Herbal alternatives to antidepressants.

Postby Rockram » July 1st, 2021, 11:20 am

Recently tried "Ashwaghada" an ancient chineese/ Indian herbal supplement which I must say is very effective, has anyone tried any others with success, BTW staying away from THC/CBD which ARE effective but MAKE ME less functional/sleepy....

For real depression there's a lot of research showing this works.

As for ashwaganda it does help me sleep and wake up feeling very energised, similar to ZMA.

But also OP the best anti depressant is exercise, especially running.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion I do exercise alot, including running I also cycle most days of the week which does help to a point...Doing some research on "Kava kava" looks promising not sure if it's available in Trinidad.

OP, putting pills and potions aside for a moment just answer something for me

-How active are you?
-What's does your daily diet look like?

Everything else is mental and much harder to solve (but possible)

(BTW, try taking some magnesium suppliments)

Consider myself to have a moderate active lifestyle, job is a sedentary one, but I typically cycle between 350 and 500kms a week, also walk run, and light weight training, used various supplements, cognitive behavior therapy etc...have tried most things aside from herbal medication, I'm a vegetarian over 30years and I've switched to full vegan since the onset of the pandemic, I take all supplements including omega 3 6 9 which is taught to be linked to mental health, I also obsessively consume foods high in antioxidants/flavanoids green tea, dark chocolate, hibiscus flower tea etc....so yeah I look after myself.

Only problem I seeing there is the vegetarian/vegan diet there tbh

I tried it for 3 years and was HELLA depressed.
Now eat lots more red meat/eggs with fresh baked breads (ie, ones that spoil) and my moods/energy levels have never been higher.

So idk if you'd want to go that route.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALSO, since you're vege, you may be feeding yourself more carbs than protein so your gut bacteria may be out of whack. The majority of seratonin comes from your gut. So Include some whole cream yogurts/kombucha/kefir

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Also Im a person who excessivly consumed "feel good superfoods" like chocolate/teas to help feel better, didn't work.
But only because tea/chocolate has excess stimulants which affect sleep patterns and ting. So try laying off that for a lil bit. Dosage makes the poison, even water can be toxic.

_-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALSO ALSO ALSO, try to do more weight training than cardio. Deadlifting heavy spikes testosterone, which helps with mood regulation.
Cardio helps, but not when you over dweet. Balance my bredda.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Try the magnesium suppliments tho, not just a multivitamin that contains is.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your mindset is another factor, but dais another post.

Thanks very much for this view, some really good info, I definitely would move from cardio to weight training...Diet can be tweaked but i do limit carbs and get protein from veg sources....My energy levels has always been very high, also no depression...When I initially became a vegetarian and limited carbs I was miserable like you described until I supplemented my diet with healthy fats.

On the topic of healthy fats

Don't use any oil/fat that came from a seed. (Ie soybean, canola, etc)
and esp dont use margarine

Butter/ghee are perfect
But if you're vegan, olive oil and coconut oil works hella good too

(just make sure its actual olive oil, pricemart one in the glass bottle seems to be legit, they have sources listed)
As for coconut oil, the best is virgin pressed homemade . Im wary of the flavorless ones in the plastic bottles.

Probably because you either using the wrong type of herb, in the wrong amounts, or the wrong way, or a combination of all 3. As the man said, the dosage is the poison. Low dose tinctures work extremely well from what I have been told.
Another thing, bad sleep patterns and a diet lacking in key nutrients can wreak havoc on your body and mind. One trick to improve sleep, do your exercises in the evenings, and turn off all screens an hour before you go to bed.

Hope you gt

An old co worker of mine recommended a magnesium supplement when she learnt of my poor sleeping/eating patterns etc. I never took it on tbh and then one day she shows up with a bottle and a threat.

I took it, but never continued so I really can't speak to the effects. Seeing ruffneck repeat the point of taking a magnesium supplement on its own it reminded me of that time.

LOOOL, if she threatening you to take vitamins, she prolly wanted her soul collected by you, dai all I go say

But yeah dawg, Magnesium gives you a very subtle boost in stress tolerance. Your brain actually tries to wonder how you got so good at handling stress. Situations that used to fold you, now get so much more manageable and you can tackle tasks with ease.

Large doses can cause upset stomach, diarrhea, and vomiting. Risks. Talk to a doctor before using ashwagandha if you have any health conditions, including cancer, diabetes, thyroid problems, bleeding disorders, ulcers, lupus, multiple sclerosis, or rheumatoid arthritis.

Correct.Different terpenes have different effects, therefore different strains will have different effects.
If you need sleep, I would recommend lavender tea, or melatonin pills.
For cannabis, Amnesia Haze or Dos-si- dos

Chocolate is an antidepressant.
You'll get fat, so better sweat it out. Exercise also releases dopamine, so just eat chocolate and train like a beast and you'll be happy like a pig in mid

Not just that eh mero.
Plenty people does smoke weed in the hopes that it will help them sleep, relieve anxiety or depression, or remedy other health issues. Truth be told, smoking is the least efficient way to use it for medical purposes. The more effective method is tinctures, in small doses, not taking enough to get high, just using enough to get by.
