Three to be Charged as Gang Leaders as Police Bust Human Trafficking/Child Prostitution Ring

Three persons are expected to be charged with being a gang leader after police arrested five suspects allegedly involved in a human trafficking and child prostitution ring last Saturday.

The five are also expected to be charged with other serious offences such as supporting a gang, trafficking in children, inciting a child to become a prostitute, arranging and facilitating the prostitution of a child and sexual penetration of a child.

Two foreign nationals, and a police officer were among five suspects arrested by the Northern Division-North, Arima Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Saturday 4th June, 2022, after they conducted diligent and pain-staking enquiries. The enquiries were conducted following the discoveries made during a search warrant exercise at a premises located at John Shaw Avenue, Eastern Main Road, Arima on Friday 15th April, 2022. While there, police found and rescued several foreign nationals, including minors. Sex paraphernalia, a quantity of condoms, a large amount of alcohol, a quantity of cash and a roulette machine were among the other items found and seized for evidential purposes from the unlicensed premises.

The evidence led officers to conduct further enquires, which resulted in the arrest of the five suspects on Saturday, and the seizure of one kilogram of marijuana, a large quantity of cash and other items.

Acting Commissioner of Police, Mc Donald Jacob commented that this successful operation is a direct result of strategic decision by his executive to divide the Northern Division, which is the largest Police Division into North and North-Central. He said the split was done to bring about more effective crime management and greater operational and administrative efficiency which would ultimately lead to reduced crime and safer communities.

The Acting Commissioner said with this operation, significant inroads have been made into the scourge of human trafficking and the exploitation of women and children, who are seen as vulnerable and easy targets by unscrupulous gangs. He said the TTPS will continue to relentlessly pursue these depraved and heartless criminals who have no regard for humanity, the innocence of children and the sanctity of life. He also thanked the officers involved and the external agencies, including Immigration Division and Counter Trafficking Unit.

The investigation was spearheaded by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ramnarine Samaroo and co-ordinated by Snr Supt, Christopher Paponette, Supt Edwards and Insp Pitt, under the legal directions and advice of Attorney at Law/TTPS Legal Officer, Zaheer Ali. Ag/Cpl Persad of the Northern Division Criminal Investigations Division (C.I.D.) conducted the exercise with the assistance of other officers from the Northern Division, Multi-Operational Police Section (M.O.P.S) and Ag/Cpl Antoine and other officers of the Special Task Force. The Immigration Division-Enforcement Unit and the Counter Trafficking Unit also assisted in the operation.

Investigations are continuing.

Transnational Drug Trade Takes a Hit as Over $500K worth of Cocaine Seized in Tobago

Three men who reside in Trinidad are expected to appear at the Tobago Magistrates’ Court today, after they were charged with various drug related offences on June 9th 2022.

These arrests underscore the unrelenting work of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) as it seeks to dismantle the transnational organised crime networks which are involved in the trafficking of cocaine to North America, Europe and other parts of the world.

JADEN THOMPSON, 22, a fabricator who resides in Cunupia, JOSIAH SEEPERSADSINGH, 18, a warehouse attendant from Valsayn and UGOCHUKWU EZENAGU, 29, a warehouse attendant, and national of Nigeria, who also resides in Valsayn, were charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Thompson was also charged with an additional count of trafficking in cocaine arising out of another incident which occurred in May 2022.

Around 1:15 pm on 7th June, officers of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Tobago were at the TTPOST Scarborough branch carrying out routine checks on packages. Whilst there, the officers met a man who allegedly produced two cardboard boxes containing a quantity of clothing, hair products and cosmetics. The officers then conducted a search of both boxes in his presence and upon further examination they allegedly found concealed within the lining of the said boxes, six packages each containing quantities of cocaine. The man was arrested and taken to the Crown Point Police Station. The officers continued enquiries and then proceeded to a carpark in Scarborough where two other men were arrested in connection with the investigation.

In this incident, the cocaine seized weighed 547 grammes, with an estimated street value of $218,800.

In a previous incident on 12th May, 2022, a man went to TTPOST, Wilson Road, Scarborough, Tobago, where he allegedly posted a box containing a wedding dress along with other items to an address in Australia. On 18th May 2022, officers of the SIU went to a shipping company at El Socorro where they examined a box that was shipped from TTPOST Scarborough and destined for Australia. The officers allegedly found concealed within the lining of the cardboard box four packages each containing cocaine. Officers conducted enquiries, interviewed several persons, received certain information and on June 9th 2022, proceeded to Tobago where they formally charged Thompson with trafficking in cocaine.

In this incident, the cocaine seized weighed 778 grammes, with an estimated street value of $311,200.

Investigations are ongoing.

A TWO-WAY battle is now on between radio personality Randy Anim Mansoor, also known as Mr. Smooth, and his wife Alana Mansoor as they both filed to obtain court protection orders against each other.

The two appeared today before Magistrate Sarah De Silva in Sangre Grande Magistrate's Court, with each of them claiming they had been abused by the other.
