reuters wrote:BERLIN, July 2 (Reuters) - Germany's energy regulator has listed priority areas that would have protected access to power if there are severe gas shortfalls this winter, ranging from households and hospitals to pharmaceuticals companies and paper producers.

Sharp cuts to deliveries of Russian gas through the Nord Stream pipeline have led authorities to make urgent preparations for a hard winter.

"We can't classify every business as systemically important," Klaus Mueller, head of Germany's Federal Network Agency watchdog, told the Funke newspaper group in an interview published on Saturday.

"Products and services for entertainment will be less imoprtant ... Swimming pools clearly aren't critical and nor is chocolate biscuit making."

While households are a top priority, Mueller didn't rule out the possibility of power cuts.

"If it comes to rationing, we will have to reduce industrial consumption first," he said.

"I can guarantee that we will do everything to avoid private households being left without gas. But we have learned from the coronavirus crisis that we shouldn't make promises that we are not certain of being able to keep."

Russia blames technical difficulties resulting from sanctions for Nord Stream pipeline flows being halved in recent weeks, though German officials say the cuts are retaliation for Western sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine.

Industrial consumers would be prioritised according to the commercial, economic and social impact of any power cuts, Mueller said, adding that paper would remain crucial for newspapers and medicine packaging.

"Press freedom is an important right: in a gas emergency there would be extremely high demand for information," he said.

While Mueller emphasised that Germany did not face electricity, oil or petrol shortages, he said that households should still concentrate efforts on saving energy to reduce gas consumption.

Even if Russia halted gas flows completely, piped deliveries from Norway and the Netherlands would continue and liquified natural gas (LNG) would also arrive from overseas, Mueller added.

As Europe's energy costs skyrocket, Russia is burning off large amounts of natural gas, according to analysis shared with BBC News.

They say the plant, near the border with Finland, is burning an estimated $10m (£8.4m) worth of gas every day.

Experts say the gas would previously have been exported to Germany.

Germany's ambassador to the UK told BBC News that Russia was burning the gas because they couldn't sell it elsewhere."

Scientists are concerned about the large volumes of carbon dioxide and soot it is creating, which could exacerbate the melting of Arctic ice.

The analysis by Rystad Energy indicates that around 4.34 million cubic metres of gas are being burned by the flare every day.

It is coming from a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant at Portovaya, north-west of St Petersburg.

Miguel Berger, the German ambassador to the UK, told BBC News that European efforts to reduce reliance on Russian gas were "having a strong effect on the Russian economy".

"They don't have other places where they can sell their gas, so they have to burn it," he suggested.

Norway and Great Britain are jointly providing Ukraine with "Black Hornet" military micro-drones that can be used to spy on Russian forces due to their minute size.

The drones can fit in the palm of one's hand and are described by The Debrief news site as the "smallest operational military micro-drone in the world," measuring about 4 inches by 1 inch from tip to tail with a 4-inch rotor span, and weighing 16 grams. They are manufactured by U.S.-based Teledyne FLIR but built at a facility in Norway.

This Norwegian-British drone package costs 90 million Norwegian kroner, or about $9.3 million, and includes drones, parts, transportation and training equipment. It is being financed by a British-led fund to which Norway has already contributed 400 million kroner.

A total of 19 NATO-allied countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany, utilize the Black Hornet micro-drones, according to The Debrief. The U.S. and U.K. have notably used them during special operations missions in Afghanistan.

The ongoing suppression of enemy air defenses, or SEAD, campaign—pairing the twin-engine, single-seat MiGs with U.S.-made High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles, or HARMs—represents a capability mismatch.

The Ukrainians increasingly are capable of taking out Russian air-defenses, but the Russians are struggling to return the gesture and suppress Ukrainian air-defenses.

That mismatch could reshape the battlefield in Ukraine as Russia’s wider war on the country grinds into its sixth month.

Saagar isn't wrong. Europe with the exception of Baltic States, UK and Poland have been giving little to no aid relative to their GDPs.

Germany is the biggest disappointment thus far and iirc they have never achieved the NATO recommendation for military spend. They are not ready to take a leadership role in Europe security.

Belgium hasn't offered any Aid as well afaik.

Biden made the student debt promise while campaigning for election in 2020. It's not related to Ukraine.

Nearly US$100 billion in foreign aid commitments to Ukraine.

Image

Updates August 18, 2022: data since January 24 and through August 3

The flow of new international support for Ukraine has dried up in July. No large EU country like Germany, France or Italy, has made significant new pledges. However, the gap between committed and disbursed aid has narrowed.

The newest update of the Ukraine Support Tracker (July 2 to August 3)  shows that, in July, Ukraine received only around 1,5 billion euros in new pledges of support. In total, the tracker now records commitments of 84.2 billion euros.

“In July, donor countries initiated almost no new aid, but they did deliver some of the already committed support such as weapon systems," says Christoph Trebesch, head of the team that compiles the Ukraine Support Tracker. Germany, for example, has not announced any further military support, although it did send considerably military aid committed earlier.

The B and S have their own worries, the C locking down entire megacities for one COVID case and the I playing both sides as they would require Western support for the inevitable war against China.

Just this week China has been doing incursions and started constructing something in Arunachal Pradesh (claimed as China on their official maps)

The failure of the negotiations came amid disagreements over Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has entered its sixth month.

ZAPORIZHZHIA, Ukraine/KYIV, Aug 29 (Reuters) - Ukraine announced on Monday the start of a long-awaited counter-offensive to retake territory in the south seized by Russian forces since their invasion six months ago, a move reflecting Kyiv's growing confidence as Western military aid flows in.

"Today we started offensive actions in various directions, including in the Kherson region," Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne cited southern command spokeswoman Natalia Humeniuk as saying.

Russia rapidly captured swathes of Ukraine’s south near the Black Sea coast, including the city of Kherson, in the early phase of the war in stark contrast to its failed attempt to capture the capital Kyiv.

Ukraine has been using sophisticated Western-supplied weapons to hit Russian ammunition dumps and wreak havoc with supply lines. Humeniuk told a briefing on Monday that Ukraine had struck more than 10 such ammunition dumps in the past week, adding they had "unquestionably weakened the enemy".

Ukrainian counter offensives proving to come at a high price for little payoff.

Neutral telegram channels have documented proof of extensive manpower and equipment losses. Almost entire brigades lost.

Both sides pack such a punch that offense will always come at a high price and a protracted stalemate seems logical eventually

And who is Russia bombing?
Do you even know what is the estimated death toll in Mariupol?

Russia fighting bombing with more bombing and death?? That making any sense?

Russian supporter + living in Ukraine = Ukrainian insurgent.

If you took the time to actually understand what you are arguing, you would be a more successful internet contrarian.
