Actually he stole the Banana Boat song from Trinidadian Calypsonian Edric Connor "Day Dah Light" without giving him any credit whatsoever and made millions doing it. He was hated by all Trinidadians in the 50's / 60's and falsely wore the "king of Calypso" title given to him by the Americans. He plagiarized, copied and stole... he wasn't even Caribbean born.

Edric Connor made a collection songs which are traditional jamaican folk songs put them on an album and made money while he was living in London. There was obviously no major banana industry in Trinidad to sing about and since it was not his song there was nothing for Harry to steal.
Harry did push our style of music out for the world to hear. Made us popular during those times. Local performers was just jealous.
