UNC Polls Unlikely This Year

...Kamla to focus on general election

THE highly contentious United National Congress (UNC) internal elections are likely to be held after the general election constitutionally due next year.

In the face of calls from about five sitting Opposition MPs for the party’s internal elections to be held when due in June, the Express understands that the majority of the 19 Opposition MPs support the holding of the party’s internal polls after the general election as they believe that all resources and energy must be centred on battling the People’s National Movement (PNM) and removing Dr Keith Rowley from office.

At a cottage meeting in Caroni East last night, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar focused on the general election which is constitutionally due by August 2025 but which can be called at any time before that, at Rowley’s discretion. She did not address the issue of the party’s internal elections.

Whilst Persad-Bissessar is in a general election fighting mode, some of her MPs, however, are calling for the party’s internal polls to be held in June.

The National Executive (Natex) internal elections (for all posts except the position of political leader) are due in June.

The call for the internal polls was first made by Mayaro MP Rushton Paray in an exclusive interview with the Express following which he held a news conference. His call has been supported by Naparima MP Rodney Charles, Tabaquite MP Anita Haynes, Cumuto/Manzanilla MP Dr Rai Ragbir and Chaguanas West MP Dinesh Rambally.

The Express understands that whilst five MPs are demanding elections, the majority of the Opposition MPs support the holding of the UNC internal elections after the next general election which is constitutionally due in 2025.

Party sources said the holding of internal elections was time-consuming and expensive, and the UNC could not be caught off-guard and unprepared if a snap general election were to be called; therefore, they said, all energy and financing must be injected into campaigning nationally to remove the PNM.

UNC Naparima executive calls for internal poll date

Charles, yesterday, issued a media release which stated that the Naparima executive, chaired by Shazam Mohammed, is calling for an urgent announcement for the date of the internal elections.

“We make this call, noting that other large parties have announced dates for their internal elections. The PNM will hold internal party elections for party group and constituency group executives on May 1 and June 1 respectively. Tobago’s People’s Party (TPP) will hold its maiden internal elections on June 9,” the release stated.

The Express was told that the UNC would continue to focus on the general election and would address the call for internal polls soon.

In response to questions from the Express, UNC chairman Davendranath Tancoo said the UNC executive will follow the relevant procedures with respect to the holding of the party’s internal elections.

“The United National Congress is an independent political party governed by its own constitution and procedures. We are certainly not governed by the internal decisions of any other party acting under their own constitutions,” Tancoo said.

He said the UNC executive is well aware of the public statements about the internal polls.

This issue will be addressed at the appropriate time and following the relevant procedures as has always been done, he said, adding that “...it is mischievous, malicious and deceptive to suggest otherwise”.

Meanwhile, the deadline for the submission of general election nomination forms for the UNC is April 15, and from May, the screening of candidates will commence.

^^^purely speculative. Almost as if it was put out as a puff piece and announcement could be made that they are having it this year despite the “naysayers.”

ANIL WANTS TO BE MP

Opposition UNC Senator Anil Roberts today filed nomination papers to contest the St. Joseph seat when the general election is called. Roberts was asked about the relationship between the UNC and the NTA in relation to the screening for a UNC candidate for the St. Joseph seat.

Like men finally starting to open their mouth now. I wonder how Moonilal feels since he used to say those same things but now has backpedaled and is quiet.

Nevertheless it is the membership to take action, and that is not looking likely.

Don't be surprised after kamla lose the election next year if she gets the Patrick Manning treatment of 2010 where his own supporters nearly give him a cut arse outside the office. Everyone fed up of kamla but due to party loyalty not saying anything. A good loss at the polls go fix that

Nah that won't happen. Even all now the outcome is assured and the supporters love it. The plan is as stated in the post above. The PNM got rid of Manning in proper timing and due course 1 month after the lost 2010 election.

10 years later and how many lost elections and rigged internals and Kamla still malingering making sure the UNC corpse rotten and stinking full of pus.

The only person to get rid of Kamla is Kamla herself and we all know she won't EVER decide to step down as opposition leader unless something serious like health related matters were to come up. Apparently she doesn't have any idea about succession planning and there's no one but herself. It's pretty much over for UNC in this decade, they should try again come 2031 and beyond.

Looks like (un) paid influencer seems to have gone off the rails and abandoned Philip, maybe he enjoys being in the company of former men, also is the "accommodation" still on? Anyway, Kamla still has enough brown nosers to prop her up. Paray and others are not popular enough on their own to effect any change. Kamla has been entrenched by surrounding herself with sycophants who offer nothing of substance on their own, so there's no obvious alternative to the supreme chairman.

It has been PNM's elections to lose in 2010, 2015, 2020 and 2025, however, the electorate has chosen the alternative only once, despite the crime rate, economic woes, a pandemic, property tax, fuel increases, Petrotrin closure and an arrogance bordering on authoritarian. Despite the opposition routinely gaining the majority of votes, any basic analysis will show that the support is concentrated in the strongholds. With a massive majority in parliament, nothing was attempted to ensure that the Westminster system was abolished and the popular vote would ensure the correct party gained power. Instead the priority was section 34.
