Recommend me a good smoke detector...

Moving into a new home soon and I want to buy a smoke detector and a fire extinguisher. I see a few at Bhagwansingh's, but I don't want to waste money on some unreliable brand. So for those of you in the know: What's a good smoke detector make/model to buy, and where can I find one?

Any other general smoke detector tips would be greatly appreciated.

I have the Kidde brand, very good, but also very sensitive, I had to remove the one in my kitchen and put it just outside the doorway. Look for a good ABC type extinguisher, better to get one from Frank Mouttet, Safetec etc where you can have it tested and checked annually and refilled if necessary

also there are dual sensor ones that have both (to detect both smoke & flame i think)

anyway anyone can recommend a good durable one preferably dual sensor or at least detect the smoke before the fire starts?

also one that you don't need to replace batteries too often

Kidde is good, but smoke detectors aren't meant for use in kitchens, instead replace it with a heat detector - either a fixed heat or rate of rise type. This will reduce false alarms.

^^Was just about to say that. We had a smoke detector in the workshop at work and had to replace it with a heat detector.

Smoke from soldering jobs or heat gun use used to trigger the damn thing. Had to rush to call security once to tell them false alarm, no need to evacuate.

So yes, smoke detector for the house, heat detector for the kitchen.

which model? and what type is it? i.e.- ionization, photoelectric or dual sensor?

Also if you are installing a home alarm system; you can get smoke detectors wired into the system.

in terms of Ext...I have Cold Fire in the bedrooms -it s available at Massy-. they come in 400ml (like the big lysol can)

bumping this to see what is the best on the market now.. we had first alert but it seems 3 out of 4 of them giving false alarms for the past 2 months. might as well replace all 4.

which is a good reliable one and with dual sensor (photoelectric & ionization)? i like the ones that can interconnect so that all alarm when 1 sensor detects smoke but those aren't dual sensor.

There's a manufactured date and replacement schedule printed at the back of every smoke detector. 10 years usually. And supposed to replace the battery once a year.

The photoelectric makes more sense and is more the standard now because there's always lots of smoldering smoke first before flames in a house fire. But if you can find the dual sensor and think it'll be better for you, then get it.

First Alert and Kiddie are the leading brands and I have both. Buy it on Amazon you can get 3 packs for good price, and buy the Amazon Basics battery too.

Order from Amazon, look for deals. You'll get it for less than half the price than if you buy local. Don't bother with the ones with CO detector.

I have several of the xsense, no issues so far. Much less false alarms. They were highly reviewed on Amazon. I got problems with every Kiddie and First Alert I ever buy.

They also better looking and smaller, not like something out of the 70s if that is a consideration.
