply isn’t the truth, and Persad-Bissessar has demonstrated that under her leadership, the UNC has only been gaining both votes and seats, and it is a fact that she is guiding the party to victory in the upcoming general election poll. And it is the anticipation of this victory that is causing these political neophytes to stage this coup, as they want all of the power of government for their own selfish purposes.
It was hilarious to hear Rambally speak about how much value he places in the electorate of a general election poll when he clearly has no respect for the UNC supporters who have consistently and continually placed their support behind Persad-Bissessar as the political leader of the UNC. Because every member of the National Executive also swears an oath, which is a pledge to serve not only the voting members of the party but every single citizen of this nation who looks to the UNC for representation and guidance. And when Rambally, Rushton Paray and others try to discredit Persad-Bissessar as the legitimate political leader of the UNC, what they are really doing is discrediting the political will and freedom of the over 140,000 financial members of the party who have full faith and confidence in Mrs Persad-Bissessar to lead their party to victory.
That all being said, it will be interesting to see how these neemakharams fare in an internal election when the bell is inevitably rung. But it is telling that similarly to most previous contenders, this current crop of hopefuls continue to base their entire campaign on Persad-Bissessar and fail to mention why any of them deserve to take over the mantle of leadership. Because while Rambally might talk about his issues with the current leadership, he has not said a single word in favour of why anyone might think he could do any better.
The truth is that the only failure in the UNC over the past four years has been with members of Parliament deliberately attempting to sabotage the reputation of their leader in the hopes of their own elevation, and that has absolutely no merit to anyone serious about choosing their next political leader and prime minister.
As Persad-Bissessar has repeatedly said, “Performance beats ole (talk) every time”, and that is the reason she remains the political leader of the UNC.
That's like cro cro supporting the PNM. We all know that's Barry's friend who always suing for something.Mmoney607 wrote:Questions for ingrate Dinesh

But now with the witness statements they realised Al Rawi was right.
Ravi is UNC’s hatchet man, but it hasn’t help them. Likewise piling on Rambally for what he said about Kamla when Kamla said the same things about Panday in 2009, will make him a martyr. The writing is on the wall for Kamla. I doubt they will even get sufficient financing for any 2025 campaign with Kamla at the head.
